The Chinese navy “warned” a US warship to leave waters near a reef in the South China Sea, Beijing said, after the US carried out its first ‘freedom of navigation’ patrol in the disputed region under Donald Trump’s administration.
The USS Dewey sailed close to Mischief Reef in the Spratly Islands, one of a string of islets, shoals and reefs that China claims in the resource rich and strategically important waters, US officials said.

CHINESE fighters put pressure on AMERICAN planes in THE SOUTH CHINA SEA
Two Chinese J-10 fighters have joined the US P-3 Orion reconnaissance aircraft at less than 200m in the South China Sea airspace.
According to ABC, the incident occurred May 25 in an area 240km southeast of Hainan Island in the north-east of the South China Sea. An unnamed US defense official said one of the two J-10s had flown in front of the US aircraft at less than 200m. The second J-10 fighter on the right side of the P-3 Orion is about 680m.

The U.S. Navy has previously sent ships and planes near the disputed territory to signal to China that it intends to keep critical sea lanes open.
However, Beijing's foreign ministry said the vessel was trespassing and has been warned to leave, adding it was undermining China's sovereignty and security interests.

"The Chinese Navy identified the relevant U.S. navy vessel in accordance with the law and warned it to leave. The relevant actions taken by the U.S. vessel undermine China's sovereignty and security interests and are very likely to cause an expected sea and air accident. We are strongly dissatisfied and firmly opposed to that."
The spokesman also said the U.S. move has disrupted positive efforts by China and ASEAN members in trying to resolve the situation in the South China Sea.

"With the concerted efforts made by regional countries, like China and the ASEAN countries, the situation in the South China Sea is cooling down and showing positive signs of development. However, what the US has done causes severe disruptions of the process of dialogue and consultation. It will bring itself no good while hurting others."

CHINA loudly called for US ships to leave THE SOUTH CHINA SEA
China said on May 25 that its warships had issued a warning signal and asked American warship to leave after it moved in a man-made island encroached by Beijing on the island. East Sea 12 nautical miles.
Speaking at a monthly regular monthly press conference in Beijing on May 25, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Ren Guoqiang said Beijing issued a tough warning to the United States after the ship was detected. In the sixteenth century, the world had little knowledge about Southeast Asia. Western merchants and sailors of that time called the sea, which is encompassed by the present-day Southeast Asian countries, the “South China Sea” to refer to the enclosed sea basin and its location in relation to the surrounding countries lying to the north of Australia, east of India, and south of China.
Notably, ancient Chinese historical documents called the sea 交阯洋 (Giao Chỉ Dương), which means the Sea of Jiaozhi or Jiaozhi Sea and that, Jiaozhi is an ancient name of Vietnam. Other lesser known names include Champa Sea or Sea of Cham, after the maritime kingdom that flourished between the seventh and sixteenth centuries.
In this modern era, as human civilization evolved towards a multi-faceted global collaboration, the international community, since the 20th century, has geographically formed a sub-region in Asia to address mankind’s need. This region was officially named Southeast Asia and consists of Burma, Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam.
Southeast Asia represents approximately 600 million people who have, in a joint effort, made unique and original contributions to modern civilization in many aspects, including culture, science, education, economics, politics, etc. In addition to the above, these are facts:
1. The United Nations has officially recognized the region and named it “Southeast Asia”.
2. The countries of Southeast Asia encompass almost the entire South China Sea with a total coastline measuring approximately 130,000 kilometers (81,250 miles) long; whereas the Southern China’s coastline measured about 2,800 kilometers (1,750 miles) in length.
3. Freedom of navigation on the sea is not restricted to a specific country. It is a common heritage of mankind and has actually been used by the international community for centuries as the second most important water channel in the world.
Join the campaign to ask the Presidents and Prime Ministers of 11 countries of Southeast Asia, the President of United Nations Atlas of the Oceans, and the CEOs and Presidents of 12 geographic organizations around the world to change the name “South China Sea” to “Southeast Asia Sea”.

China said on May 25 that its warships had issued a warning signal and asked American warship to leave after it moved in a man-made island encroached by Beijing on the island. East Sea 12 nautical miles.
Speaking at a monthly regular monthly press conference in Beijing on May 25, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Ren Guoqiang said Beijing issued a tough warning to the United States after the ship was detected. USS Dewey of the US Navy conducted patrols near the Mischief Reef in the Spratly Islands of Vietnam.
According to Reuters, Chinese warships have warned USS Dewey of the United States and loudly asked the ship to leave the patrol area. Mr. Ren said the US moves are not conducive to peace and stability in the South China Sea.

In the sixteenth century, the world had little knowledge about Southeast Asia. Western merchants and sailors of that time called the sea, which is encompassed by the present-day Southeast Asian countries, the “South China Sea” to refer to the enclosed sea basin and its location in relation to the surrounding countries lying to the north of Australia, east of India, and south of China.
Notably, ancient Chinese historical documents called the sea 交阯洋 (Giao Chỉ Dương), which means the Sea of Jiaozhi or Jiaozhi Sea and that, Jiaozhi is an ancient name of Vietnam. Other lesser known names include Champa Sea or Sea of Cham, after the maritime kingdom that flourished between the seventh and sixteenth centuries.
In this modern era, as human civilization evolved towards a multi-faceted global collaboration, the international community, since the 20th century, has geographically formed a sub-region in Asia to address mankind’s need. This region was officially named Southeast Asia and consists of Burma, Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam.
Southeast Asia represents approximately 600 million people who have, in a joint effort, made unique and original contributions to modern civilization in many aspects, including culture, science, education, economics, politics, etc. In addition to the above, these are facts:
1. The United Nations has officially recognized the region and named it “Southeast Asia”.
2. The countries of Southeast Asia encompass almost the entire South China Sea with a total coastline measuring approximately 130,000 kilometers (81,250 miles) long; whereas the Southern China’s coastline measured about 2,800 kilometers (1,750 miles) in length.
3. Freedom of navigation on the sea is not restricted to a specific country. It is a common heritage of mankind and has actually been used by the international community for centuries as the second most important water channel in the world.
Join the campaign to ask the Presidents and Prime Ministers of 11 countries of Southeast Asia, the President of United Nations Atlas of the Oceans, and the CEOs and Presidents of 12 geographic organizations around the world to change the name “South China Sea” to “Southeast Asia Sea”.

Hundreds of helicopters packed with escapees were flown toward the South China Sea, searching for aircraft carriers. Many crash-landed when they ran out of fuel; others were pushed off the carriers’ decks into the sea to make room for more to land. Pishkun is a Blackfeet American Indian term referring to the site where roaming bison were killed by driving them over a cliff. South China Sea Pishkun shows the machinery of war in its last moments, crashing, struggling, sinking and dying in the sea.

Investigators believe that the PuQi factory is only one of many engaged in the trade of endangered sharks and their products throughout coastal China.
A processing plant by the name of ‘China Wenzhou Yueqing Marine Organisms
Health Protection Foods Co Ltd’ located in China's PuQi township near Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, was the target of a WildLifeRisk investigation spanning from January 2010 to December 2013. Investigators discovered that the plant has been reaping huge profits from the death of a minimum of six hundred endangered whale sharks a year.
The investigation found that whale shark fins are dried in PuQi and sent to Guangzhou, situated in China's southern Guangdong Province, where they are sold to restaurant owners who commonly use them in the trade as ornaments. The large fins are usually tied with red ribbons and placed on display in entrances, reception areas, or the windows of restaurants selling shark fin soup to attract customers.
Investigators learned that shark skins are sold as leather into the bag trade, while whale shark lips, stomach and flesh are sold into the restaurant trade as 'food'. However, the real money-maker, is the shark’s liver. Shark oil is a valuable product that is concentrated in high quantities in the liver. Oil from the liver is extracted for skin care products and lipstick, as well as for Omega-3 health supplements. These supplements are currently being sold internationally in contravention of CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) regulations, as well as relevant Chinese national laws and regulations. It has further been suggested that the Jaihua Omega-3 pills may contain heavy metals such as methyl- mercury, although this has not yet been independently verified.
Factory general manager, Mr. Li Guang, has also admitted on camera that countless basking sharks and great white sharks – two of three species currently afforded the highest protection under CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) – are also being industrially processed at his PuQi factory.
Investigators discovered that the liver oil from whale and basking sharks is being sent to another processing plant on China's Hainan Island, 'Hainan Jiahua Marine Products Bio- Pharmaceutical Co Ltd'.
In Hainan the oil is blended with other types of shark liver oil in preparation for export to the United States and Canada in contravention of the internationally-binding CITES agreement. Furthermore, Mr. Li admitted to intentionally smuggling other whale shark products out of the country to be sold for human consumption, including the meat and skin.
In a joint-statement, Alex Hofford and Paul Hilton of WildLifeRisk said, “We went to PuQi three times in the last three years, and on each occasion the scale of the slaughter was truly staggering. How these harmless creatures, these gentle giants of the deep, can be slaughtered on such an industrial scale is beyond belief - all for human vanity; lipsticks, face creams, health supplements, shark fin soup restaurants etc. We firmly believe the trade must stop, and it must stop now, or else these animals will eventually face extinction.”
Undercover footage and audio recordings obtained by WildLifeRisk reveal that migratory whale sharks present in Australian waters are being caught off the coast of China in the South China Sea, and also further afield in the Pacific – specifically in waters of the Philippines, Indonesia and even as far away as Mexico. Evidence gathered points to an extensive trade network fanning out from China across the globe.
Intentionally or not, these fishermen stand to reap a hefty rewards for their efforts, as a single whale shark can purportedly sell for up to RMB200,000 (US$31,000) straight off the fishing vessel. After money is exchanged, the sharks may be partially processed on the dock, or transported whole to third party processing plants, such as the one in PuQi.
WildLifeRisk investigators have visited the factory in PuQi several times over the last three years. On each occasion, oil samples were obtained for DNA testing to confirm that the products were in fact of endangered origin. Samples were sent for DNA testing to 'Save Our Seas Shark Center' and the 'Guy Harvey Research Institute' in Miami, Florida, United States.
The WildLifeRisk investigation also revealed that whole whale sharks being obtained from Chinese coastal fishermen through an elaborate network of agents and middlemen.

The Chinese navy issued warnings eight times as a U.S. surveillance plane on Wednesday swooped over islands that Beijing is using to extend its zone of influence.
The series of man-made islands and the massive Chinese military build-up on them have alarmed the Pentagon, which is carrying out the surveillance flights in order to make clear the U.S. does not recognize China's territorial claims. The militarized islands have also alarmed America's regional allies.
Former CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell told CNN's Erin Burnett Wednesday night that the confrontation indicates there is "absolutely" a risk of the U.S. and China going to war sometime in the future.
A CNN team was given exclusive access to join in the surveillance flights over the contested waters, which the Pentagon allowed for the first time in order to raise awareness about the challenge posed by the islands and the growing U.S. response.
CNN was aboard the P8-A Poseidon, America's most advanced surveillance and submarine-hunting aircraft, and quickly learned that the Chinese are themselves displeased by the U.S. pushback.
"This is the Chinese navy ... This is the Chinese navy ... Please go away ... to avoid misunderstanding," a voice in English crackled through the radio of the aircraft in which CNN was present.
This is the first time the Pentagon has declassified video of China's building activity and audio of Chinese challenges of a U.S. aircraft.
The aircraft flew at 15,000 feet in the air at its lowest point, but the U.S. is considering flying such surveillance missions even closer over the islands, as well as sailing U.S. warships within miles of them, as part of the new, more robust U.S. military posture in the area.
Soon after the Chinese communication was heard, its source appeared on the horizon seemingly out of nowhere: an island made by China some 600 miles from its coastline.

The Fortaleza Do Monte is a typical Portuguese fortified complex strategically located on a hill above the old cathedral in the heart of the city. Its many old canons and mighty fortress walls are reminders of those times when invasion was a constant threat.
The old centre of the city is the triangular Largo Do Senado, Senate Square. Its wonderful colonial buildings with their light-colored facades were built at the end of the 19th century and completely renovated in the final decade of the 20th.
Macau's largest Buddhist temple, Templo de Kun Iam Tong, dates back 400 years to the Ming Dynasty when its original foundations were built. Beyond its main gate, just off a busy street in the north of the city, is a peaceful oasis of silence and contemplation, a mystic place in which stone lions, golden Buddhas and all who visit are surrounded by serene, aromatic wisps of smoke.
The beautiful Jardim de Lou Lim Ioc Park is situated in the northern less touristy business district of the city. It was designed in the 19th century by a wealthy Chinese trader, Lou Kau. This marvelous oasis is an idyllic setting with a lotus pond, rocks, grottos and waterfalls.
Excursions are available on restored motorized junks that leave from the City's harbor several times a day.
Taipa is the larger of the two islands that belong to Macau. The tangled and narrow alleys in the centre of Vila da Taipa abound with rural character and Portuguese street signs are painted on azulejos. The island's shops and light-colored houses would be equally at home in Portugal.
Although the Macau of today has much contemporary flair, it continues to enjoy a rich colonial inheritance that is well worth seeing.

The Philipines’s President Duterte, ordered military troop to occupy at least nine Philippines-Controlled islands in the South China Sea.
During a press briefing in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Duterte said that there is a need to maintain jurisdiction over the disputed waters.
"We tried to be friends with everybody but we have to maintain our jurisdiction now, at least the areas under our control. And I have ordered the armed forces to occupy all – these so many islands, I think nine or ten – build structures and place the Philippine flag," Duterte said after delivering a speech before soldiers at Camp Artemio Ricarte. He added that "It looks like everybody is making a grab for the islands there, so we better live on those that are still vacant”
Duterte also said he could visit Thitu island on June 12 to mark Philippine Independence Day and raise the nation's flag there. An official at the Chinese embassy in Manila seemed surprised when asked by AFP to comment on Duterte's declaration, but referred questions on the matter to the Chinese foreign ministry in Beijing.
The Philippines controls nine islets in the disputed Spratlys region, the largest of which is Pag-asa, an area under Palawan’s fifth class town Kalayaan. Other Philippine-occupied islets in Spratlys are Ayungin Shoal, Lawak Island, Parola Island, Patag Island, Kota Island, Rizal Reef, Likas Island and Panata Island.
The announcement comes a day ahead of the first time President Trump and Xi summit in Florida this Thursday and Friday.

Between Sarawak and Sabah is the tiny sultanate of Brunei Darussalm whose capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, looks like something from an exotic fantasy. In the north east of Sabah is the majestic Mount Kinabalu, at more than thirteen thousand feet above sea level the highest mountain between the Himalayas and New Guinea. Borneo is a country of natural wonder, full of adventure. A land of head hunters, mysterious cultures and exotic wildlife and an island far off the main tourist trail. The South China Sea: That’s always the freight going on with international shipping. Approximately $5 trillion of cargo ships through its shipping lanes every year.
But there’s conflict there. China claims almost all of the South China Sea as its sovereign territory. But Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, and Taiwan all have conflicting claims.
To strengthen its claims China has literally built man-made islands in the South China Sea, which apparently is a thing you can do. The problem is it didn’t sit well with China’s neighbors that have conflicting claims. Did I mention China militarized these islands? Yeah, this didn’t sit well with the United States either.
Tensions grew as the U.S. refused to recognize these islands under the Obama administration, which did things like passing a warship right next to the islands to make clear the U.S. stance that these are international waters, not China’s territory.
That tension intensified with Donald Trump moving into the Oval Office. President Trump’s Secretary of State nominee, Rex Tillerson said the U.S. would stop China from building more of these islands and deny China’s access to the ones they’ve already built.
China’s state-run newspaper said Washington would have to wage a large scale war in the South China Sea to prevent Chinese access to these islands.

An unnamed US defense official said one of the two J-10s had flown in front of the US aircraft at less than 200m. The second J-10 fighter on the right side of the P-3 Orion is about 680m.

In the sixteenth century, the world had little knowledge about Southeast Asia. Western merchants and sailors of that time called the sea, which is encompassed by the present-day Southeast Asian countries, the “South China Sea” to refer to the enclosed sea basin and its location in relation to the surrounding countries lying to the north of Australia, east of India, and south of China.
Notably, ancient Chinese historical documents called the sea 交阯洋 (Giao Chỉ Dương), which means the Sea of Jiaozhi or Jiaozhi Sea and that, Jiaozhi is an ancient name of Vietnam. Other lesser known names include Champa Sea or Sea of Cham, after the maritime kingdom that flourished between the seventh and sixteenth centuries.
In this modern era, as human civilization evolved towards a multi-faceted global collaboration, the international community, since the 20th century, has geographically formed a sub-region in Asia to address mankind’s need. This region was officially named Southeast Asia and consists of Burma, Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam.
Southeast Asia represents approximately 600 million people who have, in a joint effort, made unique and original contributions to modern civilization in many aspects, including culture, science, education, economics, politics, etc. In addition to the above, these are facts:
1. The United Nations has officially recognized the region and named it “Southeast Asia”.
2. The countries of Southeast Asia encompass almost the entire South China Sea with a total coastline measuring approximately 130,000 kilometers (81,250 miles) long; whereas the Southern China’s coastline measured about 2,800 kilometers (1,750 miles) in length.
3. Freedom of navigation on the sea is not restricted to a specific country. It is a common heritage of mankind and has actually been used by the international community for centuries as the second most important water channel in the world.
Join the campaign to ask the Presidents and Prime Ministers of 11 countries of Southeast Asia, the President of United Nations Atlas of the Oceans, and the CEOs and Presidents of 12 geographic organizations around the world to change the name “South China Sea” to “Southeast Asia Sea”.

South China Sea Pishkun is Dinh Q. Lê’s first animation, based on an event that took place on 30 April 1975, at the end of America’s war in Vietnam. With the North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong marching towards Saigon the Southern Vietnamese Army, American military and USA diplomatic personnel were desperately endeavouring to escape. Hundreds of helicopters packed with escapees were flown toward the South China Sea, searching for aircraft carriers. Many crash-landed when they ran out of fuel; others were pushed off the carriers’ decks into the sea to make room for more to land. Pishkun is a Blackfeet American Indian term referring to the site where roaming bison were killed by driving them over a cliff. South China Sea Pishkun shows the machinery of war in its last moments, crashing, struggling, sinking and dying in the sea.

Planet's biggest slaughter of whale sharks exposed in PuQi, Zhejiang Province, China
HONG KONG, 27 January 2014 – Hong Kong-based marine conservation NGO WildLifeRisk has revealed that at least one factory in China's Zhejiang Province is killing over 600 whale sharks annually, in what appears to be the world's largest wholesale slaughter of an internationally- protected endangered species. Investigators believe that the PuQi factory is only one of many engaged in the trade of endangered sharks and their products throughout coastal China.
A processing plant by the name of ‘China Wenzhou Yueqing Marine Organisms
Health Protection Foods Co Ltd’ located in China's PuQi township near Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, was the target of a WildLifeRisk investigation spanning from January 2010 to December 2013. Investigators discovered that the plant has been reaping huge profits from the death of a minimum of six hundred endangered whale sharks a year.
The investigation found that whale shark fins are dried in PuQi and sent to Guangzhou, situated in China's southern Guangdong Province, where they are sold to restaurant owners who commonly use them in the trade as ornaments. The large fins are usually tied with red ribbons and placed on display in entrances, reception areas, or the windows of restaurants selling shark fin soup to attract customers.
Investigators learned that shark skins are sold as leather into the bag trade, while whale shark lips, stomach and flesh are sold into the restaurant trade as 'food'. However, the real money-maker, is the shark’s liver. Shark oil is a valuable product that is concentrated in high quantities in the liver. Oil from the liver is extracted for skin care products and lipstick, as well as for Omega-3 health supplements. These supplements are currently being sold internationally in contravention of CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) regulations, as well as relevant Chinese national laws and regulations. It has further been suggested that the Jaihua Omega-3 pills may contain heavy metals such as methyl- mercury, although this has not yet been independently verified.
Factory general manager, Mr. Li Guang, has also admitted on camera that countless basking sharks and great white sharks – two of three species currently afforded the highest protection under CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) – are also being industrially processed at his PuQi factory.
Investigators discovered that the liver oil from whale and basking sharks is being sent to another processing plant on China's Hainan Island, 'Hainan Jiahua Marine Products Bio- Pharmaceutical Co Ltd'.
In Hainan the oil is blended with other types of shark liver oil in preparation for export to the United States and Canada in contravention of the internationally-binding CITES agreement. Furthermore, Mr. Li admitted to intentionally smuggling other whale shark products out of the country to be sold for human consumption, including the meat and skin.
In a joint-statement, Alex Hofford and Paul Hilton of WildLifeRisk said, “We went to PuQi three times in the last three years, and on each occasion the scale of the slaughter was truly staggering. How these harmless creatures, these gentle giants of the deep, can be slaughtered on such an industrial scale is beyond belief - all for human vanity; lipsticks, face creams, health supplements, shark fin soup restaurants etc. We firmly believe the trade must stop, and it must stop now, or else these animals will eventually face extinction.”
Undercover footage and audio recordings obtained by WildLifeRisk reveal that migratory whale sharks present in Australian waters are being caught off the coast of China in the South China Sea, and also further afield in the Pacific – specifically in waters of the Philippines, Indonesia and even as far away as Mexico. Evidence gathered points to an extensive trade network fanning out from China across the globe.
Intentionally or not, these fishermen stand to reap a hefty rewards for their efforts, as a single whale shark can purportedly sell for up to RMB200,000 (US$31,000) straight off the fishing vessel. After money is exchanged, the sharks may be partially processed on the dock, or transported whole to third party processing plants, such as the one in PuQi.
WildLifeRisk investigators have visited the factory in PuQi several times over the last three years. On each occasion, oil samples were obtained for DNA testing to confirm that the products were in fact of endangered origin. Samples were sent for DNA testing to 'Save Our Seas Shark Center' and the 'Guy Harvey Research Institute' in Miami, Florida, United States.
The WildLifeRisk investigation also revealed that whole whale sharks being obtained from Chinese coastal fishermen through an elaborate network of agents and middlemen.

The investigation found that whale shark fins are dried in PuQi and sent to Guangzhou, situated in China's southern Guangdong Province, where they are sold to restaurant owners who commonly use them in the trade as ornaments. The large fins are usually tied with red ribbons and placed on display in entrances, reception areas, or the windows of restaurants selling shark fin soup to attract customers.
Investigators learned that shark skins are sold as leather into the bag trade, while whale shark lips, stomach and flesh are sold into the restaurant trade as 'food'. However, the real money-maker, is the shark’s liver. Shark oil is a valuable product that is concentrated in high quantities in the liver. Oil from the liver is extracted for skin care products and lipstick, as well as for Omega-3 health supplements. These supplements are currently being sold internationally in contravention of CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) regulations, as well as relevant Chinese national laws and regulations. It has further been suggested that the Jaihua Omega-3 pills may contain heavy metals such as methyl- mercury, although this has not yet been independently verified.
Factory general manager, Mr. Li Guang, has also admitted on camera that countless basking sharks and great white sharks – two of three species currently afforded the highest protection under CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) – are also being industrially processed at his PuQi factory.
Investigators discovered that the liver oil from whale and basking sharks is being sent to another processing plant on China's Hainan Island, 'Hainan Jiahua Marine Products Bio- Pharmaceutical Co Ltd'.
In Hainan the oil is blended with other types of shark liver oil in preparation for export to the United States and Canada in contravention of the internationally-binding CITES agreement. Furthermore, Mr. Li admitted to intentionally smuggling other whale shark products out of the country to be sold for human consumption, including the meat and skin.
In a joint-statement, Alex Hofford and Paul Hilton of WildLifeRisk said, “We went to PuQi three times in the last three years, and on each occasion the scale of the slaughter was truly staggering. How these harmless creatures, these gentle giants of the deep, can be slaughtered on such an industrial scale is beyond belief - all for human vanity; lipsticks, face creams, health supplements, shark fin soup restaurants etc. We firmly believe the trade must stop, and it must stop now, or else these animals will eventually face extinction.”
Undercover footage and audio recordings obtained by WildLifeRisk reveal that migratory whale sharks present in Australian waters are being caught off the coast of China in the South China Sea, and also further afield in the Pacific – specifically in waters of the Philippines, Indonesia and even as far away as Mexico. Evidence gathered points to an extensive trade network fanning out from China across the globe.
Intentionally or not, these fishermen stand to reap a hefty rewards for their efforts, as a single whale shark can purportedly sell for up to RMB200,000 (US$31,000) straight off the fishing vessel. After money is exchanged, the sharks may be partially processed on the dock, or transported whole to third party processing plants, such as the one in PuQi.
WildLifeRisk investigators have visited the factory in PuQi several times over the last three years. On each occasion, oil samples were obtained for DNA testing to confirm that the products were in fact of endangered origin. Samples were sent for DNA testing to 'Save Our Seas Shark Center' and the 'Guy Harvey Research Institute' in Miami, Florida, United States.
The WildLifeRisk investigation also revealed that whole whale sharks being obtained from Chinese coastal fishermen through an elaborate network of agents and middlemen.

The Chinese navy issued warnings eight times as a U.S. surveillance plane on Wednesday swooped over islands that Beijing is using to extend its zone of influence.
The series of man-made islands and the massive Chinese military build-up on them have alarmed the Pentagon, which is carrying out the surveillance flights in order to make clear the U.S. does not recognize China's territorial claims. The militarized islands have also alarmed America's regional allies.
Former CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell told CNN's Erin Burnett Wednesday night that the confrontation indicates there is "absolutely" a risk of the U.S. and China going to war sometime in the future.
A CNN team was given exclusive access to join in the surveillance flights over the contested waters, which the Pentagon allowed for the first time in order to raise awareness about the challenge posed by the islands and the growing U.S. response.
CNN was aboard the P8-A Poseidon, America's most advanced surveillance and submarine-hunting aircraft, and quickly learned that the Chinese are themselves displeased by the U.S. pushback.
"This is the Chinese navy ... This is the Chinese navy ... Please go away ... to avoid misunderstanding," a voice in English crackled through the radio of the aircraft in which CNN was present.
This is the first time the Pentagon has declassified video of China's building activity and audio of Chinese challenges of a U.S. aircraft.
The aircraft flew at 15,000 feet in the air at its lowest point, but the U.S. is considering flying such surveillance missions even closer over the islands, as well as sailing U.S. warships within miles of them, as part of the new, more robust U.S. military posture in the area.
Soon after the Chinese communication was heard, its source appeared on the horizon seemingly out of nowhere: an island made by China some 600 miles from its coastline.
