Sci-Fi Retrospective

In 2017, MIFF boldly goes where no MIFF has gone before, presenting a massive Sci-Fi Retrospective featuring many of the genre’s most groundbreaking, influential and important films alongside some of its most inventive and entertaining. Significantly, many of these films are also hard-to-find, visually breathtaking spectacles that are best seen in the cinema. We’re thrilled to be showing these works, and equally thrilled to reveal the first titles in the program, along with two special events on sale now:

MIFF is hiring

Casual positions are now available for Box Office staff, and Front of House (FOH) Managers and Ushers for the 2017 Melbourne International Film Festival, taking place between 3-20 August 2017. Details at miff.com.au/jobs.

Michel Chion at MIFF 2017

Presented by Liquid Architecture, MIFF and ACMI, French composer, filmmaker, historian and writer Michel Chion visits Australia for the first time for two MIFF special events, August 16 & 17.  

The Audio-Spectator: an epic concert for ten surround-speakers featuring his most famous piece Requiem (1973), alongside two new audiovisual compositions. Tickets are still available!

The Voice in Cinema: a performative lecture tracing a history of the ‘acousmêtre’ – Chion’s term for the mysterious off-screen voice in cinema. [Tickets are on standby for this event].

Cinephiles and music cognoscenti, these unique presentations are not to be missed!

MIFF x MSO: There Will be Blood

Jonny Greenwood’s There Will Be Blood score is widely regarded as one of the most influential soundtracks in recent years. In this special MIFF presentation in association with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the MSO will perform the score while Paul Thomas Anderson’s Academy Award® winning film plays on the big screen, on Saturday 5 August. Tickets on sale now.

MIFF Schools

Previously called Next Gen, the brand new MIFF Schools program has launched, with bookings for school groups now open. MIFF Schools is a Melbourne International Film Festival initiative to enrich the cinema experience for younger viewers, with the films carefully selected to be not only high quality, diverse and age appropriate, but also in languages most commonly taught in Victorian schools: French, German, Greek, Indonesian, Japanese, Mandarin and Spanish. Wendall Thomas Talks Scripts

Presented by MIFF 37ºSouth Market & Accelerator, celebrated LA-based developer, writer and lecturer Wendall Thomas, who has written and developed projects for companies including Disney, Warner Brothers, Paramount, Universal, Showtime and NBC, returns exclusively to Melbourne for more of her popular series unlocking the secrets of film writing with a series of four all-day seminars on screenwriting. Adrian Wootton Talks Film Femmes

Presented by MIFF 37ºSouth Market & Accelerator Lab, Adrian Wootton returns exclusively to Melbourne for another series of his acclaimed Illustrated Film Talks, this year focusing on the Hollywood Golden Age and four legendary actresses, who appeared in some of the greatest films in celluloid history: Lauren Bacall, Judy Garland (pictured), Gloria Grahame and Ingrid Bergman.
