Howard Smith Wharves development plans at Story Bridge revealed

Show comments

The final design for the Howard Smith Wharves development has been revealed after development approval plans were received by the Brisbane City Council.

The design features a 164-room hotel under the Story Bridge that would be built to resemble the cliff face behind it.

"Integral to its design was the idea that the building blends in with the backdrop – the cliff," Victorian-based SJB Architects said in its lodged documentation.

"This approach encouraged a design that allowed the heritage buildings along with waterfront to be uncompromised and clearly distinguishable.

"The hotel building takes great reference from the faceted and fragmented nature of the cliff, whilst also picking up on the characteristic red and sandy, earthy tones."

The other major new building would be the events hall, at the New Farm end of the site, which was designed by Brisbane firm Woods Bagot.

It described the events hall as a "truly flexible space that offers Brisbane a unique opportunity on the river edge".

"Designed for multiple uses, this place is conceived as a public platform for events that contribute to the public realm of the entire site and the city beyond," Woods Bagot said.

"(It was) designed to be transparent with openable glass walls to enable views through the building to the cliff face."

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk, when announcing the project's successful tender last year, said the site would be 80 per cent parkland and public space.

"The hotel development will be designed to blend into the cliff face to ensure the iconic Story Bridge is kept as the main focus of the world-class view from the city," he said.

"The majority of the hotel will be only three storeys in height and natural colours and textures will be used for the façade to ensure the structure blends into its surroundings.

"It's also important to note the ground floor of the hotel and retail development has been designed to be above the flood level of a one-in-100-year flood event.

"The state-of-the-art 1500 square metre exhibition space will open up opportunities to host exciting events such as cultural and food festivals, food and retail markets, weddings, conferences and pop-up retail spaces."

The plans are available on the council's website and public submissions have been invited.
