Anne Meara (September 20, 1929 – May 23, 2015) was an American actress and comedian. Along with her husband, Jerry Stiller, she was one-half of a prominent 1960s comedy team, Stiller and Meara. She was also featured on stage, television, in numerous films, and later became a playwright.
During her career, Meara was nominated for four Emmy Awards and a Tony Award, and won a Writers Guild Award as a co-writer for the TV movie, The Other Woman. She was the mother of actors Amy and Ben Stiller.
Meara was born in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of parents of Irish descent, Mary (née Dempsey) and Edward Joseph Meara, a lawyer. An only child, she was raised in Rockville Centre, New York on Long Island. When Anne was 11 years old, her mother committed suicide.
When she was 18, Meara spent a year studying acting at the Dramatic Workshop at The New School in Manhattan. The following year, 1948, she began her career as an actress in summer stock.
Meara met actor-comedian Jerry Stiller in 1953 and they married the following year. Until he suggested it, she had never thought of doing comedy. "Jerry started us being a comedy team," she said. "He always thought I would be a great comedy partner." They joined the improvisational company The Compass Players (which later became The Second City), and after leaving, formed the comedy team of Stiller and Meara. In 1961 they were performing in nightclubs in New York, and by the following year were considered a "national phenomenon," said the New York Times.
Gerald Isaac "Jerry" Stiller (born June 8, 1927) is an American comedian and actor. He is perhaps best known for playing Frank Costanza on the NBC comedy series Seinfeld and Arthur Spooner on the CBS comedy series The King of Queens. He spent many years in the comedy team Stiller and Meara with his wife, Anne Meara. They are the parents of actor Ben Stiller, with whom Stiller co-starred in the films Zoolander, Heavyweights, Hot Pursuit, and The Heartbreak Kid.
The eldest of four children, Stiller was born at Unity Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Bella (née Citron; 1902–1954) and William Stiller (1896–1999), a bus driver. He is of Jewish and Polish descent. His paternal grandparents immigrated from Galicia, and his mother was born in Poland. He lived in the Williamsburg and East New York neighborhoods before his family moved to the Lower East Side, where he attended Seward Park High School.
A drama major at Syracuse University, he earned a bachelor's degree in Speech and Drama in 1950. In the 1953 Phoenix Theater production of Coriolanus (produced by John Houseman), Stiller (along with Gene Saks and Jack Klugman) formed "the best trio of Shakespearian clowns that [he] had ever seen on any stage".
Stiller and Meara (Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara) were a husband-and-wife comedy duo that was popular primarily in the 1960s and 1970s. They made frequent appearances on television variety shows such as The Ed Sullivan Show.
Stiller and Meara were among the earliest graduates of the Second City improvisational comedy troupe to become famous. When variety shows became scarce in the late 1970s, they had a syndicated short program, only five minutes long, which ran on the NBC affiliate in the Washington, D.C. market immediately after Saturday Night Live. They also did comical radio ads. During the mid-1970s Stiller and Meara made a couple of appearances together on the sitcom Rhoda. (Meara was a semi-regular during that show's third season, and Stiller appeared twice, playing her character's ex-husband.)
Anne Meara played Veronica Rooney, a cook on Archie Bunker's Place from 1979–82. She often made wisecracks and gave Archie a hard time. She insisted that Archie also hire her openly gay nephew Fred as a waiter to help him pay for law school. She was an alcoholic and privately pined to reconcile with her ex-husband, Carmine (who appeared in a few episodes and was played by Meara's real-life husband Jerry Stiller), but knew it wasn't going to happen. Meara appeared sporadically throughout the show's third season and left the show before the fourth and final year.
Anne, alternatively spelled Ann, is a form of the Latin female given name Anna. This in turn is a representation of the Hebrew Hannah, the name of the mother of the prophet Samuel. Anne is a common name in France.
It is sometimes used as a male name in the Netherlands (for example Anne de Vries). It has also been used for males in France (Anne de Montmorency) and Scotland (Lord Anne Hamilton).

In 1995, I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Anne Meara in New York concerning her first play, AFTER-PLAY. Ms. Meara was exceedingly gracious and of course hilarious. I'll never forget the discussion we had about immortality and the importance of learning and knowing comedy as an entree to great acting. No question Ms. Meara was a gifted send-up artist and had an uncanny insight into the true meaning of friendship. Featured in this half-hour are three different segments with Ms. Meara, a chat with producer Carol Ostrow, and Anne's fellow actors and friends, Merwin Goldsmith and Larry Keith. God Bless you Anne Meara for always making us laugh. "It's perhaps the most important thing in a person." - Audrey Hepburn

An After School Special about Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn and why it is wrong to censor it and other books. The book is good, but was written for a younger audience. The video covers it very closely. And, I think, Ann Meara does a superior job with her character.
Every morning when I get up
I see your face in my coffee cup
Looking back at me, looking back at me
Another morning, another day
And still I’m feeling the same old way
I’m still missing you, missing you
It should have been easy
It should have been easy
It should have been oh so easy to do
But I’m still getting over you
I keep seeing old friends of mine
They all smile and they say in time
I’ll get over you, I’ll be good as new
I guess somehow some day I will
I’ll forget you, I know, but still
It’ll take some time, it’ll take some time
It should have been easy
It should have been easy
It should have been oh so easy to do
But I’m still getting over you
It should have been easy
It should have been easy
It should have been oh so easy to do
