Leonard Michael Maltin (born December 18, 1950) is an American film critic and historian, author of several mainstream books on cinema, focusing on nostalgic, celebratory narratives. He is known as a "go-to" critic for the major studios, for writing the shortest review in the U.S. and creating the Walt Disney Treasures series.
Maltin was born in New York City, son of singer Jacqueline (née Gould; 1923–2012), and Aaron Isaac Maltin (1915–2002), a lawyer and immigration judge. He is married to researcher and producer Alice Tlusty. He has one daughter, Jessica Bennett ("Jessie") Maltin, born in 1986, who works with him (his production company, JessieFilm, is named after his daughter). Maltin is Jewish. Maltin grew up in Teaneck, New Jersey, and graduated from Teaneck High School. He described his relationship with fellow film critic Roger Ebert as friendly but not close.
Maltin began his writing career at age fifteen, writing for Classic Images and editing and publishing his own fanzine, Film Fan Monthly, dedicated to films from the golden age of Hollywood. After earning a journalism degree at New York University, Maltin went on to publish articles in a variety of film journals, newspapers, and magazines, including Variety and TV Guide. In the 1970s Maltin also reviewed recordings in the jazz magazine, Downbeat.
George Walton Lucas, Jr. (born May 14, 1944) is an American filmmaker and entrepreneur. He is best known as the creator of the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, as well as the founder of Lucasfilm and Industrial Light & Magic. He led Lucasfilm as chairman and chief executive before selling it to The Walt Disney Company in 2012.
Upon graduating from the University of Southern California in 1967, Lucas co-founded American Zoetrope with fellow filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola. He wrote and directed THX 1138 (1971), based on his earlier student short Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB, which was a critical success but a financial failure. Lucas's next work as a writer-director was the film American Graffiti (1973), inspired by his teen years in early 1960s Modesto, California, and produced through the newly founded Lucasfilm. The film was critically and commercially successful, and received five Academy Award nominations including Best Picture.
Lucas's next film, an epic space opera then titled Star Wars (1977), went through a troubled production process, but was a surprise hit, becoming the highest-grossing film at the time as well as a winner of six Academy Awards and a cultural phenomenon. Following the first Star Wars film, Lucas only produced and co-wrote the following installments in the trilogy, The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983). Along with Steven Spielberg, he co-created and wrote the Indiana Jones films Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Temple of Doom (1984), and The Last Crusade (1989). Lucas also produced a variety of films through Lucasfilm in the 1980s and 1990s.

I simply had to get something off my chest about a recent moviegoing experience
In part one of film critic Leonard Maltin's interview with George Lucas, the Star Wars creator discusses writing, casting, and shooting his sci-fi epic. Lucas sums up his Star Wars experience as "unpredictable" -- the making of the films, the story, the success. The original impetus for Star Wars, says Lucas, were the Flash Gordon serials he watched as a boy. Inspired, he wrote his own space opera, which was turned down by every major studio until Alan Ladd, Jr., at Twentieth Century Fox said yes. Asked about developing the script, Lucas says that his original draft was "way too big to make into a movie." He took the first part, expanded it, developed it, and focused on that. Everything else went on the shelf until a later date. Additionally, he developed backstories for Darth Vader an...

In the second installment of Leonard Maltin's interview with Star Wars creator George Lucas, the two discuss the critically acclaimed Star Wars sequel, The Empire Strikes Back. Maltin calls The Empire Strikes Back "a totally successful film in its own right, as well as one of the most popular sequels ever made." After the release of Star Wars, a success beyond Lucas' expectations, Lucas was ready to continue his story. Originally, his script for Star Wars was massive, and he cut it into segments; The Empire Strikes Back was just the next phase of a story he'd already plotted. Maltin asks about the biggest overall difference between Episode IV and Episode V, noting that the latter is considered a darker picture. "It is a darker film," Lucas says, "because in the first act you introduce ...
In part three of film critic Leonard Maltin's interview with Star Wars creator George Lucas, the two discuss the final film of the original trilogy, Return of the Jedi. Lucas says that Return of the Jedi mostly matched his original vision, except that Ewoks replaced Wookiees. He wanted a primitive species to battle the Empire, and he'd already established Chewbacca as being mechanically sophisticated in A New Hope, which disqualified Wookiees. This led to the creation of the Rebels' new "furry companions." (In fact, the name Ewok is derived from Wookiee.) Jabba the Hutt was originally meant to be in the first film, but time prevented his inclusion. Lucas wanted a "big, repulsive character," and he finally made his debut in Return of the Jedi. When asked about the film's environments,...

Another Entertainment Tonight segment from 1989... This one focuses on the booming business of movie merchandising. Batman is of course mentioned (albeit briefly). And sorry Leonard- Even though I LOVED Dick Tracy, it didn't come close to the Batmania of '89. *Credit to "Ghosthead" Alex Newborn (AKA youtube user LexTheRobot) for this great clip!
