Metropolitan Police is a generic title for the municipal police force for a major metropolitan area, and it may be part of the official title of the force. They provide all general police services and tend to be headed by a chief called a Commissioner or Sheriff.
In the United States, metropolitan police agencies have often been formed through mergers between several local police agencies formerly holding jurisdiction within neighboring communities within a metropolitan area or county, such as several local police departments and possibly the county sheriff's office.
Typically, such communities have experienced recent population growth and urban sprawl, which causes the area to more closely resemble and function as one single conurbation. Under these circumstances, a single law enforcement agency with a unified command, jurisdiction and support structure comes to be seen as more appropriate and efficient.
A related concept exists in some American counties in which county sheriffs' offices contract with some (though not necessarily all) local cities or towns within their counties to provide all law enforcement services in those municipalities in lieu of a separate city or town police force.
The Metropolitan Police Service (abbreviated to MPS and widely known informally as "the Met") is the territorial police force responsible for law enforcement in Greater London, excluding the "square mile" of the City of London, which is the responsibility of the City of London Police. The Met also has significant national responsibilities, such as co-ordinating and leading on counter-terrorism matters and protection of the British Royal Family and senior figures of Her Majesty's Government.
As of October 2011, the Met employed 48,661 full-time personnel. This included 31,478 sworn police officers, 13,350 non-police staff, and 3,831 non-sworn police community support officers. This number excludes the 5,479 Special Constables, who work part-time (a minimum of 16 hours a month) and who have the same powers and uniform as their regular colleagues. This makes the Metropolitan Police the largest police force in the United Kingdom by a significant margin, and one of the biggest in the world.
An Escort Group consisted of several small warships organized and trained to operate together providing protection for trade convoys. Escort groups were a second world war tactical innovation in anti-submarine warfare by the Royal Navy to combat the threat of the Kriegsmarine's "wolfpack" tactics. Early escort groups often contained destroyers, sloops, naval trawlers and, later, corvettes of differing specifications lacking the ability to maneuver together as a flotilla of similar warships, but rigorously trained in anti-submarine tactics to use teamwork emphasizing the unique sensors, weapons, speed and turning radius of each ship. The development of these 'escort groups' proved an effective means of defending shipping convoys through the Battle of the Atlantic.
On the basis of experience during World War I, the Admiralty instituted trade convoys in United Kingdom coastal waters from September 1939. During the first year of the Battle of the Atlantic British convoy protection was the responsibility of the Western Approaches Command (WAC), based first in Plymouth, then, as the focus of the campaign moved after the 1940 Fall of France, in Liverpool. The newest and most capable destroyers were assigned to screen capital ships of the Home Fleet; so, to augment the inadequate number of purpose-designed sloops, WAC was allocated a leftover array of limited production prototypes, ships built to foreign specifications, minesweepers, militarized yachts and fishing trawlers, and survivors of elderly destroyer classes no longer considered suitable for operation with the Home Fleet. These escorts were not numerous enough or sufficiently long ranged to accompany convoys across the Atlantic, but would screen convoys to and from meeting points thought to be beyond U-boat range defining the edge of the Western Approaches.
Special Escort Group may refer to:
A police force is a constituted body of persons empowered by the state to enforce the law, protect property, and limit civil disorder. Their powers include the legitimized use of force. The term is most commonly associated with police services of a sovereign state that are authorized to exercise the police power of that state within a defined legal or territorial area of responsibility. Police forces are often defined as being separate from military or other organizations involved in the defense of the state against foreign aggressors; however, gendarmerie are military units charged with civil policing.
Law enforcement, however, constitutes only part of policing activity. Policing has included an array of activities in different situations, but the predominant ones are concerned with the preservation of order. In some societies, in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, these developed within the context of maintaining the class system and the protection of private property. Many police forces suffer from police corruption to a greater or lesser degree. The police force is usually a public sector service, meaning they are paid through taxes.

Last month we launched what is thought to be the largest rollout of body-worn cameras by police anywhere in the world. Today we are publishing a short video to illustrate how the cameras work and how they can recall a specific moment in time that can be difficult to recall in high pressure situations. The film is designed to communicate the benefits of Body Worn Video (BWV) primarily for members of the public, to improve the transparency and accountability of policing. It is a fictitious scenario filmed entirely using BWV and shot from the point of view of two officers. The film aims to demonstrate that BWV can capture vital evidence and is a useful tool in establishing the truth after the event. Over the coming months cameras will be issued to over 22,000 officers across all 32 boro...
A rare catch of a Metropolitan Police Special Escort Group Prisoner Transport Training Run consisting of 2 brand new BMW 530d's, a Mercedes Sprinter and a Range Rover, seen here responding across Lambeth Bridge and along Lambeth Road on a training run. 31st August 2016 Best Watched in HD.
This is the definitive film on the world-renowned Metropolitan Police Special Escort Group. Charged with protecting and escorting heads of state, government ministers and the Royal Family through London and the south east, the unit is one of the most secretive in Britain. Filmed from a number of vantage points across London, this 30 minute HD film places you in the seat normally occupied by the principal VIP in the motorcade, giving you a unique view of the tactics and operations used by this media-shy group. Journalist Antony Loveless, who has extensive experience in the police and defence sectors, was given unprecedented access to the SEG and accompanied them on a number of escorts to produce this film. The result is ‘Inconspicuous Ingenuity’, which includes all-new footage of the grou...

We have increased the number of armed officers on our streets to protect our Capital against the terrorism threat. The threat remains at severe. Every armed officer in the UK has volunteered to carry a firearm and they are paid no more for doing this. These men and women do this as they are committed to their duty, to keep you safe. If there is a critical incident we tell the public to "Run, Hide, Tell", but these brave officers will run towards danger as it's their job to protect you and confront the threat, whatever it may be. We are working hard to protect all communities, no matter what the threat. More armed officers out on the streets will mean we can respond more quickly to armed criminality and other serious threats. This was clearly shown last week, when firearms officers were...
This video was filmed on the 11th September 2016 at 1822 hours and shows you that in the Metropolitan Police cannot issue you with a section 35 notice without knowing your name and address. You do not have to give your name and address unless the Police have lawful grounds to require them e.g. under Section 50 of the Police Reform Act 2002. In this video Metropolitan Special Constable Mohammed Rob asked for my name and address and was told that he wouldn't be having them. He then walked away with his tail between his legs because he had no grounds to require my name and address and he knew it! I remained in the area and continued filming.
