NAJA calls for 2017 National Native Media Awards entries

NORMAN, Okla. -- The Native American Journalists Association (NAJA) is now accepting entries for the 2017 NAJA National Native Media Awards competition, which recognizes excellence in the reporting, presentation and coverage of Indian Country. 

New categories added this year include best health coverage and best elder coverage. 

A $500 cash prize will also be awarded to the winner of the NAJA Richard LaCourse Award for Investigative Journalism. The winner of the NAJA-Medill Milestone Achievement Award will receive $5,000 from the the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. 

Entrants may reduce their entry fees by volunteering to judge another category / division. For each category judged, entrant may be forgiven one $25 entry fee. Volunteer judges may judge up to four categories (Applies to professional divisions only). Volunteers may not judge a category in which they are competing.

NAJA will accept submissions of members' and non-members work produced Jan. 1 – Dec. 31, 2016. Entries may only be submitted via link – no hard copies will be accepted. The cost is $25 per entry for professional and associate members, $15 per entry for students and $50 per entry for non-members. The deadline to submit entries and payment for all categories is May 31, 2017.

Categories are divided by membership type: professional, associate or student. Members and non-members should ensure entry in the correct category by completing the corresponding form, according to individual membership type. Non-members may enter their work in the Associate Category. All NAJA memberships will be verified prior to judging.

Winners will be notified prior to the 2017 Excellence in Journalism conference in Anaheim, CA, Sept. 7-9. The NAJA National Native Media Awards Banquet will be Saturday, Sept. 9. All award recipients may pick up their awards during the banquet or arrange for direct shipping.
