Since their institution, the Mercantour and Alpi Marittime parks undertook several initiatives to protect the natural heritage of their wide transboundary territory. The extraordinary species and habitat richness, made it an ideal pilot site for many scientific research, conservation and management activities. With the aim of improving the knowledge of the biodiversity of the area, the two parks became the firs European pilot site for an All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory, an ambitious project promoted and organised by the European Distributed Institute of Taxonomy (EDIT) following the example of the American ATBI at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (Discover Life In America). The ATBI is a large-scale field work efforts to record, identify, and document the entire biodiversity of a given area. however, an ATBI not only compiles lists of species, but also collects information on habitat, distribution, time and date of occurrences of the observed species, as well as abundance and biology. In 2010 the ATBI became a part of the Transboundary Action Plan (PIT) Marittime Mercantour funded by the Transboundary Cooperation Programme Italy -- France Alcotra 2007 -- 2013, and continued its activities also thanks to the contribution of the Principality of Monaco and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. Among the many researches carried out within the ATBI, Dr. Kees van Achterberg, entomologist at the Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum, Leiden, The Netherlands, studied the Hymenoptera insects (such as wasps) of the Alpi Marittime Natural Park.
