SILK

SILK is an audio compression format and audio codec developed by Skype Limited. It was developed for use in Skype, as a replacement for the SVOPC codec. Since licensing out, it has also been used by others. It has been extended to the Internet standard Opus codec.

Details

Skype Limited announced that SILK can use a sampling frequency of 8, 12, 16 or 24 kHz and a bit rate from 6 to 40 kbit/s. It can also use a low algorithmic delay of 25 ms (20 ms frame size + 5 ms look-ahead). The reference implementation is written in the C programming language. The codec technology is based on linear predictive coding (LPC). The SILK binary SDK is available.

License

The SILK codec is patented and licensed separately from the SILK SDK. The codec is open-source, freeware, available royalty free with restrictions on use and distribution. The SDK was initially available only by application by giving details of name, address, phone, and description of how SILK will be used.As of 2012 (version 1.0.9) the SDK can by downloaded without application, but the licence restricts the use to internal evaluation and testing purposes only, excluding software distribution or use in any commercial product or service.

Stephen Thomas Erlewine at Allmusic called the groups vocals on the album "impressive." Erlewine also gave note to the production, which he referred to as "seamless without being overly slick." The ballad "How Could You Say You Love Me," and third single "Don't Rush" were praised by Upscale magazine.

Silk (novel)

Silk (Italian: Seta) is a 1996 novel by the Italian writer Alessandro Baricco. It was translated into English in 1997 by Guido Waldman. A new English translation by Ann Goldstein was published in 2006.

Plot

The novel tells the story of a French silkworm merchant-turned-smuggler named Hervé Joncour in 19th century France who travels to Japan for his town's supply of silkworms after a disease wipes out their African supply. His first trip to Japan takes place in the Bakumatsu period, when Japan was still largely closed to foreigners. During his stay in Japan, he becomes obsessed with the concubine of a local baron. His trade in Japan and his personal relationship with the concubine are both strained by the internal political turmoil and growing anti-Western sentiment in Japan that followed the arrival of Matthew C. Perry in Edo Bay.

Freak (Estelle song)

"Freak" is a single by English musician Estelle. The song, which features Canadian rapper Kardinal Offishall, was produced by French DJ David Guetta. It contains an interpolation of "Back to Life" by music group Soul II Soul in the chorus. "Freak" was featured on the soundtrack to Step Up 3D and the reissue of David Guetta's album One Love, entitled One More Love.

The single was released in North America on February 26, 2010 and was released in the UK on May 3, 2010 as a buzz single after the song failed to chart in the Top 100. The song was released as her third international single, after "American Boy" and "Come Over" and received positive reaction from most music critics. The song was used as one of the songs of the São Paulo Fashion Week 2010, during the parade of Colcci and in the movie Step Up 3D in 2010. "Freak" was due to be released as the first single from her third studio album All of Me but was instead included as a US bonus track.

Reception

Freak (play)

Freak was a one-man show, written and performed by actor/comedian John Leguizamo. The play debuted at Cort Theater on Broadway in 1998 and won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding One-Person Show.

There is no linear plot to the play, but over the course of the performance, Leguizamo traces his life from the very beginning (as a sperm cell) to the beginning of his career in show business. During the course of the play, Leguizamo portrays dozens of different characters, including friends, relatives and neighbors that he knew while growing up in Queens, New York. Leguizamo plays characters of both genders and of many different ethnicities, sometimes engaging in multi-character dialogues all by himself.

The show garnered Leguizamo and members of the production crew with several awards and nominations.

A filmed performance was directed by Spike Lee aired on HBO under the same name. Leguizamo followed this performance up with the Broadway show Sexaholix: A Love Story in 2001 which also aired on HBO.

Freak (online drama)

Freak is a television teen drama format created and produced by production company FMX (part of the FremantleMedia group). The series, which was described as an "edgy, teenage coming-of-age story", featured a cast of fresh, young actors and invited the audience to be part of the creative process by choosing the music, becoming a member of the cast and helping to shape the storyline. The first series was sponsored by Red Bull and Procter & Gamble and was launched on July 20, 2009.

The format was created by Josie Ward.

Synopsis

FREAK follows Lucy, an online gaming addict who dresses clothes she steals from her reluctant step-bro Ant (Sean Bourke) until she begins to realise that her gaming obsession has started to turn her into a boy! Lucy's online mates offer advice on how to become the perfect girl and as Lucy starts to discover who she really is, she finds herself getting attention from indie kid Steve (Jamie Di Spirito) and geeky Dennis (Daniel Ormerod), receiving bad advice from Dennis' cruel fashionista sister Heather (Abi Hardingham) and stepping on the toes of Steve‟s girlfriend Kelly (Aisling Jarret). But does she even like the girl they created? Will the real Lucy please stand up?!
