Designed by British graphic designer Gerald Holtom in 1958, its original purpose was to protest the use of nuclear weapons. Later, Holtom revealed that he had also been very depressed at this period in his life, and that the peace sign was a stylized stick figure of himself with head down and arms outstretched.
