Why the US celebrates Columbus Day
Should Columbus Day be Indigenous Peoples’ Day?

In past decades, Christopher Columbus has gone from unquestioned US hero to problematic figure. For centuries, the destruction and disease he ushered into the Americas have been set aside, allowing the myth of a pioneering sailor who discovered America and proved the world was round to embed itself in US culture. But as this myth has been increasingly confronted with brutal historical facts, things have started to change.
While Columbus still has a national holiday in his honor, complete with parades and celebrations, there are many people fighting to dismantle the myth that surrounds him and choosing to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day instead.

In Defense of Columbus: An Exaggerated Evil
Acknowledging the Past | Columbus in Context - https://youtu.be/ZEw8c6TmzGg
Columbus is a controversial historical figure who is widely viewed as terrible. Every year we question whether we should continue to have a day to celebrate his discovery. But as with most stories, his bad deeds have been exaggerated to make him fit the role of a villain.

Columbus Day Vs. Indigenous Peoples Day
Video #451: Columbus Day Vs. Indigenous Peoples Day
Season 2, Episode 91
Subject: Social Studies
Video Description:
This is a comparison video about Columbus Day & Indigenous Peoples Day. Some people consider that Columbus Day should not be celebrated because of the brutal historical facts and false information that Christopher Columbus did not discover America. In the year 1992, Indigenous Peoples Day was first observed at Berkeley, California to honor the lost lives of Native Americans during the massacre.
Honestly, I would prefer "Indigenous Peoples Day" instead of "Columbus Day" because of misleading information and myths about Christopher Columbus. Although he was a great Italian explorer it still remains today as Columbus being a notorious icon in World History.

NOTES:
⚫ Columbus Day & Indigenous Peoples Day are both holidays.
