Robertson was the Election Co-ordinator for the Scottish National party's successful 2007 and 2011 Scottish Parliament election campaigns and was appointed to run the SNP's campaign for the 2015 UK general election He also served as the SNP Campaign Director for the 2014 Scottish independence referendum.
Robertson was born in Wimbledon, London, to a Scottish father, Struan, who was an engineer, and a German mother, Anna, who was a nurse. Robertson was brought up in Edinburgh and speaks fluent German. He was educated at Broughton High School, Edinburgh and the University of Aberdeen, where he graduated in 1991 with an MA Honours degree in politics and international relations. Angus (Scottish Gaelic: Aonghas) is one of the 32 local government council areas of Scotland, a registration county and a lieutenancy area. The council area borders Aberdeenshire, Dundee City and Perth and Kinross. Main industries include agriculture and fishing. Global pharmaceuticals company GSK has a significant presence in Montrose in the north of the county.
Angus was historically a county, known officially as Forfarshire from the 18th century until 1928. It remains a registration county and a lieutenancy area. In 1975 its administrative functions were transferred to the council district of the Tayside Region, and in 1995 further reform resulted in the establishment of the unitary Angus Council.
The area that now comprises Angus has been occupied since at least the Neolithic period. Material taken from postholes from an enclosure at Douglasmuir, near Friockheim, about five miles north of Arbroath have been radiocarbon dated to around 3500 BC The function of the enclosure is unknown, but may have been for agriculture or for ceremonial purposes.

Andrew Neil goes in hard with both men. Angus Robertson comes out of it with credit. Murdo Fraser trots out old, failed Tory mantras while his Westminster Party and London masters implode in chaos on multiple crumbling battle fronts - split party, Brexit, South Thanet, budget U-turns - with an unelected PM ill-equipped to tackle any of them. And there's the little matter of Scotland, about to exit the Union - at which point the United Kingdom ceases to exist as the name of the state and the term Great Britain reverts to being a geographical terms for a group of islands.
