Man grabbed 17-year-old girl in Gungahlin act of indecency

A man grabbed and indecently assaulted a 17-year-old girl in Gungahlin on Thursday evening, police say.

About 5:30pm, the man, who was riding a mountain bike, approached the teenager near the playground at Yerrabi Pond on Wunderlich Street.

He dismounted his bike and struck up a conversation with the girl before she walked away from him along the path near Mirrabei Drive.

Half an hour later, at the roundabout intersection with Paul Coe Crescent and Mirrabei Drive, police allege the same man grabbed the girl and committed an act of indecency.

In August last year, a man also believed to have been on a mountain bike indecently assaulted a 13-year-old girl jogging around Yerrabi Ponds.

An ACT Policing spokeswoman confirmed no offender had yet been identified for the 2016 assault and investigations were ongoing.

While there were no active links between the two incidents as yet, ACT Policing Criminal Investigations Superintendent Ben Cartwright said police were following all lines of enquiry.

"[We] won't rule anything out at this early stage of the investigation," he said.

The man believed to be involved in Thursday's incident is described as being Caucasian in appearance with an olive complexion, 5'6" tall, aged in his 20's, of a thin to medium build with long hair and a European accent. He was wearing a dark jumper or windcheater, dark jeans, a black beanie and a red bike helmet. He was riding a dark coloured mountain bike.

"Given the time of day, police believe there may have been people walking or jogging nearby," Superintendent Cartwright said.

"We're asking the public to cast their minds back to Thursday evening about 5.30pm to 6pm and remember if they saw a man matching this description in the area.

"Any information you can give, no matter how small it may, might help police."

Witnesses are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, quoting reference number 6111871.
