Eliot Ness' Hard-Boiled Monologue | Scenes from The Untouchables
📺 Read our episode review and breakdown here: https://theuntouchables.co/one-armed-bandits/
In a rare hard-boiled monologue from the otherwise taciturn Eliot Ness, he dresses Frank O’Dean down despite being held at gunpoint. An engrossing, action-packed hour filled with great performances by Robert Stack and Harry Guardino, "One-Armed Bandits" is also one of the program’s most successful endeavors at humanizing Ness and adding shades of gray to its heavies. O’Dean is remorseful and conflicted and Ness is charitable and compassionate without losing his edge. The sense of history between Ness and O’Dean is well characterized and supporting characters like Julian Glass add to pathos to the proceedings.

Kevin Costner stars as Ness, a federal agent who has come to Chicago during the Prohibition Era, when corruption in the local police department is rampant. His mission is to put crime lord Capone (Robert De Niro) out of business, but Capone is so powerful and popular that Ness is not taken seriously by the law or the press. One night, discouraged, he meets a veteran patrolman, Jimmy Malone (Sean Connery), and discovers that the acerbic Irishman is the one honest man he's been seeking. Malone has soon helped Ness recruit a gunslinger rookie, George Stone (Andy Garcia), and, joined by nebbish accountant Oscar Wallace (Charles Martin Smith), the men doggedly pursue Capone and his illegal interests. At first a laughingstock, Ness soon has Capone outraged over his and Malone's sometimes law-bending tactics, and the vain mobster strikes back in vicious style. Ultimately, it is the most unexpected and minor of crimes, tax evasion, which proves Capone's undoing. All of the credits for The Untouchables boasted big names, including music from Ennio Morricone and costumes by Giorgio Armani. Director Brian De Palma continued his tradition of including a homage to past masters of the cinema with a taut stairway shoot-out reminiscent of a similar sequence in Sergei Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin (1925).

Although "The Otto Frick Story" begins quite forcefully, it wanders around and loses focus early on. It is the only program to address the Nazi phenomenon in its infancy. The marriage of German Nazis and American gangsters does have historical precedent, but this installment, severely underplayed with three small characters and a token assault on a Jewish-owned delicatessen, doesn’t capture the epic of the scope of the drama.
Narrator Walter Winchell, like many among Desilu’s creative time, was Jewish. In his career as a radio correspondent, Winchell eagerly assailed pro-fascists, pro-Nazi, and their enablers throughout the 1930s including the German American Bund and Charles Lindbergh. Winchell's real-life assault on the Nazis in the press gives extra gravitas to his finely written concluding narration.
The Nazis did in fact host a rally at Madison Square Garden on February 20th, 1939 and this is the rally featured in the episode’s archival footage. It is the use of this footage and the attempt to intertwine the story of the Nazi Fifth Column and gangsterdom that perhaps best illustrates the show's growing tendency to stretch historical accuracy, making it seem almost Twilight Zone-esque that Ness would ever fight the Nazis.
