Angelo Musco continues his journey, inspired by nature and its architecture, engaging classic and contemporary themes of birth, nutrition, renewal and community.
Earlier works engaged the nutritional energy of water, the power of a forest’s vascular system and then following that out to the end of limbs where nests would be found. And upon the threshold of those nests, what might we find now?
Each of Musco’s new pieces details a different story of what preceded the moment, a history unique to that image, fulfilling in the viewer’s mind a glimpse at a memory or a token of what has been left behind.
Musco’s signature is the meticulous construction, melding and weaving of tens-of-thousands of nude bodies that are with great time and care brought together to explore themes related to his own birth. A single work can take over a year to complete and incorporate over a million bodies.
In the AVES Series the images are minimal and restrained on the surface but complex, poetic and compelling just below the surface. The images are presented lightly floating on the air or gently falling downward, a frozen dance, a silent musical bridge, an ongoing paradox of lightness.

The Making of TEHOM
Two years ago Angelo Musco started production on Tehom. I documented one of numerous photo shoots that took place in a private pool on a penthouse rooftop in Tribeca. It was a beautiful day and the small cast of models was upbeat and very creative that afternoon. After months of shooting,
Angelo would continue work for two years creating an underwater world with an architecture of tens of thousands of nude human bodies. As he explains in the video, Tehom comes from a Hebrew word in Genesis signifying the great deep of the primordial waters of creation.
The final piece will stretch 48 feet long and 12 feet high with some figures reaching nearly life size. As I edited the action from above the water and cut it with the photos Angelo was taking below the surface I attempted to evoke the feeling of Tehom, the deep, as seen in the details from the final work toward the end of the video.
Tehom exhibits at the Carrie Secrist gallery in Chicago, opening May 1 and running through July 10, 2010.

Angelo Musco (actor)
Angelo Musco (October 18, 1872 in Catania – October 6, 1937 in Milan) was an Italian actor in theater and film. He was known for his comic abilities as well as for his carefully drawn psychological portraits.
Born into a poor Sicilian family, Musco worked at a number of menial, odd jobs in his youth, spending time as a barber, a shoemaker, and a mason. He broke into theatrical work by finding employment with the Opera dei Pupi, the local marionette theater. In 1899 he joined the theatrical company of Giovanni Grasso, whose actors performed only in the Sicilian language.
In 1902 Musco began a collaboration with Nino Martoglio, who had seen him in Rome in Malia of Luigi Capuana and I Mafiusi of Giuseppe Rizzotto and Gaetano Mosca. Martoglio became director of Musco's company in 1907, and wrote for him the plays San Giovanni decollatu and L'aria del continente. Musco also collaborated with Pier Maria Rosso di San Secondo, author of the play Madre, and he worked with Marinella Bragaglia and Rosina Anselmi. He also founded his own theater company, supported by the critic Renato Simoni and by Luigi Pirandello. The latter wrote a number of comedies for him to play, including Il berretto a sonagli (which he played in Rome), Liolà, and Pensaci, Giacomino!. This last was filmed with Musco in the lead role; his cinematic career had begun in 1932 and was a great success.

Un classico della risata, un omaggio ad uno dei più importanti autori italiani di commedie, il livornese Athos Setti oggi purtroppo poco ricordato. La commedia, scritta nel 1936 e conosciuta anche come "L'agonia di Schizzo", fu tenuta in repertorio per 29 anni dal grande Eduardo De Filippo, di cui Setti era amico e collaboratore. Eduardo, che la tradusse anche in film, l'ambientò a Napoli e la intitolò "Sogno di una notte di mezza sbornia". Altre versioni andarono in scena a cura di Ettore Petrolini (La fortuna di Cecè) e Angelo Musco (La profezia di Dante).
Emanuele Barresi, che ha firmato l'elaborazione e la regia dello spettacolo, oltre a vestire i panni del protagonista Alfredo, afferma: "Mi è sembrato giusto riportare sulle scene il testo originale de La fortuna si diverte che è ambientata in Toscana e non a Napoli o Roma come invece fecero Eduardo e Petrolini. E poi Setti era livornese e con questo nuovo spettacolo ho voluto rendere omaggio ad uno dei più importanti commediografi italiani, oggi poco conosciuto e rappresentato".
Al fianco del livornese Barresi, nel ruolo della moglie Isola, una straordinaria Daniela Morozzi (nota al grande pubblico nel ruolo di Vittoria, la poliziotta toscana della serie "Distretto di polizia" dal 2000 al 2010). Un duo ben sincronizzato nel mantenere il ritmo comico e il linguaggio vernacolare della vicenda.
La storia mantiene inalterata tutta la sua freschezza e narra le vicende di Alfredo che vive in un'umile dimora insieme alla famiglia; una notte riceve in sogno la visita di Dante Alighieri, che gli suggerisce quattro numeri da giocare al lotto, sottolineando però che essi rappresentano anche la data della sua morte. Alfredo non se lo fa ripetere due volte, gioca i numeri, vince e si trasferisce in un costoso appartamento per la felicità di tutta la famiglia, che festeggia e presto si adatta al nuovo e dispendioso stile di vita. L'unico che non riesce a gioire è Alfredo stesso, terrorizzato dalla sua imminente fine. Attraverso dialoghi e situazioni spassose, la vicenda si dipana fino all'immancabile colpo di scena finale.
