The Daily Mail is a British daily conservative, middle-markettabloid newspaper owned by the Daily Mail and General Trust.
First published in 1896 by Lord Northcliffe, it is the United Kingdom's second biggest-selling daily newspaper after The Sun. Its sister paper The Mail on Sunday was launched in 1982. Scottish and Irish editions of the daily paper were launched in 1947 and 2006 respectively. The Daily Mail was Britain's first daily newspaper aimed at the newly-literate "lower-middle class market resulting from mass education, combining a low retail price with plenty of competitions, prizes and promotional gimmicks", and was the first British paper to sell a million copies a day.
It was at the outset a newspaper for women, the first to provide features especially for them, and as of the second-half of 2013 had a 54.77% female readership, the only British newspaper whose female readers constitute more than 50% of its demographic.
It had an average daily circulation of 1,708,006 copies in March 2014. Between July and December 2013 it had an average daily readership of approximately 3.951 million, of whom approximately 2.503 million were in the ABC1 demographic and 1.448 million in the C2DE demographic. Its website has more than 100 million unique visitors per month.

John Sweeney reports on John Whittingdale's confirmation to Newsnight that he had had a relationship with a woman who turned out - unbeknownst to him - to be a sex worker - a fact HE discovered from a reporter. The details of that relationship went unpublished - to the surprise of many. Maybe the newspapers never considered a story about the private lives of two consenting adults worth running. Or maybe there were more political reasons behind the decision to hold back. We may never know. But John Whittingdale - who was at the time - head of the Culture select committee - now sits at the very top of a department who's job is to regulate newspapers. Indeed, he is currently overseeing a whole new regulatory framework under consideration in the wake of the Leveson inquiry. So has his position...

Parliaments first vote was the Referendum Act. Their second vote was at the ballot box, MP's as citizen, on 23rd June. Now they've been given a third vote. They seemingly dislike being "out of control" to the public (a 'lower' power) through direct democracy, yet are happy to ceed power away to a 'high' power the EU. If the Government's position in the courts wasn't that "Triggering Article 50 is irrevocable" then they would have won the case, as it was a rights case. Shows if you have enough money & a multi-millionnaire husband, you can find a clever enough lawyer to win any case for you. Sad day. Remoaners have put our world-respected legal system in a very difficult position. Comment by Laura Kuenssberg & John Whittingdale on Daily Politics, 24th January 2017.

But his Charter Renewal green paper questions its scope, scale, purpose – even the commissioning of shows like The Voice. And the behind-closed-doors licence fee agreement has left the BBC facing cuts of up to £400million. 2016 has been a year of political paradoxes in Europe. 52% of UK voters in the so-called Brexit referendum decided it was time to cut membership with the European Union. Meanwhile Ukrainians continued on the difficult path towards implementing European values and systems. Strengthening democracy, rule-of-law and reforms are the main ambitions many fought for during the Euromaidan uprising. Following the UK’s June 23 vote, analysts have been pouring over statistics and statements, trying to predict any future fallout on Ukraine and the broader European bloc. John Whittingdale, the UK’s former culture secretary and staunch Brexiter is one of them. He told Hromadske the UK government will remain a strong voice globally and that the UK’s future support for Ukraine will not waver. “The fact t...
