Peru (i/pəˈruː/; Spanish: Perú [peˈɾu]; Quechua: Piruw [pɪɾʊw];Aymara: Piruw [pɪɾʊw]), officially the Republic of Peru (Spanish: República del Perú ), is a country in western South America. It is bordered in the north by Ecuador and Colombia, in the east by Brazil, in the southeast by Bolivia, in the south by Chile, and in the west by the Pacific Ocean. Peru is an extremely biodiverse country with habitats ranging from the arid plains of the Pacific coastal region in the west to the peaks of the Andes mountains vertically extending from the north to the southeast of the country to the tropical Amazon Basin rainforest in the east with the Amazon river.
Peruvian territory was home to ancient cultures spanning from the Norte Chico civilization in Caral, one of the oldest in the world, to the Inca Empire, the largest state in Pre-Columbian America. The Spanish Empire conquered the region in the 16th century and established a Viceroyalty with its capital in Lima, which included most of its South American colonies. Ideas of political autonomy later spread throughout Spanish America and Peru gained its independence, which was formally proclaimed in 1821. After the battle of Ayacucho, three years after proclamation, Peru ensured its independence. After achieving independence, the country remained in recession and kept a low military profile until an economic rise based on the extraction of raw and maritime materials struck the country, which ended shortly before the war of the Pacific. Subsequently, the country has undergone changes in government from oligarchic to democratic systems. Peru has gone through periods of political unrest and internal conflict as well as periods of stability and economic upswing.

President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski said that authorities are prepared to provide shelter and relief to those left homeless. Muddy water spilled onto streets and into homes on Thursday in a new round of unusually heavy rains that has killed at least a dozen people in Peru and now threatens flooding in the capital. The intense rains and mudslides over the past three days have wrought havoc around the Andean nation and caught residents in Lima, a desert city of 10 million where it almost never rains, by surprise. In one of the more dramatic incidents, stunned residents watched and took out cellphone cameras as a woman escaped after being swept into an avalanche of mud, wood debris and farm animals about 53 kilometers (32 miles) south of downtown Lima. Evangelina Chamorro, 32, had just droppe...
In April 1990, the classic lineup of Guns N' Roses played its final show. The occasion was the nationally televised Farm Aid concert, a disastrous set that included, among several bizarre highlights, , and Axl Rose ending the live broadcast with a climactic "." It was the mark of a band breaking apart. Why did Slash sneak a mountain lion into the Four Seasons? Amazingly, though, the imploding GN'R were in the midst of an artistic surge. One of the songs played at Farm Aid (in a version hampered by Adler's inability to learn it) was "Civil War," a sweeping epic that would eventually open the second disc of the massive 30-song, two-and-a-half-hour opus they were hard at work on throughout 1990 and '91. Slash would later liken Use Your Illusion I and II to the Beatles' White Album (though...

Think of Brazil and the Olympics, Football and Carnival come to mind but samba back to the early 2000s and Brazil was the poster child for the emerging markets. Back in the late twentieth century Brazil’s economy had been anything but stable. Plagued by hyperinflation, the government at the time took desperate measures to ensure the currency stabilised. They did this by simply getting rid of it over a number of years and replacing it with one pegged to the value of the dollar. By the turn of the millennium “Plano Real” as it was called, started to pay dividends and after forty years of economic turmoil, inflation finally levelled off and the economy began to thrive. Brazil’s climate makes it an agricultural hotspot with coffee, sugar, soybean, meat and tobacco high on its list of raw expor...
Peruvian cuisine continues to win popularity worlwide. CCTV's Dan Collyns reports that food is becoming the engine of Peru's developing economy and is driving job creation in the region.
CCTV's Dan Collyns in Peru reports on the country's currency appreciation and their purchase of at least 4 billion U.S. dollars in 2013 to hold down their national currency. Peru has the fastest growing economy in South America and the government wants to keep growth at a positive rate. The country's central bankers are worried inflation can stall growth. Later, Phillip Yin is joined by Francisco Durand, University of Texas Professor, to speak on the subject.
Over the past five years, economic conditions for 7 million Peruvians have improved to the point where they are no longer considered living in poverty. This leap is historic, but not everyone is feeling the positive effects. While poverty is down in many cities dropping from 42 percent in 2001 to 16 percent in 2013. Peru has been widely hailed as an example of inclusive growth and turning economic progress into poverty reduction. CCTV America’s Dan Collyns reports.
Summary Peru has not always been associated with robust economic growth. But, thanks to demand from China for Peruvian raw materials, the mountainous South American country now has one of the region's strongest performing economies. Even when the world was in a serious economic downturn, people still wanted to buy what Peru had to sell: the products of mines, farms and an enormous fishing fleet. And, during that time, Peru's once problematic hyperinflation gave way to a stable currency and a stable government. Peru's economic future looks bright, too - a planned transoceanic highway to Brazil coupled with closer relations with the U.S. and China all point to success for many Peruvians in the coming years. But, questions still loom about whether the economic benefits will trickle dow...

Peru has continued economic growth despite a world recession. Ray Suarez previews his piece about how the country is utilizing resources and geography.
Lima, the capital of Peru, is a sprawling metropolis of about 10 million people. Known as the "city of kings", it was founded by the Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century and became an important centre of the Spanish empire in South America. Over generations, people from around the world have settled in the vibrant city, resulting in a mix of cultures and cuisines. Previously Lima was not much more than a transit point for tourists going to the ancient city of Cusco and the magnificent ruins of Machu Picchu. But the tourism industry has grown and tourists are spending more time and money in Lima's restaurants. Peru's economy may be booming and the status of the nation's cuisine on the rise, but poverty is still rife. Gloria Villanueva Reyes is one of thousands of women working in P...

Date: Wednesday, April 24th, 2013 Time: 4:00 pm to 6:00pm Location: Given E131, UVM We hear a lot in the news today about waiting for growth to occur in the economy. Meanwhile, all of us are increasingly concerned about job security and availability, government spending and taxation, as well as, rates of savings and investment. As we all wait patiently for economic growth, we must think critically about our current systems, focusing on what works and what should be reconfigured. In thinking critically, we must ask ourselves, "Is economic growth good for people and the environment?" The Financing the New Economy track will kick off with a debate between neoclassical and ecological economic schools of thought. The neoclassical team, Professors Arthur Woolf and Bill Gibson, will debate the...

De Soto’s organization, the Institute for Liberty and Democracy (ILD), sends scores of researchers out into the slums and rural areas of developing world to gather data. They have found that, though the vast majority of citizens in most developing nations live outside the official, well-connected economic system, they all still have very specific rules to govern their interactions. The ILD’s goal: to help developing nations give the poor access to the business and property institutions that will allow them to participate in the broader economy. De Soto has documented that in the world of the poor, it takes months or years to get an official title to a home, write legal contracts, or legally open a business. It takes hundreds of steps to set up a corporation. There is no credit. The poor can’t prove that the house they live in, their largest asset, is even theirs. Since they can’t get into the formal economy, they have set up their own, informal economy. It exists outside the formal written system, but has its own specific rules and processes. It's no secret that we live in a globalized world. Pick up any item in your home and it could come from any number of countries ranging from China to Portugal to Peru. Open up your computer and you can see news from The Netherlands or easily call a friend who lives in Japan. Given that the world is so connected now, it's no surprise that the world economy has followed suit. Nowadays, countries rely on each other for trade at unprecedented levels, which has led to economic growth for many nations, but also increases the risk that if economic problems arise in one country they can rapidly spread. An economic event in one corner of the world can have a large impact on countries on the other side. If the European Union is having difficulty supporting all of its member countries and begins i...

This initiative is empowering young Peruvian women to grow their own business, and also lessen impacts on the Inca Trail – helping to grow a green economy and preserve this treasured destination. All of their products must receive sanitary registration by the government of Peru in order to to be sold to the tourism industry on a wide scale – capital they needed in order to be able to grow. http://www.planeterra.org/
This week our host Mauricio Izquierdo takes us to Peru, where Chinese culture thrives among indigenous customs. Chinese immigrants have been able to retain many of their ancient traditions while fully integrating themselves into Peruvian culture. Approximately five million people with Chinese last names now live in Peru. Then it’s off to the Andes where we hear the sounds of ancient sikuri music now being kept alive by a group of artists that practice indigenous ways of life. Although the Spanish conquerors tried to wipe out all traces of indigenous music, it is alive and well today. teleSUR http://multimedia.telesurtv.net/v/cultura-latina-463146/

Peru has long faced a disparity in the quality of healthcare services provided by well-equipped urban clinics versus those in more rural areas. Healthcare worker Senaida Mariñas is responsible for the health post in Flor de Primavera, a remote community in the hills of Peru's San Martin region. Her dedication to her community, together with a performance improvement methodology developed by USAID's Quality Healthcare Program, has made Flor de Primavera a shining example of how quality service can lead to both increased demand for healthcare and better health outcomes.
As part of his continuing series on Peru, Ray Suarez reports on how government strategies to reduce deaths from childbirth among indigenous women who live far from health services could also help women in other Latin American countries.

Spanish/Nat Peruvian authorities are cracking down on illegal pig farms, which they say are becoming dangerous to human health. The farms - most of which are located around rubbish dumps - provide a large percentage of the meat sold in markets. Illegal pig farms like this one in Puerto del Callao are commonplace in Peru. Officials say hundreds of pigs are raised here in unhealthy conditions and then slaughtered. They are then taken to the market where each day their meat is sold to thousands of consumers. Most pig farms are located in small shanty-towns surrounded by large rubbish dumps. This one in Puerto del Callao, 20 kilometres west of Lima, is hidden in the mountains. But health officials manage to find it anyway. They say the farms are becoming ha...

Despite the United Nations confirming in 2013 that Peru has overtaken Colombia as the world's top coca and cocaine producer, the country’s place atop the drug supply chain has — at least so far — not included the levels of violence seen in Colombia, Mexico, and other international narcotics hubs. The frontlines of Peru’s war on cocaine are restricted to remote coca-producing basins, where drug laboratories and illegal landing strips are abundant. But the government’s campaign of crop eradication and efforts to destroy narco runways risk further igniting a larger social conflict, alienating the coca farmers whose livelihoods depend on growing the illicit crop. VICE News traveled to the heart of Peru’s coca-producing region to witness how the government is waging a war on drugs with the ai...

Countries around the globe are still grappling with the aftermath of Escobar's reign 20 years after his death, from the hired killers he trained as his army of underage hitmen to the remote cocaine labs and clandestine air strips in the jungles of Peru helping feed the world's hunger for coke. In part one of our three-part documentary, we meet two DEA agents who spent years on the trail of the elusive king of cocaine and became the basis for Netflix's show, Narcos. Spanish/Nat Peruvian authorities have burned more than six-thousand kilogrammes of drugs in their first drug-burning operation this year. The drugs, including marijuana, cocaine and opium, had an estimated value of 174 (m) million dollars. The government claims that with the success of its anti-drug operation, Peru is no longer the number one producer of coca leaves. It was the first massive drug-burning of the year in Peru. Plastic bags full of marijuana, cocaine, opium and other drugs represent what the Peruvian government claim is its success in the war against drugs. These bags contain more than six-thousand kilogrammes of drugs, confiscated in the latest drug raids throughout the country. Thanks to these anti-drugs operations, Peru claims it is no longer the world...
Is Peru’s New Anti-drugs Policy Too Tough Even for Washington? Could the United States defund counter-narcotics efforts in Peru, the world’s top producer of cocaine? That’s the question after Peru’s single chamber congress voted unanimously 89-0 this week to resume shooting down the small aircraft suspected of ferrying up to 150 tonnes of the drug, roughly half of national production, out of the Andean country every year. President Ollanta Humala, a former army officer who prides himself on his no-nonsense approach to drug traffickers, is expected to sign the measure into law. Although Washington has long used a carrot-and-stick approach to pressure Peru and the two other cocaine-producing nations, Colombia and Bolivia, to interdict more of the illegal export, it has also opposed a shoot ...

Authorities in Peru have arrested 15 people for drug trafficking and seized 330 kilograms (728 lbs) of cocaine, as part of a joint operation with the US Drugs Enforcement Agency. The detainees and drugs were flown into Callao, the city adjacent to the capital Lima where the airport is located, on Monday. Eight foreigners were among those detained in the operation, which took place in Piura, around 980 kilometres (609 miles) north up the coast from Lima. Peru's National Organised Crime Prosecutor, Jorge Chavez Cotrina, confirmed that two of those detained were Mexican, along with four Colombians, an Argentinian and an Israeli. He said nearly four tonnes of unprocessed liquid drugs had also been seized in the operation. The seizures were made on Saturday, according to local media. The...

Watch the rest here: http://bit.ly/Frog-Tripping-2 http://bit.ly/Frog-Tripping-3 There is an Amazonian frog called Phyllomedusa Bicolor or the Sapo which I have been reading about for years. It is totally different from the psychedelic toads found in North America. The Sapo's venom produces an effect much closer to morphine than LSD, but really it's not like either of those things. It's a distinctly vomitous dissociative experience unlike anything else I've ever encountered. There has been a lot written about the chemistry of the venom, and it has been said to have a diverse array of effects. Some people think it's a miracle opioid which will yield new non-addictive painkillers. Others think it's a super-potent s...
Nepal’s Gurung people live mostly in small villages in the vast Annapurna mountain ranges. In this remote region, they practice an ancient tradition of honey hunting where they descend towering cliffs on handmade ladders, to harvest honey nestled under jagged overhangs. In spring, the Gurung’s honey contains a rare substance called grayanotoxin from rhododendron flowers that’s known for its intoxicating effects. While some accounts say it’s a deadly poison, others refer to it as an aphrodisiac, powerful medicine, and a hallucinogenic drug. VICE travelled deep into the Annapurna mountains to join a Gurung village on their spring hunt and understand Mad Honey's effects. This was a true multi-sport adventure we had in Peru with so many activities checked off our list of things to do. Over the period of two and half weeks, we visited, Lima where we cycled, toured the beaches, walked the city and explored the magic fountains in the Parque de la Reserva all before our G Adventures tour started. From Lima, we made our way to Cusco with our new friends from G Adventures and our CEO (chief experience officer). In Cusco, we traveled to the Scared Valley, and on our mountain bikes, explored the surrounding mountains, Inca ruins and the Maras Salt Mines. Making our way back to Cusco, we took one first of two “rest” days and used it to zip line across the tops of two mountain peaks. Now the main event was to hike the Inca Trail and make our way to Machu Picchu. Aft...

Peru – a land of extremes and intrigue – principally known for being home to the most important archaeological site in all of the Americas, offers in reality so much more. Its landscapes range from high Andean peaks, to sultry Amazon rainforests, from high altitude deserts and wild windswept coasts. Of course its great to travel with the Incas from Cusco to the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu, but its also possible to get off the beaten track, to explore remote ruins of the cloud warriors in the north, or afro-Peruvian beats along the pacific coast. Most of all it’s a diverse country that offers something for everyone. But for many, a trip to Peru will begin in Cusco. As the ancient Inca capital, and the political power base in colonial times, Cusco has its fair share of sites. Sitting in a na...

In Cusco, and the Sacred Valley, magnificent ruins await the adventurous traveler. The most famous of all is Machu Picchu. Cusco is the former capital of the Inca Empire of the Sun. Since the 16th century, Spanish colonial buildings were built atop former Inca Palaces, of which only the foundations remain. Examples in the central Plaza de Armas are the Cusco Cathedral and La Compañia church. Another striking example is Qorikancha, the former golden courtyard of the Temple of the Sun. The Spanish used stones from Sacsayhuaman, an Inca stronghold overlooking the city. In the Urubamba Valley, or Sacred Valley, visitors can see the mysterious Moray Terraces and the pre-Inca Salt Mines of Maras. Ollantaytambo is a living Inca city and its towering ruins form the start of the Inca Trail to Ma...

This Neo-Classic building was completed in 1938 and stands on the foundation of the former Pizzarro Palace. In the palace gardens is the house in which Pizzarro was killed. Lima, the City of Kings, became the capital of the largest region in Spanish South America and was where the viceroys of the Spanish crown resided. During colonial times this city was the largest, most populated, finest and most cultivated city on the continent. Some of the most beautiful colonial buildings in South America are to be found in Lima’s old town along with carved balconies of Moorish origin. Huaraz is...

License Video: dissolve.com/products?media_type=video&producer;=Pete+R&sort;_by_date=true Peru is hands down my most favorite country in South America. There's so much to do here other than Machu Picchu. First I started off going to the other old cities in the North in Trujillo, spend a few days relaxing in Huachaco, and then a full blown hiking and climbing mountains in Huaraz for 2 weeks. Huaraz is by far the best place to do alpine trekking and mountaineering second to only the Himalayas. The alpines here are stunning and not too difficult to climb. In Huaraz, I went to Laguna 69, summited Mateo, trekked Santa Cruz independently and went way up to 5000m to see a glacier. I could spend like a month just in Huaraz. It's like a little Kathmandu here but with much less tourists! After Hua...

I didn't know much about Ecuador except the Galapagos islands so as I arrived in Quito, my initial planned was to be in the country for 2 weeks and move on to Peru. What I did not realize though was the how much more to Ecuador than it is advertise. Did you know that there are more bird species in Ecaudor than in North America and Europe combined!? Did you know that Ecuador has one of the most concentrated numbers of volcano in an area!? Did you know that there are so many volcanos here, you can be busy hiking them for weeks!? Did you know that you can go off and hike 3 - 4 volcanoes right from Quito and came back and sleep in the city? Me neither! Ecuador is truly a hikers' and nature lover's paradise! Instead of spending only 2 weeks, I spent a whole month traveling around Ecuador. I ...

Some 2,000 years ago, long before the first Incas arrived, the Moche people and later the Chimú, managed to cultivate the arid Moche Valley and build thriving cities such as Chan Chan, made entirely from adobe bricks. Ein gebrochener Arm, ein gebrochenes Herz
Mitten im Höhenflug, ein Häufchen Elend
Dann diese Augen, Dein Blick
Bringt die Wende, bringt mir Glück
Hast mich getröstet, hast mich gepflegt
Bedingungslos, freier Eintritt in meine Seele
Schlafende Geister geweckt
Dummheit gedeckt
Neuen Mut in mich hineingelacht
Oh, nimm Dir, was ich brauch'
