In this episode we take a look at some facts, secrets, and history of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The SNES is a gaming device developed by Nintendo. In its native country of Japan, the console is named the Super Famicom. The system is Nintendo's second home console, following the Nintendo Entertainment System, or NES for short. It had similar success to its predecessor, and became the best-selling console of the 16-bit era globally. This was partly thanks to Nintendo's all-star franchises such as Mario, Zelda, and Donkey Kong.

Episode 38 - The North American launch of the Super Nintendo. Although the 16-bit generation started in the late summer of 1989 with the near-simultaneous launch of the Sega Genesis and TurboGrafx-16, the release of the Super Nintendo in August of 1991 signaled the real start of the 16-bit console war. The system came bundled with Super Mario World as the pack-in game, and on launch day two additional games were available; F-Zero and Pilotwings. Many believe that Gradius III and SimCity were also launch titles, but these games were actually released the following week, just missing being part of the launch line-up.

- At around 7:07 in the video, I accidentally refer to Actraiser as "Axelay" Unfortunately, there is no way to fix this without deleting this video and re-uploading. I put an annotation in the video, but people watching on non-desktop platforms aren't going to see it.
- Production of this video began the same day that the Sega Saturn launch episode was released; December 25, 2015. This episode therefore took 7 months to complete, although I took breaks to make the History of NHL '94 and DieHard Gamefan videos.
- The footage of Uemura, the guys working at Nintendo EAD, Miyamoto in his cubicle, and Miyamoto drawing mario (during the end credits) all game from an early 90's French documentary called "Otaku". You can check it out here but it isn't in english, unfortunately: https://youtu.be/JWiAEThmnGk
- All of the gameplay footage for this episode was recoded using an RGB-modded SNES mini, as it produces a sharper image than an older "original" SNES.
- Graduis III and SimCity WERE NOT LAUNCH TITLES. I can't stress this enough times. The three games featured in this episode were the only three that were available on launch day. Period.
- This was the fifth episode covering the launch of a console.
- I had to re-record the F-Zero footage 4 times because the beta version of the Elgato software that I was using kept dropping the audio.
- I mentioned in the outro to the show that I get my box art from Matt Henzel of VideoGameObsession.com. I should have said "much of this comes from..." because he is not my only source. He has however given me permission to use any material on his site, and asked only for credit in my videos. As has always been the case, the bulk of the box art seen on this show comes from The Cover Project.
- I did not play through the complete game when recording Super Mario World footage. I have beaten the games multiple times in the past, but have received negative comments from viewers for showing too much of some games. If you haven't beaten SMW, you should do it for yourself instead of watching someone else do it.

The fourth generation console war is probably the most intense period of battle in video gaming history, and certainly the most controversial with angry fans on both sides.

Nintendo gave us a cool little surprise in the form of the NES Classic Edition. The mini NES that sold out immediately has 30 classic games on it that are pretty awesome. Mega Man 2, Zelda and Super Mario Bros. 3 are some of the video game staples you can play. We sincerely hope that the success of the NES Classic Edition will inspire Nintendo to do a mini version of the Super Nintendo. We have so many fond memories of that console. In case they decide to make one, here are 10 games that must be on the SNES Mini!
1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time
It’s pizza time! There’s nothing quite like kicking the ass of foot ninjas with a few of your closest friends. Unfortunately, each new attempt at a Turtles game has fallen short in recent years. That’s what makes revisiting Turtles in Time still worth it. This classic beat 'em up is short and the gameplay is pretty repetitive but that doesn’t make it any less fun to play. Turtles in Time is just such a wonderfully polished, personality-packed little piece of videogame history.
2. NBA Jam Tournament Edition
He’s on fire! Remember when sports games were all about fun? NBA Jam Tournament Edition is a '90s arcade classic that took nearly every rule of the game and threw it out the window. The cartoony, over the top style of this game is what makes it so accessible to everyone. It is just a 2-on-2 basketball game but with insanely high dunks, crazy field goal percentage and almost no rules. We also have to mention the announcers who have great lines like Razzle Dazzle!, He’s on fire! and Boomshackalacka!
3. Super Mario Kart
Nintendo got a lot of things right on the first try, and Super Mario Kart is no exception. While each new Mario Kart sequel has added features and looked better, everything that made these improvements possible can be found in the original. Conquering Super Mario Kart's single-player cup competitions was fun, but it was in split-screen multiplayer where the game really excelled.
4. Street Fighter II Turbo
Street Fighter II Turbo is an excellent showcase of why everyone fell in love with the fighting franchise in the first place. It was faster than the original console port, hence the “Turbo” in the title, which was a major selling point for fans. This version of the game also included numerous changes to character’s movesets and combos, while adding a number of new fighters to the fray. In our book Street Fighter II Turbo remains the definitive fighting game on Super Nintendo.
5. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddys Kong's Quest
The 3D esque graphics of Donkey Kong Country blew our minds back in the day and really pushed the Super Nintendo to its limits. While the original was better known for its graphics than its gameplay Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong's Quest was the complete package.
6. Contra III: The Alien Wars
Sometimes you just want to pick up a spread gun and blast everything to bits. For those times it’s good to have a copy of Contra III - The Alien Wars ready to go. This sequel fast-forwarded the action to the distant future and improved not only the aesthetics, but also the scope and storyline of the game.
7. Chrono Trigger
The Super Nintendo is home to some of the best RPGs ever made and Chrono Trigger is definitely one of them. The game was assembled by a dream team of creative talent from the Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Dragon Ball franchises. The story about time travel hooked us from the start and brought some great gameplay with it.
8. Super Metroid
Super Metroid is one of the most atmospheric games on the Super Nintendo. With hints of space-bound horror movies like Alien in its long, creeping corridors, the visuals completely sucked us in. The tense brooding music and terrifying enemy encounters scared the hell out of us.
9. Super Mario World
Super Mario World is one of the best launch titles in the history of gaming. The extra power of the Super Nintendo allowed Miyamoto to perfect his platforming ideas that started on the NES. Mario World didn’t reinvent platform gaming, but it did find a way to make it seem fresh again.

10. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is such a good game that many gamers consider it to be their favorite game of all time. Nintendo took the formula laid out in the original NES release, and transformed it into something really quite magical. Players started out in regular old Hyrule, but would soon visit a parallel Dark World.

Nintendo Entertainment System

Super Mario
Super Mario (Japanese: スーパーマリオ, Hepburn: Sūpā Mario) is a series of platform video games created by Nintendo featuring their mascot, Mario. Alternatively called the Super Mario Bros. (スーパーマリオブラザーズ, Sūpā Mario Burazāzu) series or simply the Mario (マリオ) series, it is the central series of the greater Mario franchise. At least one Super Mario game has been released for every major Nintendo video game console and handheld.
The Super Mario games follow Mario's adventures in the fictional Mushroom Kingdom, usually with Mario as the player character. He is usually joined by his brother, Luigi, and occasionally by other members of the Mario cast. As in platform video games, the player runs and jumps across platforms and atop enemies in themed levels. The games have simple plots, typically with Mario rescuing the kidnapped Princess Peach from the primary antagonist, Bowser. The mini NES that sold out immediately has 30 classic games on it that are pretty awesome. Mega Man 2, Zelda and Super Mario Bros. 3 are some of the video game staples you can play. We sincerely hope that the success of the NES Classic Edition will inspire Nintendo to do a mini version of the Super Nintendo. We have so many fond memories of that console. In case they decide to make one, here are 10 games that must be on the SNES Mini! 1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time It’s pizza time! There’s nothing quite like kicking the ass of foot ninjas with a few of your closest friends. Unfortunately, each new attempt at a Turtles game has fallen short in recent years. That’s what makes revisiting Turtles in Time still worth it. This classic beat 'em up is short and the gameplay is pretty repetitive but that doesn’t make it any less fun to play. Turtles in Time is just such a wonderfully polished, personality-packed little piece of videogame history. 2. NBA Jam Tournament Edition He’s on fire! Remember when sports games were all about fun? NBA Jam Tournament Edition is a '90s arcade classic that took nearly every rule of the game and threw it out the window. The cartoony, over the top style of this game is what makes it so accessible to everyone. It is just a 2-on-2 basketball game but with insanely high dunks, crazy field goal percentage and almost no rules. We also have to mention the announcers who have great lines like Razzle Dazzle!, He’s on fire! and Boomshackalacka! 3. Super Mario Kart Nintendo got a lot of things right on the first try, and Super Mario Kart is no exception. While each new Mario Kart sequel has added features and looked better, everything that made these improvements possible can be found in the original. Conquering Super Mario Kart's single-player cup competitions was fun, but it was in split-screen multiplayer where the game really excelled. 4. Street Fighter II Turbo Street Fighter II Turbo is an excellent showcase of why everyone fell in love with the fighting franchise in the first place. It was faster than the original console port, hence the “Turbo” in the title, which was a major selling point for fans. This version of the game also included numerous changes to character’s movesets and combos, while adding a number of new fighters to the fray. In our book Street Fighter II Turbo remains the definitive fighting game on Super Nintendo. 5. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddys Kong's Quest The 3D esque graphics of Donkey Kong Country blew our minds back in the day and really pushed the Super Nintendo to its limits. While the original was better known for its graphics than its gameplay Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong's Quest was the complete package. 6. Contra III: The Alien Wars Sometimes you just want to pick up a spread gun and blast everything to bits. For those times it’s good to have a copy of Contra III - The Alien Wars ready to go. This sequel fast-forwarded the action to the distant future and improved not only the aesthetics, but also the scope and storyline of the game. 7. Chrono Trigger The Super Nintendo is home to some of the best RPGs ever made and Chrono Trigger is definitely one of them. The game was assembled by a dream team of creative talent from the Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Dragon Ball franchises. The story about time travel hooked us from the start and brought some great gameplay with it. 8. Super Metroid Super Metroid is one of the most atmospheric games on the Super Nintendo. With hints of space-bound horror movies like Alien in its long, creeping corridors, the visuals completely sucked us in. The tense brooding music and terrifying enemy encounters scared the hell out of us. 9. Super Mario World Super Mario World is one of the best launch titles in the history of gaming. The extra power of the Super Nintendo allowed Miyamoto to perfect his platforming ideas that started on the NES. Mario World didn’t reinvent platform gaming, but it did find a way to make it seem fresh again. with this one. 10. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is such a good game that many gamers consider it to be their favorite game of all time. Nintendo took the formula laid out in the original NES release, and transformed it into something really quite magical. The Launch of the Super Nintendo (1991)
Episode 38 - The North American launch of the Super Nintendo. Although the 16-bit generation started in the late summer of 1989 with the near-simultaneous launch of the Sega Genesis and TurboGrafx-16, the release of the Super Nintendo in August of 1991 signaled the real start of the 16-bit console war. The system came bundled with Super Mario World as the pack-in game, and on launch day two additional games were available; F-Zero and Pilotwings. Many believe that Gradius III and SimCity were also launch titles, but these games were actually released the following week, just missing being part of the launch line-up. Although the 16-bit generation started in the late summer of 1989 with the near-simultaneous launch of the Sega Genesis and TurboGrafx-16, the release of the Super Nintendo in August of 1991 signaled the real start of the 16-bit console war. The system came bundled with Super Mario World as the pack-in game, and on launch day two additional games were available; F-Zero and Pilotwings. Many believe that Gradius III and SimCity were also launch titles, but these games were actually released the following week, just missing being part of the launch line-up.

- At around 7:07 in the video, I accidentally refer to Actraiser as "Axelay" Unfortunately, there is no way to fix this without deleting this video and re-uploading. I put an annotation in the video, but people watching on non-desktop platforms aren't going to see it.
- Production of this video began the same day that the Sega Saturn launch episode was released; December 25, 2015. This episode therefore took 7 months to complete, although I took breaks to make the History of NHL '94 and DieHard Gamefan videos.
- The footage of Uemura, the guys working at Nintendo EAD, Miyamoto in his cubicle, and Miyamoto drawing mario (during the end credits) all game from an early 90's French documentary called "Otaku". You can check it out here but it isn't in english, unfortunately: https://youtu.be/JWiAEThmnGk
- All of the gameplay footage for this episode was recoded using an RGB-modded SNES mini, as it produces a sharper image than an older "original" SNES.
- Graduis III and SimCity WERE NOT LAUNCH TITLES. I can't stress this enough times. The three games featured in this episode were the only three that were available on launch day. Period.
- This was the fifth episode covering the launch of a console.
- I had to re-record the F-Zero footage 4 times because the beta version of the Elgato software that I was using kept dropping the audio.
- I mentioned in the outro to the show that I get my box art from Matt Henzel of VideoGameObsession.com. I should have said "much of this comes from..." because he is not my only source. He has however given me permission to use any material on his site, and asked only for credit in my videos. As has always been the case, the bulk of the box art seen on this show comes from The Cover Project.
- I did not play through the complete game when recording Super Mario World footage. I have beaten the games multiple times in the past, but have received negative comments from viewers for showing too much of some games. If you haven't beaten SMW, you should do it for yourself instead of watching someone else do it.

Episode 38 - The North American launch of the Super Nintendo. Although the 16-bit generation started in the late summer of 1989 with the near-simultaneous launch of the Sega Genesis and TurboGrafx-16, the release of the Super Nintendo in August of 1991 signaled the real start of the 16-bit console war. The system came bundled with Super Mario World as the pack-in game, and on launch day two additional games were available; F-Zero and Pilotwings. Many believe that Gradius III and SimCity were also launch titles, but these games were actually released the following week, just missing being part of the launch line-up.

Show Notes:
- At around 7:07 in the video, I accidentally refer to Actraiser as "Axelay" Unfortunately, there is no way to fix this without deleting this video and re-uploading. I put an annotation in the video, but people watching on non-desktop platforms aren't going to see it.
- Production of this video began the same day that the Sega Saturn launch episode was released; December 25, 2015. This episode therefore took 7 months to complete, although I took breaks to make the History of NHL '94 and DieHard Gamefan videos.
- The footage of Uemura, the guys working at Nintendo EAD, Miyamoto in his cubicle, and Miyamoto drawing mario (during the end credits) all game from an early 90's French documentary called "Otaku". You can check it out here but it isn't in english, unfortunately: https://youtu.be/JWiAEThmnGk
- All of the gameplay footage for this episode was recoded using an RGB-modded SNES mini, as it produces a sharper image than an older "original" SNES.
- Graduis III and SimCity WERE NOT LAUNCH TITLES. I can't stress this enough times. The three games featured in this episode were the only three that were available on launch day. Period.
- This was the fifth episode covering the launch of a console.
- I had to re-record the F-Zero footage 4 times because the beta version of the Elgato software that I was using kept dropping the audio.
- I mentioned in the outro to the show that I get my box art from Matt Henzel of VideoGameObsession.com. I should have said "much of this comes from..." because he is not my only source. He has however given me permission to use any material on his site, and asked only for credit in my videos. As has always been the case, the bulk of the box art seen on this show comes from The Cover Project.
- I did not play through the complete game when recording Super Mario World footage. I have beaten the games multiple times in the past, but have received negative comments from viewers for showing too much of some games. If you haven't beaten SMW, you should do it for yourself instead of watching someone else do it.

Nintendo gave us a cool little surprise in the form of the NES Classic Edition. The mini NES that sold out immediately has 30 classic games on it that are pretty awesome. Mega Man 2, Zelda and Super Mario Bros. 3 are some of the video game staples you can play. We sincerely hope that the success of the NES Classic Edition will inspire Nintendo to do a mini version of the Super Nintendo. We have so many fond memories of that console. In case they decide to make one, here are 10 games that must be on the SNES Mini!
1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time
It’s pizza time! There’s nothing quite like kicking the ass of foot ninjas with a few of your closest friends. Unfortunately, each new attempt at a Turtles game has fallen short in recent years. That’s what makes revisiting Turtles in Time still worth it. This classic beat 'em up is short and the gameplay is pretty repetitive but that doesn’t make it any less fun to play. Turtles in Time is just such a wonderfully polished, personality-packed little piece of videogame history.
2. NBA Jam Tournament Edition
He’s on fire! Remember when sports games were all about fun? NBA Jam Tournament Edition is a '90s arcade classic that took nearly every rule of the game and threw it out the window. The cartoony, over the top style of this game is what makes it so accessible to everyone. It is just a 2-on-2 basketball game but with insanely high dunks, crazy field goal percentage and almost no rules. We also have to mention the announcers who have great lines like Razzle Dazzle!, He’s on fire! and Boomshackalacka!
3. Super Mario Kart
Nintendo got a lot of things right on the first try, and Super Mario Kart is no exception. While each new Mario Kart sequel has added features and looked better, everything that made these improvements possible can be found in the original. Conquering Super Mario Kart's single-player cup competitions was fun, but it was in split-screen multiplayer where the game really excelled.
4. Street Fighter II Turbo
Street Fighter II Turbo is an excellent showcase of why everyone fell in love with the fighting franchise in the first place. It was faster than the original console port, hence the “Turbo” in the title, which was a major selling point for fans. This version of the game also included numerous changes to character’s movesets and combos, while adding a number of new fighters to the fray. In our book Street Fighter II Turbo remains the definitive fighting game on Super Nintendo.
5. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddys Kong's Quest
The 3D esque graphics of Donkey Kong Country blew our minds back in the day and really pushed the Super Nintendo to its limits. While the original was better known for its graphics than its gameplay Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong's Quest was the complete package.
6. Contra III: The Alien Wars
Sometimes you just want to pick up a spread gun and blast everything to bits. For those times it’s good to have a copy of Contra III - The Alien Wars ready to go. This sequel fast-forwarded the action to the distant future and improved not only the aesthetics, but also the scope and storyline of the game.
7. Chrono Trigger
The Super Nintendo is home to some of the best RPGs ever made and Chrono Trigger is definitely one of them. The game was assembled by a dream team of creative talent from the Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Dragon Ball franchises. The story about time travel hooked us from the start and brought some great gameplay with it.
8. Super Metroid
Super Metroid is one of the most atmospheric games on the Super Nintendo. With hints of space-bound horror movies like Alien in its long, creeping corridors, the visuals completely sucked us in. The tense brooding music and terrifying enemy encounters scared the hell out of us.
9. Super Mario World
Super Mario World is one of the best launch titles in the history of gaming. The extra power of the Super Nintendo allowed Miyamoto to perfect his platforming ideas that started on the NES. Mario World didn’t reinvent platform gaming, but it did find a way to make it seem fresh again.

10. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is such a good game that many gamers consider it to be their favorite game of all time. Nintendo took the formula laid out in the original NES release, and transformed it into something really quite magical. Players started out in regular old Hyrule, but would soon visit a parallel Dark World.

Episode 38 - The North American launch of the Super Nintendo. Although the 16-bit generation started in the late summer of 1989 with the near-simultaneous launch of the Sega Genesis and TurboGrafx-16, the release of the Super Nintendo in August of 1991 signaled the real start of the 16-bit console war. The system came bundled with Super Mario World as the pack-in game, and on launch day two additional games were available; F-Zero and Pilotwings. Many believe that Gradius III and SimCity were also launch titles, but these games were actually released the following week, just missing being part of the launch line-up.

- At around 7:07 in the video, I accidentally refer to Actraiser as "Axelay" Unfortunately, there is no way to fix this without deleting this video and re-uploading. I put an annotation in the video, but people watching on non-desktop platforms aren't going to see it.
- Production of this video began the same day that the Sega Saturn launch episode was released; December 25, 2015. This episode therefore took 7 months to complete, although I took breaks to make the History of NHL '94 and DieHard Gamefan videos.
- The footage of Uemura, the guys working at Nintendo EAD, Miyamoto in his cubicle, and Miyamoto drawing mario (during the end credits) all game from an early 90's French documentary called "Otaku". You can check it out here but it isn't in english, unfortunately: https://youtu.be/JWiAEThmnGk
- All of the gameplay footage for this episode was recoded using an RGB-modded SNES mini, as it produces a sharper image than an older "original" SNES.
- Graduis III and SimCity WERE NOT LAUNCH TITLES. I can't stress this enough times. The three games featured in this episode were the only three that were available on launch day. Period.
- This was the fifth episode covering the launch of a console.
- I had to re-record the F-Zero footage 4 times because the beta version of the Elgato software that I was using kept dropping the audio.
- I mentioned in the outro to the show that I get my box art from Matt Henzel of VideoGameObsession.com. I should have said "much of this comes from..." because he is not my only source. He has however given me permission to use any material on his site, and asked only for credit in my videos. As has always been the case, the bulk of the box art seen on this show comes from The Cover Project.
- I did not play through the complete game when recording Super Mario World footage. I have beaten the games multiple times in the past, but have received negative comments from viewers for showing too much of some games. If you haven't beaten SMW, you should do it for yourself instead of watching someone else do it.

1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time
It’s pizza time! There’s nothing quite like kicking the ass of foot ninjas with a few of your closest friends. Unfortunately, each new attempt at a Turtles game has fallen short in recent years. That’s what makes revisiting Turtles in Time still worth it. This classic beat 'em up is short and the gameplay is pretty repetitive but that doesn’t make it any less fun to play. Turtles in Time is just such a wonderfully polished, personality-packed little piece of videogame history.
2. NBA Jam Tournament Edition
He’s on fire! Remember when sports games were all about fun? NBA Jam Tournament Edition is a '90s arcade classic that took nearly every rule of the game and threw it out the window. The cartoony, over the top style of this game is what makes it so accessible to everyone. It is just a 2-on-2 basketball game but with insanely high dunks, crazy field goal percentage and almost no rules. We also have to mention the announcers who have great lines like Razzle Dazzle!, He’s on fire! and Boomshackalacka!
3. Super Mario Kart
Nintendo got a lot of things right on the first try, and Super Mario Kart is no exception. While each new Mario Kart sequel has added features and looked better, everything that made these improvements possible can be found in the original. Conquering Super Mario Kart's single-player cup competitions was fun, but it was in split-screen multiplayer where the game really excelled.
4. Street Fighter II Turbo
Street Fighter II Turbo is an excellent showcase of why everyone fell in love with the fighting franchise in the first place. It was faster than the original console port, hence the “Turbo” in the title, which was a major selling point for fans. This version of the game also included numerous changes to character’s movesets and combos, while adding a number of new fighters to the fray. In our book Street Fighter II Turbo remains the definitive fighting game on Super Nintendo.
5. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddys Kong's Quest
The 3D esque graphics of Donkey Kong Country blew our minds back in the day and really pushed the Super Nintendo to its limits. While the original was better known for its graphics than its gameplay Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong's Quest was the complete package.
6. Contra III: The Alien Wars
Sometimes you just want to pick up a spread gun and blast everything to bits. For those times it’s good to have a copy of Contra III - The Alien Wars ready to go. This sequel fast-forwarded the action to the distant future and improved not only the aesthetics, but also the scope and storyline of the game.
7. Chrono Trigger
The Super Nintendo is home to some of the best RPGs ever made and Chrono Trigger is definitely one of them. The game was assembled by a dream team of creative talent from the Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Dragon Ball franchises. The story about time travel hooked us from the start and brought some great gameplay with it.
8. Super Metroid
Super Metroid is one of the most atmospheric games on the Super Nintendo. With hints of space-bound horror movies like Alien in its long, creeping corridors, the visuals completely sucked us in. The tense brooding music and terrifying enemy encounters scared the hell out of us.

Nintendo gave us a cool little surprise in the form of the NES Classic Edition. The mini NES that sold out immediately has 30 classic games on it that are pretty awesome. Mega Man 2, Zelda and Super Mario Bros. 3 are some of the video game staples you can play. We sincerely hope that the success of the NES Classic Edition will inspire Nintendo to do a mini version of the Super Nintendo. We have so many fond memories of that console. In case they decide to make one, here are 10 games that must be on the SNES Mini!
1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time
It’s pizza time! There’s nothing quite like kicking the ass of foot ninjas with a few of your closest friends. Unfortunately, each new attempt at a Turtles game has fallen short in recent years. That’s what makes revisiting Turtles in Time still worth it. This classic beat 'em up is short and the gameplay is pretty repetitive but that doesn’t make it any less fun to play. Turtles in Time is just such a wonderfully polished, personality-packed little piece of videogame history.
2. NBA Jam Tournament Edition
He’s on fire! Remember when sports games were all about fun? NBA Jam Tournament Edition is a '90s arcade classic that took nearly every rule of the game and threw it out the window. The cartoony, over the top style of this game is what makes it so accessible to everyone. It is just a 2-on-2 basketball game but with insanely high dunks, crazy field goal percentage and almost no rules. We also have to mention the announcers who have great lines like Razzle Dazzle!, He’s on fire! and Boomshackalacka!
3. Super Mario Kart
Nintendo got a lot of things right on the first try, and Super Mario Kart is no exception. While each new Mario Kart sequel has added features and looked better, everything that made these improvements possible can be found in the original. Conquering Super Mario Kart's single-player cup competitions was fun, but it was in split-screen multiplayer where the game really excelled.
4. Street Fighter II Turbo
Street Fighter II Turbo is an excellent showcase of why everyone fell in love with the fighting franchise in the first place. It was faster than the original console port, hence the “Turbo” in the title, which was a major selling point for fans. This version of the game also included numerous changes to character’s movesets and combos, while adding a number of new fighters to the fray. In our book Street Fighter II Turbo remains the definitive fighting game on Super Nintendo.
5. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddys Kong's Quest
The 3D esque graphics of Donkey Kong Country blew our minds back in the day and really pushed the Super Nintendo to its limits. While the original was better known for its graphics than its gameplay Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong's Quest was the complete package.
6. Contra III: The Alien Wars
Sometimes you just want to pick up a spread gun and blast everything to bits. For those times it’s good to have a copy of Contra III - The Alien Wars ready to go. This sequel fast-forwarded the action to the distant future and improved not only the aesthetics, but also the scope and storyline of the game.
7. Chrono Trigger
The Super Nintendo is home to some of the best RPGs ever made and Chrono Trigger is definitely one of them. The game was assembled by a dream team of creative talent from the Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Dragon Ball franchises. The story about time travel hooked us from the start and brought some great gameplay with it.
