BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1982

“Mirror Man” is a 1982 song by the British synthpop group The Human League. It was released as a single in the UK on 8 November 1982 and peaked at number two in the UK Singles Chart. It was written jointly by lead singer Philip Oakey with keyboard players Jo Callis and Ian Burden, and produced by Martin Rushent.

“Mirror Man” was the first track written and recorded by the Human League after they returned from their World Tour, conducted in the wake of the enormous international success of their album Dare. “Mirror Man” was conceived and written as a celebration of Oakey and Wright’s love of Motown records. It has been described as electronic northern soul, with Oakey’s main verses delivered in deliberate sentences with emphasis on the last word of each sentence. Vocalists Susan Ann Sulley and Joanne Catherall feature prominently throughout the song but have no lyrics, providing backing vocals of “oohs” and “ahhs”. Recording and production was overseen by Martin Rushent, who had produced the band’s album Dare.

Speculation about who was the titular ‘Mirror Man’ was ended in 1988 when, during interviews to promote the band’s Greatest Hits album, Oakey revealed that it was about Adam Ant. Oakey had become concerned that Ant was starting to believe his own publicity, and was in danger of losing touch with reality. Oakey had avoided revealing this at the time for fear of offending the song’s subject. The song could be viewed as a reference to the 1971 Japanese TV series Mirrorman.

The song was released as a single in the UK in November 1982. It was the first new single the band had released since the phenomenal success of “Don’t You Want Me” almost a year earlier. The single was tipped by the media as their second Christmas number-one single in the UK, but peaked just short, at number two. The single did however reach number one in Ireland earlier that month and also reached the Top 10 in Canada the following February.

Its release in the U.S. was delayed until May 1983 where it was incorporated into the stop gap EP Fascination!. A&M Records, the band’s record company in the US, had refused to release it as a single “unless there was to be an album hot on its heels”. The track peaked at number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the fall of 1983.

I have so many great memories dancing to this track back in ’88. I thought it was so cool that Olivia was getting heavy club play I love hearing it beat mixed in with all the other club hits of the day.

“The Rumour” was the first single released from Olivia Newton-John’s 1988 MCA Records album of the same name. “The Rumour” was produced by Elton John and James Newton Howard, and was written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin. The song also included backing vocals and piano by Elton John. The single only reached #62 on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

“The Rumour” was issued as a 12″ single featuring remixes by Shep Pettibone helping it become a top twenty dance hit peaking at #17 on the Billboard Dance Chart in October 1988. “The Rumour” also charted in Australia #35, Germany #36 and UK #86.

“A Girl in Trouble (Is a Temporary Thing)” was a hit single for American new wave/post punk band Romeo Void in 1984, from the Columbia album Instincts. It was the band’s biggest hit and only Top 40 single, peaking at number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Hi, everyone

This weekend is Memorial Day weekend here in the USA a national holiday for remembering the people who died while serving in the country’s armed forces. The holiday also marks the start of the unofficial summer vacation season and many Americans take to lakes and camping grounds for the long holiday weekend. I will be leaving myself later this afternoon for a short holiday just to get away and reset.
I think after the tough week that we all had we should take a deep breath and remember that we are all in this crazy world together. I especially want to send a big hug to all that are hurting in Manchester and around the globe.

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1987

“Victim of Love” is a song by British synthpop duo Erasure, released in May 1987 as their sixth single overall.

It was the third single to be lifted from the duo’s second album, The Circus, released six weeks earlier, and was remixed for single release.

The song was written by band members Vince Clarke and Andy Bell and incorporates the signature Erasure sound of uptempo rhythm, analog synthesizer and a prominent acoustic guitar. Bell’s lyrics pertain to one’s apprehension when entering into a new love relationship. The song’s protagonist doesn’t “want to look like some kind of fool” or become a “victim of love”.

Upon its release, “Victim of Love” became the second UK Top 10 single for Erasure, peaking at number seven. “Victim of Love” also hit number one on the U.S. Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart (Clarke and Bell would have to wait eighteen years before their second U.S. Dance chart-topper “Breathe”).

The song remains one of Erasure’s signature tunes and is a concert favorite.
