Tropospheric Ozone Impacts
Tropospheric Ozone Impacts
In the first global assessment of the impact of ozone on climate warming, scientists at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), New York, evaluated how ozone in the lowest part of the atmosphere (the troposphere) changed temperatures over the past 100 years. Using the best available estimates of global emissions of gases that create ozone, the GISS computer model study reveals how much this single air pollutant and greenhouse gas has contributed to warming in specific regions of the world. Ozone was responsible for one-third to half of the observed warming trend in the Arctic during winter and spring, according to the new research. Ozone is transported from the industrialized countries in the Northern Hemisphere to the Arctic quite efficiently during these seasons. The findings will be published soon in the American Geophysical Union's Journal of Geophysical Research-Atmospheres. The impact of ozone air pollution on climate warming is difficult to pinpoint because, unlike other greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, ozone does not last long enough in the lower atmosphere to spread uniformly around the globe. Its warming impact is much more closely tied to the region it originated from. To capture this complex picture, the GISS scientists used a suite of three-dimensional computer models that starts with data on ozone sources and then tracks how ozone chemically evolved and moved around the world over the past century. The research was supported by NASA's Atmospheric Chemistry Modeling and Analysis Program. NASA | Taking Earth's Temperature
The Earth is a complex system with a unique climate. Many scientists are concerned that Earth's climate is changing at an unprecedented rate. Each January, scientists at NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies release temperature data for the previous year. How do scientists study how warm our home planet is, and how do they determine what factors affect its climate? This short video explores the tools NASA scientists use to take Earth's temperature. More information on this topic available at: http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/earth_temp.html Completed: 19 November 2011 Video Editor: Stefanie Misztal (UMBC) Narrator: Sarah DeWitt (NASA/GSFC) Producer: Maria Frostic (UMBC) Scientists: Michele Rienecker (NASA/GSFC) James Hansen Ph.D. (NASA/GSFC GISS) Writer: Maria Frostic (UMBC) Credit: NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center- published: 03 Dec 2013

RPE Duo Sonification Project
Footage from RPE Duo USA tour 2013. Includes collaboration with Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS). The duo transforms satellite ozone data into sound using a variety of sonification methods. The data from the lowest level of the atmosphere closest to the earth's surface is used, which has the best relationship to human health. Since Ozone's impact is all about location, RPE Duo is using the data from six locations around the globe with diverse level of ozone concentration; representing the ozone data rather than culture or any other characteristic of the locations. To represent each place average monthly ozone concentration is used in a time series of 12 months. Those interested to find out more about the impacts of ozone are recommended to read the 'Integrated Assessment of Black Carbon and Tropospheric Ozone', an international study that was co-ordinated by SEI and chaired by Dr Drew Shindell of NASA GISS. RPE Duo's work: http://rpeduo.bandcamp.com https://www.facebook.com/RPEDuo http://radek-rudnicki.net/rpeduo-tour-2013/ The report was one of the key documents that lead to the establishment of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) in 2012. Space F!ght Sci-Fi Tour 2013 teaser
Space F!ght Sci-Fi Tour 2013 dates: 8th November -- The Base, Leeds (live streaming) 10th November -- Kings Place, OutHear, London 11th November -- Leper Chapel, SHINDIG, with The Soft, Cambridge 18 November -- 3Sixty, Ron Cooke Hub, University of York, York 19th November -- 3Sixty, Ron Cooke Hub, University of York, York 20th November -- Wharf Chambers, with Shatner's Bassoon, Leeds Space Fight is going on UK tour in November. Tour is co-produced by Sound and Music. New Space F!ght's set is inspired by sci-fi novels from P.K. Dick and S. Lem. Texts used are voice samples of Anna Edgington. These are influencing the improvisation and providing structure for the new pieces. To emphasize 3D effect of the visualisations Space F!ght is using a custom made modular scenography for visualisations/3D mapping. Scenography modules are acting as projection screens made of especially designed models. During the forthcoming tour each show will also contain a piece made in collaboration with Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS). In this piece satellite ozone data controls the improvisation and 3D visualisations. Space F!ght is using ground level ozone data, which is the best representation of the ozone that harms human health. Since Ozone's impact is all about location, Space F!ght is using the data from different locations around the globe with diverse level of ozone concentration; representing the ozone data rather than culture or any other characteristic of the locations.
