It happened shortly before 11 p.m. in the 1900 block of Oakland Park Avenue, located between Cleveland Avenue and Westerville Road, 10TV's Maureen Kocot reported.

Police Called When Crowd Signing Up For Housing List Gets 'Out Of Control'
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Columbus Police sprayed Mace on several people in a crowd that had gathered to sign up for a list to get subsidized housing at a northwest Columbus apartment complex.
Police said the crowd started to gather Friday night for the Saturday morning event at The Heritage apartment complex on Gatewood Road near Sunbury Road in northeast Columbus.
Authorities said that its highest number, the crowd reached 2,000 people.
Residents in the area called police overnight and complained about the noise and number of cars in the neighborhood.
According to police, a melee broke out when the manager of the complex started to set up for the event just before 7 a.m. Saturday morning.

On December 8th, 2004, a tragedy took place at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio. Five people lost their lives including Darrell "Dimebag" Abbott, Erin Halk, Nathan Bray and Jeff Thompson. This is news from the day after.
December 8th, 2014 marks the 10th anniversary. Ten years. I can't believe it. I originally was going to go to the show but I had switched to 2nd shift with Nationwide that evening, thus the reason I wasn't there. I remember getting calls from friends asking if I was alright and I had no idea what they were talking about until future explanation. I went home and turned on the news and was completely shocked what I was hearing and seeing. This is a venue that is twenty minutes from my house. This was a place where I have seen literally hundreds of bands. As with many others, hearing this news was shocking and very upsetting. As soon as I got home from work that evening I went online and sat back and watched the news trickle in across the country on message boards and artists pages. I saved many of those reactions. The local news on every station in this area covered the story while trying to find answers as to why this happened.
I had just gotten a DVR a few weeks before and literally filled it up the following day with just news coverage. Right before I left for work on the 9th, I got a call from WBNS to see if I would be up for doing a quick interview about the band. I was completely confused as to why I was asked as I wasn't at the show. I did however hang out with Dime a few times over the years and that what was why I was asked. There weren't a lot of fans who attended the show willing to talk on camera about the band. Needless to say, I thought doing the interview was a small way of making sure people didn't forget. The video below is a collection of news stories from the day after the tragedy took place. I am posting this to never forget those that lost their lives that evening and to reflect on something that unfortunately is part of the history of my city. COLUMBUS, Ohio- Columbus police say an officer opened fire as he tried to apprehend a suspect, later identified by police as 32-year old Jason Christian, around 5:30 Wednesday night.
Sgt. Rich Weiner says two officers had been tracking Christian who he says was wanted on warrants from Whitehall.
They say he was also wanted on suspicion of thefts of items from inside several motor vehicles.
Weiner says when officers got Christian to pull over at the Mobil lot, they approached his car to inform him he was under arrest.
As an officer tried to remove him from the car, Weiner says Christian tried to drive off, dragging the officer.
He says at one point the officer was hit by another vehicle in the same lot.
"The officer fired his weapon, and struck the suspect, at that time both the suspect and the officer rolled out of the car into the parking lot."
Police say Christian was taken to Grant Medical Center where he later died.
The officer, who's name hasn't been released, was also taken in for treatment of minor injuries, and is expected to be okay, according to Weiner.
Weiner says the officer fired multiple times, but it's not clear how many hit Christian, who he said wasn't armed.
A second officer helping during the traffic stop wasn't hurt.
Detectives say surveillance images from the Mobil lot that captured the ordeal will be used as part of the review of the investigation.

Fentanyl, a heavy opioid known for killing Prince, has already figured in 55 fatal drug overdoses in Columbus in January and February, the local coroner reported Friday. It's a powerful painkiller that the U.S. DEA says is 25 to 50 times more powerful than heroin. "The headline is that this is almost half the total number of fentanyl-related deaths we logged all of last year," Franklin County Coroner spokeswoman Tia Moretti told NBC News.

Fentanyl, a heavy opioid known for killing Prince, has already figured in 55 fatal drug overdoses in Columbus in January and February, the local coroner reported Friday. It's a powerful painkiller that the U.S. DEA says is 25 to 50 times more powerful than heroin. December 8th, 2014 marks the 10th anniversary. Ten years. I can't believe it. I originally was going to go to the show but I had switched to 2nd shift with Nationwide that evening, thus the reason I wasn't there. I remember getting calls from friends asking if I was alright and I had no idea what they were talking about until future explanation. I went home and turned on the news and was completely shocked what I was hearing and seeing. This is a venue that is twenty minutes from my house. This was a place where I have seen literally hundreds of bands. As with many others, hearing this news was shocking and very upsetting. As soon as I got home from work that evening I went online and sat back and watched the news trickle in across the country on message boards and artists pages. I saved many of those reactions. The local news on every station in this area covered the story while trying to find answers as to why this happened.
I had just gotten a DVR a few weeks before and literally filled it up the following day with just news coverage. Right before I left for work on the 9th, I got a call from WBNS to see if I would be up for doing a quick interview about the band. I was completely confused as to why I was asked as I wasn't at the show. I did however hang out with Dime a few times over the years and that what was why I was asked. There weren't a lot of fans who attended the show willing to talk on camera about the band. Needless to say, I thought doing the interview was a small way of making sure people didn't forget. The video below is a collection of news stories from the day after the tragedy took place. I am posting this to never forget those that lost their lives that evening and to reflect on something that unfortunately is part of the history of my city. COLUMBUS, Ohio- Columbus police say an officer opened fire as he tried to apprehend a suspect, later identified by police as 32-year old Jason Christian, around 5:30 Wednesday night.
Sgt. Rich Weiner says two officers had been tracking Christian who he says was wanted on warrants from Whitehall.
They say he was also wanted on suspicion of thefts of items from inside several motor vehicles.
Weiner says when officers got Christian to pull over at the Mobil lot, they approached his car to inform him he was under arrest.
As an officer tried to remove him from the car, Weiner says Christian tried to drive off, dragging the officer.
He says at one point the officer was hit by another vehicle in the same lot.
"The officer fired his weapon, and struck the suspect, at that time both the suspect and the officer rolled out of the car into the parking lot."
Police say Christian was taken to Grant Medical Center where he later died.
The officer, who's name hasn't been released, was also taken in for treatment of minor injuries, and is expected to be okay, according to Weiner.
Weiner says the officer fired multiple times, but it's not clear how many hit Christian, who he said wasn't armed.
A second officer helping during the traffic stop wasn't hurt.
Detectives say surveillance images from the Mobil lot that captured the ordeal will be used as part of the review of the investigation.

COLUMBUS, Ohio- Columbus police say an officer opened fire as he tried to apprehend a suspect, later identified by police as 32-year old Jason Christian, around 5:30 Wednesday night.
Sgt. Rich Weiner says two officers had been tracking Christian who he says was wanted on warrants from Whitehall.
They say he was also wanted on suspicion of thefts of items from inside several motor vehicles.
Weiner says when officers got Christian to pull over at the Mobil lot, they approached his car to inform him he was under arrest.
As an officer tried to remove him from the car, Weiner says Christian tried to drive off, dragging the officer.
He says at one point the officer was hit by another vehicle in the same lot.
"The officer fired his weapon, and struck the suspect, at that time both the suspect and the officer rolled out of the car into the parking lot."
Police say Christian was taken to Grant Medical Center where he later died.
The officer, who's name hasn't been released, was also taken in for treatment of minor injuries, and is expected to be okay, according to Weiner.
Weiner says the officer fired multiple times, but it's not clear how many hit Christian, who he said wasn't armed.
A second officer helping during the traffic stop wasn't hurt.
Detectives say surveillance images from the Mobil lot that captured the ordeal will be used as part of the review of the investigation.

The study determined that 25% of women in central Ohio are not economically secure.
The study also showed that the Columbus area is similar to the rest of the country. For example, nationally women earn 77 cents on the dollar of male earners and the local comparison is 78 cents to the dollar. The research found that there are more women working in central Ohio, 63%, than the national rate of 58%, but it did not qualify whether that was from necessity or choice, whether they were low-wage or middle management positions.
Some results of the study were no surprise including the on-going challenges to find affordable, quality childcare. As expected, there was a correlation between level of education and income yet with all levels of education, men were out-earning women.
The research also included community conversations which brought attention to other concerns that are difficult to measure yet cause for concern. These conversations brought to light how some women stay in unhealthy relationships for economic security; they do not have the means to leave a threatening or dangerous relationship.
"The Women's Fund of Central Ohio is proud to be a part of this research on the status of women in central Ohio. We now look to partner with the community to forge solutions to the issues challenging women, building on the solutions that are already having positive impact," said Nicole Dunn, president and CEO of The Women's Fund of Central Ohio.

Asian Festival 2011, Columbus, Ohio For centuries, Laos and Thailand shared the same culture, food, clothing, and language. Today, the Thai and Lao folkloric tradition incorporates a wide repertoire of folk dances (fon phun muang), some based on ancient animist rituals, some developed in celebration of the passing of the seasons and others adapted from courtly performance genres. The group will perform folk dances that are rooted in the rice fields of Laos and Thailand.

The OhioHealth Rehabilitation Hospital has an inpatient facility that is all about the hands on approach. Amy Cowgill, an occupational therapist, works on reestablishing the mind-body connection that many patients lose after having a stroke. She talks about how the hospital focuses on training patients in activities such as daily living, self-care, bathing, dressing, and all the necessities that patients need to learn again to return home.
Each patient is assigned a team at the OhioHealth Rehabilitation Hospital. Therapists focus on occupational, physical, speech, and recreational healing. There are also physical medicine doctors who guide the team and care. Along with the therapists and physical medical doctors, there are experienced case managers, dietitians, pharmacists, 24 hour nursing care, psychology therapy, respiratory therapy, and the lists goes on. It is clear the hospital is dedicated to providing very comprehensive care. Patients also spend hours a day with equipment towards balance, strength training, and coordination.
Dr. Julie Rindler talked about how their team is constantly working at achieving better outcomes. The hospital offers weekly classes and a stroke mentorship program. Anyone who has been through a devastating event like a stroke knows that hope and inspiration aren’t always easy to come by. They also stress prevention and healthy lifestyle choices to prevent stroke from happening again.

And then I bring the communication tools that I have used all along, that make it very easy for me to talk to patients, to put them at ease, to make certain they understand, to be able to read the situation and see if more of an explanation is needed, different approach is needed. That there is a comfort and a support that can be given to people. It's not going to be the same as having family there, but it could feel very much like having a good, wise educated friend-- and people refer to it as having a doctor in the family and that's almost the feeling that it has because it's that soft touch, low-tech part of medicine, it's that bedside manner. It's that essence of what people remember medicine used to be like or if their own position was given a bonus half an hour that they could sit and have an encounter with you, it would have that feel.
That's what people are missing. I think an advocate gets to bring that back into the mix, still providing and helping you sort through the medical aspects of things, but then giving you the comfort and the support and the assurance that if it needs to be explained twice, it will be explained twice, if it needs to be explained ten times, we will explain it ten times. And there's that ability to be on a layman's term that puts people at ease that allows a little bit different relationship to form.

Foley makes the case the Art’s critical value is to develop learners that think like Artists which means learners who are creative, curious, that seek questions, develop ideas, and play. For that to happen society will need to stop the pervasive, problematic and cliché messaging that implies that creativity is somehow defined as artistic skill. Cindy Meyers Foley is the Executive Assistant Director and Director of Learning and Experience at the Columbus Museum of Art. Foley worked to reimagine the CMA as a 21st century institution that is transformative, active, and participatory. An institution that impacts the health and growth of the community by cultivating, celebrating and championing creativity. Foley envisioned and led the charge to open the 18,000 sq. ft. Center for Creativity in 2011. In 2013, the museum received the National Medal for Museums in recognition of this work. Foley guest edited and wrote chapters for Intentionality and the Twenty-First-Century Museum, for the summer 2014 Journal of Museum Education.
In 2012, Foley received the Greater Columbus Arts Council Community Arts Partnership award for Arts Educator. She was a keynote speaker for the OAEA (Ohio Art Education Association) 2012 Conference. She is on the Faculty of Harvard University’s Future of Learning Summer Institute.
Foley is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and The Ohio State University. Prior to joining the Museum, she was with the Institute of Contemporary Art at the Maine College of Art, the Portland Museum of Art, and the Wexner Center for the Arts.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. My View On Columbus Ohio
During the filming for this I went exploring all over the different areas of Columbus Ohio with my camera and recorded some of the really interesting things that it had to offer or I happen to see. I filmed at places such as OSU Stadium to skyline shots, hidden street art and certain events held in the city while filming for this so you will recognize certain things but there may be some places and stuff you wont. Just keep in mind nothing was scripted and its all located in Columbus so keep your eyes open and enjoy. During the filming for this I went exploring all over the different areas of Columbus Ohio with my camera and recorded some of the really interesting things that it had to offer or I happen to see. I filmed at places such as OSU Stadium to skyline shots, hidden street art and certain events held in the city while filming for this so you will recognize certain things but there may be some places and stuff you wont. Just keep in mind nothing was scripted and its all located in Columbus so keep your eyes open and enjoy.

Columbus is the capital of and the largest city in the U.S. state of Ohio. The Columbus metropolitan area, which encompasses several counties, is the third largest in Ohio behind Cleveland and Cincinnati. Columbus is home to the world's largest private research and development foundation, the Battelle Memorial Institute; Chemical Abstracts Service, the world's largest clearinghouse of chemical information; NetJets, the world's largest fractional ownership jet aircraft fleet; and The Ohio State University, the nation's largest campus.[18]
In 2011, the city had five corporations in the U.S. Fortune 500, including Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, American Electric Power, Limited Brands, Momentive Specialty Chemicals, and Big Lots.[19] Major foreign corporations operating or with divisions in the city include Germany-based Siemens and Roxane Laboratories, Finland-based Vaisala, Tomasco Mulciber Inc., A Y Manufacturing, Yachiyo of America and US Yachiyo, Inc.
