Eating your heart out is the title of the work that represented Portugal at the 26th São Paulo Biennial, a work created by the sculptor Rui Chafes and the dancer/choreographer Vera Mantero.
The commissioner of the Portuguese representation was the critic Alexander Melo.
The Biennial of Visual Arts of 2004, in its 26th edition, commissariated by Alfons Hug had as subject 'Free Territory' associate to the ideia of 'nobody’s land', understood not only in a geographic perspective, politic or social but, mainly, as aesthetic field where the art defies the limits of the reality.
Eating your heart out is the title of the work representing Portugal at the 26th São Paulo Biennial. This unique, unseen piece, especially produced for this specific occasion, space and location, was co-devised and created by sculptor Rui Chafes and dancer/choreographer Vera Mantero.
A body that leaves the floor behind, a body that does not need the floor, is one of dance's greatest utopias. A sculpture that exists in the air, like a voice or a silence, is one of the utopias of sculpture.
The first investment of Eating your heart out is the abandonment of the floor, the vertigo of ascension, underlined by its placement within the Biennial's building, a space where a large ramp spirals, connecting the various floors, enabling the viewer to observe the piece from different heights.
The structures designed by Rui Chafes comprise two spheres in black iron that are open at the bottom, where some sort of seats hang. Each sphere is supported by three large, six-meter high, tubular legs in black iron at an oblique angle to the floor. The two structures are connected by a narrow corridor.
The first references that arise suggest observation posts, towers, lighthouses. Places that rise above ground level to enable the conquest of distance, perspective, farther sight and orientation to continue the journey; a feeling of detachment and ascension.
This idea of ascension associates with dreams of flight and voyage.
By embracing the idea of flight, images of nests and hot-air balloons can be conjured.
The contradiction between the evocation of lightness and the evidence of industrial weight, the proletarian nature of the material used and the method of construction, with the seams and the nuts and bolts clearly visible, gains further meaning. As if a factory chimney was not that different from a tree. A labyrinth of metal pipes could be a marvellous forest. We could invent a metallurgy of dreams.
We advance in this description of the work, and still nothing has happened. A structure that serves as an observation post, a supporting point, an instrument for something, but what is the reason behind this, in other words, what will happen?
The event of Eating your heart out is the body of Vera Mantero, drawn, installed, choreographed, seen, alive, and hanging from one of the spheres. This is the body that brings meaning to everything. The body is the happening by which all things happen. The miraculous body of Vera Mantero frees itself from the floor, animated by drawings that redesign it, and continues the search for its place, an extraordinary place, out of the reach of all convenient circumstances. Iron sculpture and living body. A choreography without ground, for a human being and iron and the world surrounding them.
We mentioned one body and two spheres linked by a corridor: one and two, two for one, one for two. One is left over or one is missing. Let us speak of the second investment in Eating your heart out: the evocation of the double. Acknowledging that all sculptures, or all of Rui Chafes's sculptures, seek a body, and that Vera Mantero has brought them a body, this does not mean that all has ended well and that sculpture and body, together, will live happily ever after. This encounter, as all do, implies a doubled fold. The completeness of the place suggested by the perfection of this encounter points to what is left behind, the inevitable rest of the encounter. The emptiness left beside, claiming for another body; this demand re-launches the awareness of the limits of the found body and the boundaries of our own body. The other side is missing. A body is still missing. We still can't reach the other side. Some people speak of the problems of communication. This is what we have: that which is missing, the missing body.
Bodies and works of art are little, but they are all we have. We are therefore left to Eating your heart out.

How do we tell the story of a life? What cruel reduction of an image will stand (in the obituary, the family photo album, the memory of friends) for the years between a grave and a difficult birth? Public Lighting examines the current media obsession with biography, offering up "the six different kinds of personality" (the obsessive, the narcissist…) as case studies and miniatures, possible examples.

“Prolific Canadian experimental filmmaker Mike Hoolboom's Public Lighting surpasses even the beauty of his most recent work, Imitations of Life. Visually dense and hypnotic while brimming with the kind of penetrating ideas one associates with Godard, Public Lighting ponders the ways in which seeing and hearing affect human consciousness. While avant-garde fans will file it as essential viewing, the loveliness of this concise rumination should draw a wider audience in its current fest tour and through video distribution.
Divided into seven chapters, pic opens on a light spectrum as a symbol for pic's range of views, launched by an introductory chapter with Hoolboom's alter-ego, a female author (voiced by Esma Mouhktar) explaining that in the following six chapters, she will tell of six kinds of sadness fitting six personality types all under the umbrella title of Public Lighting.
In the City recalls early Peter Greenaway in its ironic storytelling wherein a male voice (Ken Thompson) describes his breakups with each of his boyfriends, paired to a gorgeous montage of restaurants and city scenes.
The Greenaway touch spills over slightly to Glass, in which Hoolboom honors composer Philip Glass with a fantastically limpid tone poem of images and selected fragments from some of Glass' better-known pieces, capped with a suitably spare scene of Glass alone at his piano.
Hoolboom has long taken found footage and made it his own, and he amusingly does this with Hey Madonna, which includes bits from Truth or Dare (including Warren Beatty grilling the diva on why she allows herself to be filmed at all times) and videos like Vogue. What turns the images upside down is how they're presented in the context of an apparently fictitious letter written by a gay man dying from AIDS, who claims to have slept with Madonna, and ponders sadly how the superstar is starting to show her age.
Next two chapters (Tradition, Hiro) are about image-makers with roots in Asia — one, a North American lenser of Chinese parentage who's cajoled to return to the home country and ponders if her life isn't unfolding in some sort of strange loop; the other is a brilliantly edited, highly impressionistic segment on Japanese photographer Hiro Kanagawa as he looks for nighttime subjects and stumbles across a corpse.
Finale, Amy, is narrated by a model (Liisa Repo-Martell) who's painfully uncomfortable with her own body and "old woman's" face. Astonishing closing image is a tightly composed telephoto shot on the start of a marathon race among young schoolgirls, dashing toward and then across the screen in ultra-slo-mo, and accompanied by a girls' chorus hauntingly singing Brian Wilson's God Only Knows. Widely eclectic lensing and looks in various media and in color and black-and-white flow nicely from one section to the next, aided by gifted editor Mark Karbusicky.” (Robert Koehler, Variety)
"Mike Hoolboom puts together some disparate clips, some beautiful images and hesitant shots from family, fiction, reality archive and advertising films (the Japanese advertisement for an all-purpose cleaning fabric is hilarious). Some images have been found or borrowed while others are original and have been shot for the purposes of the film. In the images there are also words, uttered in short sentences, and the voices of men and women. But this is only half the story. The filmmaker uses a dual approach to images and sounds to construct his unique universe. On the one hand, he gives them depth by slowdown effects, fade-ins and fade-outs, solarization, intermingling of visuals and sound in a complex dramatization relationship. Public Lighting thus consists of strong images that show us the ages of history, its moments of grandeur and shame, touching on the public and private spheres, mingling show-biz and intimacy. An image in a Hoolboom film is always multiple, a confusing palimpsest that is embedded at a certain point in a different image, a pagan icon that keeps trace of the movement of a body, the expression of a face, the inflection of a voice. On the other hand, although this magnificently impure film is based on a very elaborate editing rhetoric, its profound movement leads to uninterrupted mediation.

Plot
14-year-old Melinda Sordino (Kristen Stewart) starts out her freshman year in high school struggling on the first day. She doesn't have any friends to hang out with, and appears awkward and uncomfortable when speaking to others. Throughout the day, she is pointed at by many students and is repeatedly called a "squealer". A series of flashbacks reveal that she called the police when at a house party during the previous summer. Her real reason for calling 9-1-1 was that she was raped at the party by a senior student, Andy Evans (Eric Lively), but while on the phone, she was unable to talk to the police about what happened, and when the police arrived, she did not report the rape. The party was crashed, causing mayhem and everyone to flee from the police.

The young adolescent Melinda Sordino arrives at high school feeling confused, depressed and alone. Her school peers call her "squealer", because she alerted the police during a summer party after she was sexually assaulted by Andy Evans. She refuses to tell anyone the events that took place. Her depression and distance from people is made worse by the increasingly large gap between her and her parents. She finds great support with her art teacher Mr. Freeman and her school friend David Petrakis. Her feelings threaten to engulf her but Melinda learns to grow from her experiences instead of repressing the past emotions that have scarred her for the rest of her life.

Eating your heart out is the title of the work that represented Portugal at the 26th São Paulo Biennial, a work created by the sculptor Rui Chafes and the dancer/choreographer Vera Mantero.
The commissioner of the Portuguese representation was the critic Alexander Melo.
The Biennial of Visual Arts of 2004, in its 26th edition, commissariated by Alfons Hug had as subject 'Free Territory' associate to the ideia of 'nobody’s land', understood not only in a geographic perspective, politic or social but, mainly, as aesthetic field where the art defies the limits of the reality.
Eating your heart out is the title of the work representing Portugal at the 26th São Paulo Biennial. This unique, unseen piece, especially produced for this specific occasion, space and location, was co-devised and created by sculptor Rui Chafes and dancer/choreographer Vera Mantero.
A body that leaves the floor behind, a body that does not need the floor, is one of dance's greatest utopias. A sculpture that exists in the air, like a voice or a silence, is one of the utopias of sculpture.
The first investment of Eating your heart out is the abandonment of the floor, the vertigo of ascension, underlined by its placement within the Biennial's building, a space where a large ramp spirals, connecting the various floors, enabling the viewer to observe the piece from different heights.
The structures designed by Rui Chafes comprise two spheres in black iron that are open at the bottom, where some sort of seats hang. Each sphere is supported by three large, six-meter high, tubular legs in black iron at an oblique angle to the floor. The two structures are connected by a narrow corridor.
The first references that arise suggest observation posts, towers, lighthouses. Places that rise above ground level to enable the conquest of distance, perspective, farther sight and orientation to continue the journey; a feeling of detachment and ascension.
This idea of ascension associates with dreams of flight and voyage.
By embracing the idea of flight, images of nests and hot-air balloons can be conjured.
The contradiction between the evocation of lightness and the evidence of industrial weight, the proletarian nature of the material used and the method of construction, with the seams and the nuts and bolts clearly visible, gains further meaning. As if a factory chimney was not that different from a tree. A labyrinth of metal pipes could be a marvellous forest. We could invent a metallurgy of dreams.
We advance in this description of the work, and still nothing has happened. A structure that serves as an observation post, a supporting point, an instrument for something, but what is the reason behind this, in other words, what will happen?
The event of Eating your heart out is the body of Vera Mantero, drawn, installed, choreographed, seen, alive, and hanging from one of the spheres. This is the body that brings meaning to everything. The body is the happening by which all things happen. The miraculous body of Vera Mantero frees itself from the floor, animated by drawings that redesign it, and continues the search for its place, an extraordinary place, out of the reach of all convenient circumstances. Iron sculpture and living body. A choreography without ground, for a human being and iron and the world surrounding them.
We mentioned one body and two spheres linked by a corridor: one and two, two for one, one for two. One is left over or one is missing. Let us speak of the second investment in Eating your heart out: the evocation of the double. Acknowledging that all sculptures, or all of Rui Chafes's sculptures, seek a body, and that Vera Mantero has brought them a body, this does not mean that all has ended well and that sculpture and body, together, will live happily ever after. This encounter, as all do, implies a doubled fold. The completeness of the place suggested by the perfection of this encounter points to what is left behind, the inevitable rest of the encounter. The emptiness left beside, claiming for another body; this demand re-launches the awareness of the limits of the found body and the boundaries of our own body. The other side is missing. A body is still missing. We still can't reach the other side. Some people speak of the problems of communication. This is what we have: that which is missing, the missing body.
Bodies and works of art are little, but they are all we have. We are therefore left to Eating your heart out.

How do we tell the story of a life? What cruel reduction of an image will stand (in the obituary, the family photo album, the memory of friends) for the years between a grave and a difficult birth? Public Lighting examines the current media obsession with biography, offering up "the six different kinds of personality" (the obsessive, the narcissist…) as case studies and miniatures, possible examples.

“Prolific Canadian experimental filmmaker Mike Hoolboom's Public Lighting surpasses even the beauty of his most recent work, Imitations of Life. Visually dense and hypnotic while brimming with the kind of penetrating ideas one associates with Godard, Public Lighting ponders the ways in which seeing and hearing affect human consciousness. While avant-garde fans will file it as essential viewing, the loveliness of this concise rumination should draw a wider audience in its current fest tour and through video distribution.
Divided into seven chapters, pic opens on a light spectrum as a symbol for pic's range of views, launched by an introductory chapter with Hoolboom's alter-ego, a female author (voiced by Esma Mouhktar) explaining that in the following six chapters, she will tell of six kinds of sadness fitting six personality types all under the umbrella title of Public Lighting.
In the City recalls early Peter Greenaway in its ironic storytelling wherein a male voice (Ken Thompson) describes his breakups with each of his boyfriends, paired to a gorgeous montage of restaurants and city scenes.
The Greenaway touch spills over slightly to Glass, in which Hoolboom honors composer Philip Glass with a fantastically limpid tone poem of images and selected fragments from some of Glass' better-known pieces, capped with a suitably spare scene of Glass alone at his piano.
Hoolboom has long taken found footage and made it his own, and he amusingly does this with Hey Madonna, which includes bits from Truth or Dare (including Warren Beatty grilling the diva on why she allows herself to be filmed at all times) and videos like Vogue. What turns the images upside down is how they're presented in the context of an apparently fictitious letter written by a gay man dying from AIDS, who claims to have slept with Madonna, and ponders sadly how the superstar is starting to show her age.
Next two chapters (Tradition, Hiro) are about image-makers with roots in Asia — one, a North American lenser of Chinese parentage who's cajoled to return to the home country and ponders if her life isn't unfolding in some sort of strange loop; the other is a brilliantly edited, highly impressionistic segment on Japanese photographer Hiro Kanagawa as he looks for nighttime subjects and stumbles across a corpse.
Finale, Amy, is narrated by a model (Liisa Repo-Martell) who's painfully uncomfortable with her own body and "old woman's" face. Astonishing closing image is a tightly composed telephoto shot on the start of a marathon race among young schoolgirls, dashing toward and then across the screen in ultra-slo-mo, and accompanied by a girls' chorus hauntingly singing Brian Wilson's God Only Knows. Widely eclectic lensing and looks in various media and in color and black-and-white flow nicely from one section to the next, aided by gifted editor Mark Karbusicky.” (Robert Koehler, Variety)

Some images have been found or borrowed while others are original and have been shot for the purposes of the film. In the images there are also words, uttered in short sentences, and the voices of men and women. But this is only half the story. The filmmaker uses a dual approach to images and sounds to construct his unique universe. On the one hand, he gives them depth by slowdown effects, fade-ins and fade-outs, solarization, intermingling of visuals and sound in a complex dramatization relationship. Public Lighting thus consists of strong images that show us the ages of history, its moments of grandeur and shame, touching on the public and private spheres, mingling show-biz and intimacy. An image in a Hoolboom film is always multiple, a confusing palimpsest that is embedded at a certain point in a different image, a pagan icon that keeps trace of the movement of a body, the expression of a face, the inflection of a voice. On the other hand, although this magnificently impure film is based on a very elaborate editing rhetoric, its profound movement leads to uninterrupted mediation.

Breaking The Silence (BtS) (Hebrew: שוברים שתיקה Shovrim Shtika) is an Israeli Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) established by Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers and veterans who collect and provide testimonies about their military service in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem during the Second Intifada, giving serving and discharged Israeli personnel and reservists a platform to confidentially describe their experience in the Israeli-occupied territories.
The organization's stated mission is to 'break the silence' of IDF soldiers who return to civilian life in Israel and "discover the gap between the reality which they encountered in the [occupied] territories, and the silence which they encounter at home." Since 2004, Breaking the Silence have run a testimonies collection project called "Soldiers Speak Out" They have collected several hundred testimonies from "those who have, during their service in the IDF, the Border Guard, and the Security Forces, played a role in the Occupied Territories." Reflecting the political concerns of the indigenous Zapatista movement, the video combines images of domesticity with testimonials and agitprop folk music. The women, many of whom are masked in affiliation with the EZLN movement, discuss different aspects of gender politics.
Biography: The Chiapas Media Project/Promedios is an award wining, bi-national partnership that provides video equipment, computers and training enabling marginalized indigenous communities in Southern Mexico to create their own media. Since 1998, its instructors have worked in close collaboration with autonomous Zapatista communities. Indigenous youth with little formal education, and often working without reliable electricity, have produced videos on issues concerning them.

In CAMOUFLAGE - LOOK like them - TALK like them, 2002-2004, the story of X is told by a narrator, which is the filmmaker himself: Jun Yang. After moving from China to Vienna, after troubles with the police and being arrested, living in constant fear and threat, X is advised to dive into the mass by looking and dressing like the majority does – by camouflaging himself. With this, X turns into a representative of a person who has “no country, no name, no identity”, and who is recommended, in order to survive, to fully adapt to his surrounding: “look like them, talk like them, be like them”. Images taken from newspapers, magazines and New York street scenes, which are only indirectly connected with X, accompany the voice-over and link X´s story with news coverage addressing suspicion and paranoiac feelings about people who look different. The audio narration starts with Yang´s experiences and moves on to the life of X, whereas the visual narration opens to the social discomfort provoked by nine-eleven widely pictured in mass media since then. The shift from Yang to X and to highly political debates about otherness, from individual experience to a general debate (and back) marks an important difference to the earlier works of Jun Yang, which prioritised his own biography as pivot. Wie lange haben Sie vor zu bleiben?” This is routine, they check – to see whether I speak the language – according to my passport. I got used to it already… - quite normal - quite routine. I just arrived here a few days ago, a place, an atmosphere of paranoia or at least hyper sensitivity. Everybody becomes suspicious, everybody beyond the given standard, or because everybody fitting into a certain standard, a certain image. Like in the airplane coming here, reading an article, an interview with a spokesman of the Muslim community, a lot of their members now cut their beard, women refraining from wearing head-scarf; all to make their lives easier, to avoid being stared at or being suspicious. Daily the news reports similar cases: people arrested, innocents accused and insulted, a plane diverted or an Indian actress taken into detention, she and a group of friends looked suspicious, the airplane gets escorted by two jets, the group of Indians are taken into questioning.
Spiegel Magazine September 2002: “All citizens under suspicion.” German interior minister is thinking of new system registering all foreigners.
This is short story on X. In fact his real name started with an X. But in this case – X becomes the synonym for many in his situation. X came the other day saying:
