The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is a non-profit zoo located in Powell, Ohio (Liberty Township/Delaware County), just north of Columbus. The land lies along the eastern banks of the O'Shaughnessy Reservoir on the Scioto River, at the intersection of Riverside Drive and Powell Road. It has a worldwide reputation, largely attributable to the efforts and promotion of director emeritus Jack Hanna. In 2009, it was named by the USA Travel Guide as the number one zoo in the United States. It was also ranked number one best zoo in 2012 by Besties Readers Choice.
The Columbus Zoo is home to more than 7,000 animals representing over 800 species and sees over 2.3 million visitors annually. The animal exhibits are divided into regions of the world, with the zoo currently operating eight such regions. In addition the zoo owns an 18-hole golf course, known as the Safari Golf Club which encompasses 56.656 hectares (140 acres). The zoo also owns Zoombezi Bay which encompasses 9.187 hectares (22.70 acres) and Jungle Jack's Landing which encompasses 4.452 hectares (11 acres). In total, the zoo owns 234 hectares (580 acres) of land, with 164.424 hectares (406.30 acres) dedicated to the zoo itself.
Columbus is a Latinized version of the Italian surname "Colombo". It most commonly refers to:
Columbus may also refer to:
In the United States, Columbus may refer to:
A zoo (short for zoological park, zoological garden, or animal park, and also called a menagerie) is a facility in which animals are confined within enclosures, displayed to the public, and in which they may also be bred.
The term zoological garden refers to zoology, the study of animals, a term deriving from the Greek zōon (ζῷον, "animal") and lógos (λóγος, "study"). The abbreviation "zoo" was first used of the London Zoological Gardens, which opened for scientific study in 1828 and to the public in 1857. The number of major animal collections open to the public around the world now exceeds 1,000, around 80 percent of them in cities.
London Zoo, which opened in 1826, first called itself a menagerie or "zoological forest," which is short for "Gardens and Menagerie of the Zoological Society of London." The abbreviation "zoo" first appeared in print in the UK around 1847, when it was used for the Clifton Zoo, but it was not until some 20 years later that the shortened form became popular in the song "Walking in the Zoo on Sunday" by music-hall artist Alfred Vance. The term "zoological park" was used for more expansive facilities in Washington, D.C., and the Bronx in New York, which opened in 1891 and 1899 respectively.
Baby Animals are an Australia Hard Rock band active from 1989 until 1996, and reformed in 2007. They have won numerous ARIA Awards for their music.
The Baby Animals were formed in Sydney in 1989 by singer Suze DeMarchi, drummer Frank Celenza, guitarist Dave Leslie, and bassist Eddie Parise. De Marchi had previously recorded threes singles with EMI in the United Kingdom, and before that had played with Perth bands Photoplay, The Kind, and DD and the Rockmen.
The band's first performance was in November 1989 at the Kardomah Café in Sydney, where they performed under the name 'Woody's Heroes', it was the start of constant touring through the city’s pubs and clubs. The name 'Baby Animals' came about after seeing an advertisement for a local TV show, Wheel of Fortune, hosted by 'Baby John Burgess'. Another version suggests the name came from a calendar in a mall. In at least one interview, however, DeMarchi mentioned they changed the origins of the name in different interviews as it got boring answering the same questions.

I went to the Columbus Zoo on a nice, warmer day in April to see the Polar Bears. I thought they were so neat that I went back in June and July to check out the rest of the zoo. If you haven't been there before, GO! Video recorded April, June, July 2011.
The Columbus Zoo & Aquarium is one of the crown jewels of central Ohio. I recently made a long overdue visit and was thoroughly impressed by the enormous and diverse collection of animals. Unbeknownst to some, there's also a small collection of rides, including a 60-year-old roller coaster and a pirate-themed boat ride. Rather than make one really long video of my day, I split the footage into 2 parts -- part 1 features the rides, and part 2, the animals. Filmed Wednesday, June 29, 2016. Roller coaster POV filmed with permission.

Aurora and her cubs made their debut at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium today! Check out the highlights from this ‘beary’ special day for this little boy and girl. Aurora’s twins and Anana’s cub are ambassadors for their cousins in the Arctic. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is dedicated to conserving polar bear populations in their native range. Since 2008, the Zoo has contributed more than $250,000 to research benefiting polar bears in the tundra. The Zoo is also designated as an Arctic Ambassador Center by Polar Bears International. The names for the twins will be selected by Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and The Wilds staff through one of the many employee initiatives raising funds for conservation. However, we need your help to determine the name for Anana’s cub! You can cast your vote online...

The four young manatees brought to the Columbus Zoo on April 6 for rehabilitation after they were rescued in Florida can now be seen at the Zoos Manatee Coast. Even though an average manatee can weigh more than 1,000 lbs. they have very little body fat to keep them warm and it is difficult for a manatee to survive in water when the temperature is below 68 degrees. In cold water the manatees metabolism slows leading to digestion problems, decreased appetite, and associated weight loss which weakens their immune systems and makes them vulnerable to environmental toxins resulting in infections and skin sores. It has been a difficult year for endangered manatees due to prolonged, record low temperatures in Florida resulting in the vast majority of the more than 450 manatee deaths an...
Three fishing cats (Prionailurus viverrinus) were born at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium on Jul. 29, 2011. The kittens, two males and one female, are being cared for by their mother in a secluded den where they will remain until they are several weeks old. This is the first offspring for this pair of fishing cats that came to the Columbus Zoo in 2010 as part of the Species Survival Plan for these endangered animals. Adult fishing cats are twice the size of a domestic cat and range in weight from 15-35 pounds; males weigh significantly more than females. As many as four kittens are born after a gestation period of about 63 days and the kittens weighed approximately six ounces at birth. Kittens' eyes open by the 16th day and although they will begin eating meat when they are a few months ...
These 3 lion cubs were born on September 22. They are the first litter for mother Asali and father Tomo and the first born at the Columbus Zoo in 24 years. The pairing of Asali and Tomo was recommended by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan (SSP) for African lions. The AZA, of which the Columbus Zoo is an accredited member, strives to maintain a sustainable population of lions in North America. Currently there are 349 African lions in 98 institutions in North America. Of those 349 animals only 176 are pedigreed meaning lions with known ancestry. The Columbus Zoo lions are one of only 31 pairs of pedigreed lions recommended for breeding by the SSP to maintain genetic diversity. Once common in Africa, lions recently became a global issue when scientific eviden...

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has achieved another significant first with the successful hatching of a North Island brown kiwi (Apteryx mantelli) on Mar. 23, 2011. The Columbus Zoo is only the third zoo in North America to successfully hatch a kiwi chick since the first one hatched at Smithsonian's National Zoo in 1975 and this chick is only the fifth kiwi to successfully hatch in as many years. "The fact this egg successfully hatched is a testament to the amazing care and attention given by our staff in consultation with professional colleagues around the world" said Columbus Zoo and Aquarium President and CEO Dale Schmidt. "Like an expectant parent, kiwi expert Kathy Brader from Smithsonian's National Zoo rushed to Central Ohio to be here and assist our team with the newly hatched chic...

Columbus Rotary Club Luncheon 10/27/2014. Topic: Columbus Zoo and Aquarium
I am going to the Zoo
To see the monkey,
I just wonder if he's really
Singing funky.
I am going to the Zoo
To see the elephant,
I just wanna listen to him
Playing through his trunk.
All my friends are at the Zoo,
There's a giraffe, lion, monkey too,
Rhino and hippo are looking for you,
They are all waiting at the Zoo.
Let's go, let's go to the Zoo.
Let's go, let's go to the Zoo.
I am going to the Zoo
To give giraffe her lunch,
I just want to watch her do the
Munch, munch, munch...
I am going to the Zoo
To see the lioness,
I just want to roar with her
Yes, yes, yes - yes, yes, yes.
All my friends are at the Zoo,
There's a giraffe, lion, monkey too,
Rhino and hippo are looking for you,
They are all waiting at the Zoo.
Let's go, let's go to the Zoo.
Let's go, let's go to the Zoo.
I am going to the Zoo
To see the hyena,
I just want to laugh with her
Ha, ha, ha - ha, ha, ha.
I am going to the Zoo
I'll see the wolf soon,
I just want to sit together,
Howling to the moon.
All my friends are at the Zoo,
There's a giraffe, lion, monkey too,
Rhino and hippo are looking for you,
They are all waiting at the Zoo.
Let's go, let's go to the Zoo.
Let's go, let's go to the Zoo.
