Anchorage (officially called the Municipality of Anchorage) is a unified home rule municipality in the U.S. State of Alaska. With an estimated 300,950 residents in 2013, it is Alaska's most populous city and contains more than 40 percent of the state's total population; among the 50 states, only New York has a higher percentage of residents who live in its most populous city. All together, the Anchorage metropolitan area, which combines Anchorage with the neighboring Matanuska-Susitna Borough, had a population of 396,142 in 2013.
Anchorage is located in the South-central portion of Alaska at the terminus of the Cook Inlet on a peninsula formed by the Knik Arm to the north and the Turnagain Arm to the south. The city limits span 1,961.1 square miles (5,079.2 km2) which encompass the urban core, a joint Military base, several outlying communities and almost all of Chugach State Park.
Anchorage’s location on the globe puts it within 9 1⁄2 hours by air to nearly 90% of the industrialized world. For this reason Anchorage is a common refueling stop for many international passenger flights and is home to a major FedEx Hub which the company calls a "critical part" of its global network of services.

Ride along with the Anchorage Fire Department to see the impact the synthetic drug Spice has on Alaska’s largest city. On Nov. 17 and Dec. 1, multimedia journalist Scott Jensen rode with Anchorage Fire Department emergency medical services battalion chief Michael Crotty to get a first-hand look at the city’s Spice problem. Since mid-July, the department has reported a major increase in suspected Spice-related emergencies. In October, nearly one-fifth of all transports were thought to be Spice-related, draining resources from other emergency calls. “There (are) lots of times that we will not have enough resources to go to a lot of different calls because we have so many tied up on the Spice users,” fire department dispatcher Andrea Hutzel said. Altogether since January, there have been nine unsolved homicides on trails, in parks, or along desolate streets. Three of the cases were double homicides. The two victims were found in close proximity. At a town hall-style meeting organized by the mayor Thursday, officials said they couldn't confirm whether a serial killer was responsible for the killings. Longtime Anchorage residents are well acquainted with Blue Central, the midtown bar and restaurant that closed in 2013. It’s been resurrected at Williwaw (both in name and in a liquor license transfer) but with a far different look. Forget the well-worn booths and neon lighting. Blue Central has gone back to the Prohibition era, with a modern twist. Pictures of rock 'n' roll icons line the bar, lit by vintage-style Edison light bulbs. The cocktails include pop culture-inspired mixes alongside Prohibition-era favorites. Even getting in to the bar is an event -- requiring a phone booth, password and an unmarked door. Alaska is one of the most dangerous states in the nation many people in Alaska do not carry insurance and for them. According to the AP, alaska has some of the highest health care costs in the nation and but the Affordable Care Act just isn't working for the states residents. Nearly a quarter of Alaska's 740,000 residents are covered by Medicaid, which Gov. Bill Walker expanded under the ACA. Only about 19,000 Alaskans get insurance on the individual market, resulting in a tiny pool across which insurers can spread costs. as costs mount, many of those who gained coverage under the law or have affordable plans are fearful about losing their lifeline. http://hosted2.ap.org/APDEFAULT/386c25518f464186bf7a2ac026580ce7/Article_2017-04-15-US--Health%20Overhaul-Alaska/id-e564a48aba2a4490a66409cb4e...

The attractions of Juneau, State Capital of Alaska. Juneau is a fascinating small city with lots to offer the visitors, as I found out during my stay there.
Anchorage, Alaska is a GREAT city for tourists but even though I wouldn't suggest spending too much time downtown, it is the perfect place to plan your adventures. Most people might tell you to book your day trips in advance but sometimes the weather here may limit what you'll experience from them. So by doing a little research before you come, then tracking the weather and learning more about Alaska downtown, you're pretty much guaranteed to get more from your stay. The best months to come are between May and September but June and July being the best. I'm not working for Alaska or any tourist company by the way. This is just from my personal experience.
