The President of the French Republic (French: Président de la République française, French pronunciation: [pʁezidɑ̃ də la ʁepyblik fʁɑ̃sɛz]), is the executive head of state of the French Fifth Republic. The powers, functions and duties of prior presidential offices, and their relation with the first minister and cabinets has over time differed with the various French constitutions.
The President of France is also the ex officio Co-Prince of Andorra, Grand Master of the Légion d'honneur and the Ordre national du Mérite and honorary proto-canon of the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome.
The current President of France is François Hollande, who took office on 15 May 2012.
Since the Referendum on the Direct Election of the President of the French Republic in 1962, the President has been directly elected by universal suffrage; he or she was previously elected by an electoral college.
After the Referendum on the Reduction of the Mandate of the President of the French Republic, 2000, the length of the term was reduced from seven to five years; the first election to a shorter term was held in 2002. President Chirac was first elected in 1995 and again in 2002. At that time, there was no limit on the number of terms, so Chirac could have run again, but chose not to. He was succeeded by Nicolas Sarkozy on 16 May 2007.
Emmanuel Macron (born 21 December 1977 in Amiens) is a French senior official, politician and former investment banker. On 26 August 2014 he was appointed as the Minister of Economy, Industry and Digital Affairs in the Second Valls Government.
Macron is the son of Jean-Michel Macron, Professor of Neurology at the University of Picardy, and Françoise Macron-Noguès, MD. He was close to his grandmother, a school headmistress who had grown up in an illiterate household, and lived with her for some time. He studied piano for ten years.
He was educated for some years at the Jesuit-founded lycée La Providence in Amiens before he continued at the élite high school Lycée Henri-IV in Paris. He studied Philosophy at the University of Paris-Ouest Nanterre La Défense, obtaining a DEA degree. He worked as an assistant for Paul Ricoeur between 1999 and 2001 where he helped edit Ricoeur's book La Mémoire, l'histoire, l'oubli. He also obtained a degree in Public Affairs at Sciences Po, before training for a senior civil service career at the École nationale d'administration (ENA), graduating in 2004.

French President Emmanuel Macron delivered a stinging rebuke to US President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw the US from the Paris Agreement on climate change on June 1. Following is a transcript of the video. Today the president of the United States, Donald Trump, announced his decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris agreement. I do respect his decision, but I do think it is an actual mistake both the US and for our planet. I just said to President Trump in a few words, a few minutes ago, this assessment: Tonight I wish to tell the United States – France believes in you, the world believes in you. I know that you are a great nation. I know your history – our common history. To all scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, responsible citizens who were disappointed by the d...

If Emmanuel Macron defeats far-right candidate Marine Le Pen in the 2017 French presidential election, the country will have its most unexpected first lady, Brigitte Trogneux, who is 25 years his senior.
The new French president-elect was little known abroad until recently, having never before been elected to public office. Born in 1977, the former investment banker is backed by a new political movement, En Marche! (On the Move), that he set up just a year ago. A former member of outgoing President Hollande’s Socialist party, he has been compared to Tony Blair. But what else do we know about him?
