Steinway & Sons, also known as Steinway, (i/ˈstaɪnweɪ/) is an American and German piano company, founded in 1853 in Manhattan, New York City, by German immigrant Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg (later known as Henry E. Steinway). The company's growth led to the opening of a factory in Queens, New York City, and a factory in Hamburg, Germany. The factory in Queens supplies the Americas and the factory in Hamburg supplies the rest of the world.
Steinway has been described as a prominent piano company, known for making pianos of high quality and for inventions within the area of piano development. Steinway has been granted 126 patents in piano making; the first in 1857. The company's share of the high-end grand piano market consistently exceeds 80 percent. The company's dominant position in the high-end piano market has been criticized, with some musicians and writers arguing that it has blocked innovation and led to a homogenization of the sound favored by pianists.
Steinway pianos have received numerous awards. One of the first is a gold medal won in 1855 at the American Institute Fair at the New York Crystal Palace. From 1855 to 1862, Steinway pianos received 35 gold medals. Several awards and recognitions followed, including 3 medals at the International Exposition of 1867 in Paris. The company holds a royal warrant of appointment to Queen Elizabeth II.
A son is a male offspring; a boy or man in relation to his parents. The female counterpart is a daughter.
In pre-industrial societies and some current countries with agriculture-based economies, a higher value was, and still is, assigned to sons rather than daughters, giving males higher social status, because males were physically stronger, and could perform farming tasks more effectively.
In China, a One-child Policy is in effect in order to address rapid population growth. Official birth records have shown a rise in the level of male births since the policy was brought into law. This has been attributed to a number of factors, including the illegal practice of sex-selective abortion and widespread under-reporting of female births.
In patrilineal societies, sons will customarily inherit an estate before daughters.
In some cultures, the eldest son has special privileges. For example, in Biblical times, the first-born male was bequeathed the most goods from their father. Some Japanese social norms involving the eldest son are: "that parents are more likely to live with their eldest child if their eldest child is a son" and "that parents are most likely to live with their eldest son even if he is not the eldest child".
The Allis-Chalmers model B was a tractor produced by the Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing company from 1937 to 1957. With over 125,000 units produced, the model B became one of the best selling tractors for Allis-Chalmers and most loved tractors of its time. Known best for its versatility and adaptability, the model B was also one of the longest production tractors for Allis-Chalmers as well. Over the years of production the B came in several different variations including the Asparagus B, Potato Special, and the IB industrial tractor. The Model B was designed by Brooks Stevens an industrial designer and graphic designer.
In the early thirties, Allis-Chalmers tractor division manager Harry Merritt studied the farm census figures and discovered that of the nearly seven million farms in America, some four million were of 100 acres (0.40 km2) or less. Furthermore, the million or so tractors at work on American farms were nearly all on the larger ones. Although the Fordson tractor and then the first-generation row-crop tractors, including the Farmall, Allis-Chalmers's own Model WC, and others, had been gaining significant market penetration and making mechanised agriculture ever more popular, Merritt concluded that there was a need for four million small, inexpensive tractors to fill the needs of the small farmers still using horses. Merritt set out to build the tractor that would finally put the horse out to pasture.
Steinway Hall (German: Steinway-Haus) is the name of buildings housing concert halls, showrooms and sales departments for Steinway & Sons pianos. The first Steinway Hall was opened in 1866 in New York City. Today, Steinway Halls and Steinway-Häuser are located in world cities such as New York City, London, Berlin, and Vienna.
A related concept by Steinway is Steinway Piano Galleries. Steinway Piano Galleries have all the same features as Steinway Halls but are smaller.
In 1864, William Steinway built elegant showrooms housing over 100 Steinway & Sons pianos at 71-73 East 14th Street, between University Place and Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. During the next two years, demand for Steinway pianos had increased dramatically. Construction of the first Steinway Hall was pushed by the need for expansion, increased promotion, and better presentation of pianos and music culture through regular live performances. William Steinway carried planning and construction of the first Steinway Hall with the full support and cooperation from the City of New York. The concert hall was designed with 2,000 seats, and had a concert stage for a full 100-piece symphony orchestra.
Lang Lang may refer to:
The making of a Steinway piano is a time-honored process involving the hands of many skilled craftspeople over the course of almost a full year. Steinway & Sons pianos are built in just two factories worldwide - one in Astoria, NY and one in Hamburg, Germany. Both factories have been building pianos for well over a century, and although Steinway has always been at the cutting edge in utilizing and perfecting the latest technology where it could make the piano better, we have found that certain things are simply better when done by skilled craftspeople than by a machine. For that reason, many parts of the process in building a Steinway have remained essentially unchanged for generations. So much so, that we were able to take decades-old audio from a narrated factory tour by the late John H....
Since 1853, Steinway pianos have set an uncompromising standard for sound, touch, beauty, and investment value. Steinway remains the choice of 9 out of 10 concert artists, and it is the preferred piano of countless musicians, professional and amateur, throughout the world. In this video, Ron Losby, President - Americas, Steinway & Sons, covers some of the patented features that make a Steinway the world's finest piano.

At the Philharmonie Essen Lang Lang presented Spirio, Steinway's high resolution player piano, together with Dr. Walter Steindlegger from Steinway & Sons Dusseldorf. Lang Lang explains the added value of Spirio, in addition to the entertainment value. He says himself that to own a Spirio is like the Artist playing your Steinway live at home, which can even be beneficial for pianists in training.

The Steinway Model B grand piano is often referred to by pianists as “the perfect piano.” The first Model B was produced in 1878; it is now Steinway’s best-selling piano. The piano is constructed by fifty craftspeople over a period of more than twelve months. Attention to detail is key to achieving the pianists’ accolade of “perfect piano”: bracing bars and joints are dowelled and glued without screws; action mechanisms are hand-assembled and the pianos are tuned, voiced and regulated fastidiously. Exceptional construction and outstanding results.

To build the best piano possible".

The Steinway Piano Factory was 3 blocks away from the mansion that the Steinway family owned in the late 19th century in Queens New York. It is the last of the standing mansions from the Victorian Era along the East River, and is made entirely of granite. It sits on hill that once overlooked the river not far from Riker's Island. Mike Halberian, the owner featured in the film has died since this film was made in 2006 and his children have taken control of the property and is up for sale. It is hoped that it will be preserved.
