The European Union (EU) comprises 28 member states. Each member state is party to the founding treaties of the union and thereby subject to the privileges and obligations of membership. Unlike members of most international organisations, the member states of the EU are subjected to binding laws in exchange for representation within the common legislative and judicial institutions. Member states must agree unanimously for the EU to adopt policies concerning defence and foreign affairs.Subsidiarity is a founding principle of the EU.
In 1957 six core states founded the EU's predecessor, the European Economic Community. The remaining states have acceded in subsequent enlargements. On 1 July 2013 Croatia became the newest member state of the EU. In order to accede, a state must fulfill the economic and political requirements known as the Copenhagen criteria, which require a candidate to have a democratic, free market government together with the corresponding freedoms and institutions, and respect for the rule of law. Enlargement of the Union is also contingent upon the consent of all existing members and the candidate's adoption of the existing body of EU law, known as the Acquis communautaire.
A member state is a state that is a member of an international organization or of a federation or confederation.
The World Trade Organization (WTO) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) include some members that are not sovereign states; thus, neither organization ever speaks of "members states"; the WTO has simply "members" WTO members, whereas the IMF calls its members "member countries".
The European Union (EU) is a politico-economic union of 28 member states that are located primarily in Europe. It covers an area of 4,324,782 km2, with an estimated population of over 508 million. The EU operates through a system of supranational institutions and intergovernmental-negotiated decisions by the member states. The institutions are: the European Parliament, the European Council, the Council of the European Union, the European Commission, the Court of Justice of the European Union, the European Central Bank, and the Court of Auditors. The European Parliament is elected every five years by EU citizens.
The EU has developed an internal single market through a standardised system of laws that apply in all member states. Within the Schengen Area, passport controls have been abolished. EU policies aim to ensure the free movement of people, goods, services, and capital, enact legislation in justice and home affairs, and maintain common policies on trade, agriculture, fisheries, and regional development. The monetary union was established in 1999 and came into full force in 2002. It is currently composed of 19 member states that use the euro as their legal tender.

David Davis explained it's Britain is different to other member states.

The UK has voted to leave the EU, and it's a major blow to the European Union system. The UK is not the only country that has had a problem with the European Union. Denmark and Sweden are EU member countries but like the UK, they refused to adopt the Euro. Switzerland is not part of the European Union and has kept its access to the Union's single market. The European Union has seen increasing political and economic integration among member states since its official establishment in 1993, after the Maastricht Treaty came into force. But tough problems remained unresolved. Such solo summits are never going to work or improve any trade or bring foreign investments unless and until you first completely eliminate terrorism and extremism from Pakistan seriously. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has called for greater collaboration between members of the Economic Cooperation Organisation (ECO) with the aim to turn the region into "a model of peace, progress and prosperity", Radio Pakistan reported. Addressing the 13th ECO Summit 2017 in Islamabad on Wednesday after assuming its chairmanship, PM Sharif said the Islamabad Declaration would reflect the consensus and resolve of ECO member states to collectively take on contemporary economic challenges. ALL European Union countries ANTHEMS(Instrumental) + photos (Sorted by join EU year)/. The European Union is a unique economic and political union between 28 European countries that together cover much of the continent. The EU was created in the aftermath of the Second World War. The first steps were to foster economic cooperation: the idea being that countries that trade with one another become economically interdependent and so more likely to avoid conflict. The result was the European Economic Community (EEC), created in 1958, and initially increasing economic cooperation between six countries: Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Since then, a huge single market has been created and continues to develop towards its full potential. From economic to politic...
