The Philippines (i/ˈfɪlᵻpiːnz/; Filipino: Pilipinas [ˌpɪlɪˈpinɐs]), officially known as the Republic of the Philippines (Filipino: Republika ng Pilipinas), is a sovereign island country in Southeast Asia situated in the western Pacific Ocean. It consists of about 7,500 islands that are categorized broadly under three main geographical divisions: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The capital city of the Philippines is Manila and the most populous city is Quezon City; both are part of Metro Manila.
To the north of the Philippines across the Luzon Strait lies Taiwan; Vietnam sits west across the South China Sea; southwest lies Malaysia in the island of Borneo across the Sulu Sea, and to the south the Celebes Sea separates it from other islands of Indonesia; while to the east it is bounded by the Philippine Sea and the island-nation of Palau. Its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire and close to the equator makes the Philippines prone to earthquakes and typhoons, but also endows it with abundant natural resources and some of the world's greatest biodiversity. At approximately 300,000 square kilometers (115,831 sq mi), the Philippines is the 72nd-largest country in the world.

Pacquiao, who will face Juan Manuel Marquez on Nov. 12, appeared a no-show at the start until he came in early in the fourth quarter of the dream Smart Ultimate All-Star Weekend game pitting a stellar NBA cast and Smart Gilas Pilipinas at the jampacked Araneta Coliseum. As Pacquiao walked the sideline to sit beside Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas chief Manny Pangilinan, whose MVP Sports Foundation made this once-in-a-lifetime experience happen, the frantic crowd greeted him with chants of "Manny! Paul Pfeiffer was born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1966, but spent most of his childhood in the Philippines. Pfeiffer relocated to New York in 1990, where he attended Hunter College and the Whitney Independent Study Program. Pfeiffer’s groundbreaking work in video, sculpture, and photography uses recent computer technologies to dissect the role that mass media plays in shaping consciousness. In a series of video works focused on professional sports events—including basketball, boxing, and hockey—Pfeiffer digitally removes the bodies of the players from the games, shifting the viewer’s focus to the spectators, sports equipment, or trophies won. Presented on small LCD screens and often looped, these intimate and idealized video works are meditations on faith, desire, and a contemporary culture ob...

Duterte has expressed his desire to build on the stellar accomplishments of the administration of outgoing president Benigno Aquino III, particularly the latter’s good governance initiatives and critical structural reforms that transformed the Philippines from being “the sick man of Asia” into “Asia’s rising tiger.” Of his ten-point socioeconomic agenda revealed on Monday, June 20, for example, his first point was to continue and maintain current macroeconomic policies, including fiscal, monetary and trade policies. However, he intends to depart from Aquino’s legacy of instituting slow but steady macroeconomic reform by advancing an economic agenda which seeks to upgrade, accelerate as well as expand the government’s basic services that shall render the country’s macroeconomic environment...

TV Patrol is the primetime newscast of ABS-CBN, the largest network in the Philippines. We were commissioned by the News & Current Affairs Department to create the OBB. KABABALAGHAN (Wonder) is a current affairs special that deals with the supernatural phenomena in the Pinoy societal context. It aired last year, October 2011, and featured a host of ghost stories & other unexplainable events that allegedly happened in and around the provinces in the Philippines. Since the budget was tight and the time was limited, we were asked to create a show opener using the re-enactment footages that were already shot for the docu itself. However, we also wanted to create new, iconic visuals to complement the footages, so we actually pulled archival footage that we have from other (personal) projects in order to make this happen. We handled the design & animation of the frames, the calligraphic embellishments, including the editing of the re-enactment videos, in orde...

Show opener for a documentary on the 25th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution. Main objective of the documentary is to relay the ideals of the original revolution to the younger generation, whom most likely weren't even born at the time of the event. Instead of doing our usual style for a show open, the studio brainstormed and Pauline had this wonderful idea to execute it as part OBB, part advocacy, wherein we shot ourselves handing out EDSA 25 flyers to kids and students. Drawing from John Nye’s talk on elites and reform, Noel Maurer, associate professor of Harvard Business School, talks about a time in our history when dominant interests found it beneficial to allow reforms in the country. In the early 20th century, American conservative elites wanted to keep the Philippines after defeating Spain but ran into strong popular opposition from the Democrats. Maurer explains how the elites changed the public’s opinion by convincing them that American rule would be beneficial to Filipinos. He talks about the different reforms that William Taft and other American policy makers passed in relation to property rights. It was believed that this would radically improve the material conditions of Filipinos. Unfortunately this largely failed. Maurer discusses the reas...

Tinnikling is considered the national folk dance with a pair of dancers hopping between two bamboo poles held just above the ground and struck together in time to music. Originated from Leyte Province, this dance is in fact a mimic movement of “tikling birds” hopping over trees, grass stems or over bamboo traps set by farmers. Dancers perform this dance with remarkable grace and speed jumping between bamboo poles. In Tagalog this dance is called as Sayaw Sa Kawayan. Tinikling (means tikling-like) is the official Philippine National Dance according to the Philippine Information Agency (PIA.gov.ph). It is the most popular Philippine folk dance abroad. The tinikling has been included in the folk dance curricula of many countries around the world. In fact, there is one tinikling-like dance i...

In the Philippines we meet Emma. She is not a doctor, but a Community Health Worker. We witness how she, together with her colleagues, helps her neighbors and organizes them for the right to health. Three weeks before the trip my friend called me up and asked if I wanted to go to the Philippines on a Surf trip. He said "It's cheap as chips mate We will spend less there then we will at home" and I was sold. I checked the dairy and had nothing on so I thought why not. There are many surf spots to go in the Philippines but they are becoming incredible popular due to the high quality of waves and as I stated earlier, cheap Island life. So we picked Baler, a lesser known spot where we were hoping for less crowds. Baler delivered. Not only were we among the few few foreigners but the lineups were generally small and in some spots we were the only ones there. The locals there were super friendly and happy to show us around to the best spots and give us pointers along the way. Being only a ...
The World Before Me is a modern-day round the world trip, set to the words of a 19th century poet. “Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road, healthy, free, the world before me.” 160 years have passed since Walt Whitman penned this text, but feelings about travel remain the same. We’re still inspired by the open road and still excited by discovering the unknown. In the fall of 2015, while preparing for a trip that would take me literally around the world, I couldn't shake the desire to share the experience of travel, which for me is a very personal one. This film is the culmination of that desire. I carried my camera for 5 months through 15 countries. The endless metropolis of Tokyo, tiny islands of The Philippines, busy streets of India, the Swiss Alps and the Scottish Highland...

One of the best Filipino food meals you can eat in Manila! ►Subscribe to my channel for more food videos: http://bit.ly/MarkWiensSubscribe Aling Sosing's is often considered to be one of the best carinderias, or local Filipino food restaurants, in all of Manila. The crowd that shows up to eat lunch here everyday reinforces the fact that they are no doubt one of the spots you want to be in Manila, if you’re a food lovers. When I was eating in Manila, eating at Aling Sosing's was certainly among the best local Filipino food restaurants that I tried. Aling Sosing's is a very typical type of local street food restaurant, sitting on the corner of a street, near to Makati. Just like most carinderias, all the food is prepared ahead of time, and sits at the front of the restaurant. When you arri...
Rodrigo Duterte is declaring war on smoking. Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian, and Amberia Allen, the hosts of The Young Turks, tell you why this could be a huge disaster. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. https://tytnetwork.com/join/ “After declaring a war on drugs, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has now turned his wrath on smokers, passing a sweeping decree to ban public smoking and urging his citizens to help local authorities apprehend offenders. His executive order, signed this week, and announced on Thursday, outlaws the use of tobacco and electronic cigarettes, in all public spaces, including pavements. Designated smoking areas must not be within 10m of air ducts, entrances or exits, and are barred in schools, hospitals, clinics, food preparation areas and near ...

An island hopping adventure in the Philippines. Sun-drenched coconut palms gently swaying in the breeze, pristine beaches with hardly a soul in sight, the bluest of blue water lapping at your feet, and the friendliest locals you'll ever meet. I was one of four filmmakers sent to the Philippines by STA Travel as part of the Reel Philippines project. I took on the theme of Island Hopping where I had to give a travellers experience of Island Hopping in the Philippines. It really is a beautiful place to explore. The people on the islands live such a simple life, yet are so happy with what they have. It was an eye opening and humbling experience and I would love to go back sometime. Pristine beaches, turquoise waters, breathtaking paradise landscapes, all make the Philippines simply unforgettable. Incredibly deep culture and traditions, amazing food, and the warmest people you'll ever meet, are the reasons you're gonna want to come back. Strolling around Manila or Cebu city, living in some remote North Luzon villages, travelling across Leyte and Samar, was as intense as laying on some secluded heavenly beach in Palawan, as chasing waterfalls in Mindanao, as climbing volcanoes in Mindoro and Albay.
