Apapa is a Local Government Area in Lagos, located to the west of Lagos Island. Apapa contains a number of ports and terminals operated by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), including the major port of Lagos State and Lagos Port Complex (LPC).
In its legislation, the NPA itself does not refer to any port called "Port of Apapa", rather it refers to the "Port of Lagos", "Port of Port Harcourt" and "Port of Calabar".
The region of Apapa lies near the mouth of Lagos lagoon, and contains ports and terminals for various commodities such as containers and bulk cargo, houses, offices and a small old disused railway station (Apapa North). It is the site of a major container terminal which was owned and operated by the Federal Government of Nigeria until March 2005, and now is operated by the Danish firm A. P. Moller-Maersk Group. Adjacent to the container port is the Tin Can Island port, which has ro-ro facilities.
It also houses some refineries like the Bua Group. It also has commercial offices of many shipping, clearing and transportation companies. Other notable buildings include the Folawiyo Towers. Apapa houses the headquarters of the Nigerian newspaper Thisday.
How APM Terminals is enabling trade, creating jobs and advancing technology and know-how in Nigeria
The Port of Apapa is located in the Apapa area, in the Lagoon of Lagos, the capital of Nigeria. It is the earliest and also main port of the African country, and it also known as Port of Lagos or Lagos Port Complex. In the early 60’s Cogefar (Today part of the Salini Impregilo’s history, it was established in 1959 and merged in Impregilo in 1994) realised the second wharf extension of the port, a work assigned by Nigerian Port Authority. Construction activities included train access and links to the main motorways in the metropolitan area of Lagos and its industrial centres and were completed in 1966. Joe Ugo-Emeribe, the Chief Executive Officer, Alpha Vessels says the removal of trucks on the road and the demolition of illegal structures around the Apapa port area have improved the security of the area and enhanced business activities.
Nigeria's Acting President YemiOsinbajo launched a new standard gauge railway project linking Nigeria's largest city Lagos with Ibadan, capital of the southwestern Oyo State. Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony, Osinbajo said the project, expected to be completed by 2018, will help the country in its economic diversification process. The Lagos-Ibadan Modernization rail project, a standard gauge rail line, with extension to the Lagos Port Complex in Apapa, was awarded by the Nigerian government to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation.
The National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders on Tuesday said the Federal Government and port operators lost about N40bn to the 11-day strike which crippled Apapa Port last month.
