When Ali met Ry Cooder in 1992 they really bonded and Ali later presented him with the first instrument he made, a one-string lute called a djerkal. Recorded in just three days in LA in 1993 the resulting collaboration 'Talking Timbuktu' well deserved its Grammy Award. Relaxed and accessible, the music is complimented by Ry's subtle guitar work and sensitive production while retaining the integrity of Ali's performance.
Ali Farke Toure and Ry Cooder have long treasured each other’s recordings. They first met in London in 1992 while both were touring Europe. It was agreed that they should 'try something together'. This ‘something’ became ‘Talking Timbuktu’, a Grammy award-winning classic album.
In September '93 Toure was set to play a string of dates in the States and a week was set aside for recording his new album. Cooder was to play on a couple of tracks. A few hours’ rehearsal at Cooder's Santa Monica home hinted at inspiring possibilities. The Malian guitarist's next three Californian dates all featured Cooder as special guest. The recording followed a week later by which time Cooder had agreed to produce the entire album and play on every track. The whole album, recorded in three days, is now available on vinyl with an additional previously unreleased track.
World Circuit Records have established their reputation by producing some of the finest world music albums of the past two decades, specialising in music from Cuba and West Africa. The label is best known for the GRAMMY winning Buena Vista Social Club album, which is the biggest selling world music album of all time, and led to the phenomenal rise in popularity of Cuban music.
World Circuit's African artists enjoy equal prestige, including Grammy winning albums from Ali Farka Touré and kora virtuoso Toumani Diabaté, Mali's 'star of stars' Oumou Sangare, afrobeat legend Tony Allen, and the great Orchestra Baobab.

Ry Cooder
Ryland Peter "Ry" Cooder (born March 15, 1947) is an American musician, songwriter, film score composer, and record producer. He is a multi-instrumentalist but is best known for his slide guitar work, his interest in roots music from the United States, and his collaborations with traditional musicians from many countries.
Cooder's solo work has been eclectic, encompassing many genres. He has collaborated with many musicians, notably including Captain Beefheart, Ali Farka Touré, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Neil Young, Randy Newman, David Lindley, The Chieftains, and The Doobie Brothers, Carla Olson & the Textones (both on record and in film). He briefly formed a band named Little Village. He produced the Buena Vista Social Club album (1997), which became a worldwide hit. Wim Wenders directed the documentary film of the same name (1999), which was nominated for an Academy Award in 2000.
Cooder was ranked eighth on Rolling Stone magazine's 2003 list of "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" (David Fricke's Picks). A 2010 ranking by Gibson placed him at number 32.

When Ali met Ry Cooder in 1992 they really bonded and Ali later presented him with the first instrument he made, a one-string lute called a djerkal. Recorded in just three days in LA in 1993 the resulting collaboration 'Talking Timbuktu' well deserved its Grammy Award. Relaxed and accessible, the music is complimented by Ry's subtle guitar work and sensitive production while retaining the integrity of Ali's performance.
Ali Farke Toure and Ry Cooder have long treasured each other’s recordings. They first met in London in 1992 while both were touring Europe. It was agreed that they should 'try something together'. This ‘something’ became ‘Talking Timbuktu’, a Grammy award-winning classic album.
In September '93 Toure was set to play a string of dates in the States and a week was set aside for recording his new album. Cooder was to play on a couple of tracks. A few hours’ rehearsal at Cooder's Santa Monica home hinted at inspiring possibilities. The Malian guitarist's next three Californian dates all featured Cooder as special guest. The recording followed a week later by which time Cooder had agreed to produce the entire album and play on every track. The whole album, recorded in three days, is now available on vinyl with an additional previously unreleased track.
World Circuit Records have established their reputation by producing some of the finest world music albums of the past two decades, specialising in music from Cuba and West Africa. The label is best known for the GRAMMY winning Buena Vista Social Club album, which is the biggest selling world music album of all time, and led to the phenomenal rise in popularity of Cuban music.

Mali's Ali Farka Touré performs Diaraby live on BBC Later...with Jools Holland. Ali Farka Touré, the great singer and guitarist from Mali, is one of the most important musicians in African music. Pioneer of the move from traditional to modern African music, the three times GRAMMY winner was a crucial figure in the popularisation of Malian music. He became internationally famous through his solo albums and world tours and through his collaboration with Ry Cooder ‘Talking Timbuktu’. He also championed the careers of fellow Malian musicians, Toumani Diabaté, Bassekou Kouyaté, Oumou Sangaré and Rokia Traore amongst others. Postcard from Bob dated Saturday, 31 July, 2010: "Well, today was the day! The Summer 2010 Barbeque Road Trip. I called Matthew, Brian and David and planned this a week ago, so away we went. We pulled out of Houston and headed up 290 around 7:00 AM. Stopped in Carmine where Dad used to pick up his fav hard smoked sausage and snatched a few links. UUUMMMMMMM! Not too smoky, not too greasy, just right!!!!!! Great old local store where everybody had at least some teeth in their mouths! Thanks, Pops! Back on the road. Concert was from a two night run - the last of nine total dates on the NorCal tour. Shot on 16mm film with an audio remote truck in the alley. Movie was released in Europe but not in the US. Great band, at one of the best venues in the 'States, the last two nights of the mini-tour they were truly on fire. One venue was so small the band filled the stage and the dance floor.

A Buena Vista Social Club egy havannai, főként sötét bőrűek számára létrehozott, a negyvenes-ötvenes években működött könnyűzenei klub volt, amelyben jellegzetes kubai zenét játszottak. A Buena Vista Social Club mint klub a kilencvenes években már nem működött, de hajdanán a legjobb muzsikusok léptek ott fel. A producer-gitáros Ry Cooder 1979-ben indult el Havannába, hogy felkutassa a korszak még élő muzsikusait. Az így megalakult Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club zenekar az 1997-ben megjelent, immár több mint ötmillió példányban eladott Buena Vista Social Club című lemezével érte el népszerűsége csúcspontját
Mára a Buena Vista Social Club egy márkavédjeggyé vált: azon muzsikusok különféle projectjeit takarva, akiket a ’97-es Buena Vista Social Club című lemezről, vagy Wim Wenders azonos című dokumenminfilmjéből – mely az első Ibrahim Ferrer-szólólemez felvétele alkalmából készült - ismerhetünk.
A régi zenészek közül sokan már csak az angyaloknak muzsikálnak, hiszen távozott az élők sorából az énekes Ibrahim Ferrer (1927-2005), a gitáros Compay Segundo (1907-2005) vagy a zongorista Rubén González (1919-2003). A tizenöt muzsikust számláló társulat mára - néhány újonnan feltűnt kirívó tehetségű muzsikussal kiegészülve - Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club néven újrarendezte sorait, ráadásul a 2010-es turnéjukon újra velük énekel Omara Portuondo.

Az együttes Magyarországon - Budapesten kívül - még soha sem lépett fel. Most a PÉCS2010 alkalmából a pécsi közönség is megismerhette fergeteges virtuózitásukat.
A Buena Vista Social Club egy havannai, főként sötét bőrűek számára létrehozott, a negyvenes-ötvenes években működött könnyűzenei klub volt, amelyben jellegzetes kubai zenét játszottak. A Buena Vista Social Club mint klub a kilencvenes években már nem működött, de hajdanán a legjobb muzsikusok léptek ott fel. A producer-gitáros Ry Cooder 1979-ben indult el Havannába, hogy felkutassa a korszak még élő muzsikusait. Az így megalakult Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club zenekar az 1997-ben megjelent, immár több mint ötmillió példányban eladott Buena Vista Social Club című lemezével érte el népszerűsége csúcspontját
Mára a Buena Vista Social Club egy márkavédjeggyé vált: azon muzsikusok különféle projectjeit takarva, akiket a ’97-es Buena Vista Social Club című lemezről, vagy Wim Wenders azonos című dokumenminfilmjéből – mely az első Ibrahim Ferrer-szólólemez felvétele alkalmából készült - ismerhetünk.
A régi zenészek közül sokan már csak az angyaloknak muzsikálnak, hiszen távozott az élők sorából az énekes Ibrahim Ferrer (1927-2005), a gitáros Compay Segundo (1907-2005) vagy a zongorista Rubén González (1919-2003). A tizenöt muzsikust számláló társulat mára - néhány újonnan feltűnt kirívó tehetségű muzsikussal kiegészülve - Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club néven újrarendezte sorait, ráadásul a 2010-es turnéjukon újra velük énekel Omara Portuondo.

Ali Farka Touré, the great singer and guitarist from Mali, is one of the most important musicians in African music. Pioneer of the move from traditional to modern African music, the three times GRAMMY winner was a crucial figure in the popularisation of Malian music.
He became internationally famous through his solo albums and world tours and through his collaboration with Ry Cooder ‘Talking Timbuktu’. He also championed the careers of fellow Malian musicians, Toumani Diabaté, Bassekou Kouyaté, Oumou Sangaré and Rokia Traore amongst others.
Touré developed a highly individual and instantly recognisable take on the traditional music of the north of Mali, transposing ancient techniques to the Western guitar. He became known as the missing link between African music and the blues; Martin Scorsese called him ‘The DNA of the blues’. Touré was possessed during his musical initiation into the local gimbala river spirit religion and he is credited as being the creator of the ‘desert blues’ a style further popularised by Tinariwen and Songhoy Blues.
To commemorate the tenth anniversary of his death, Ali Farka Touré will be celebrated in his native Mali with a series of events over the weekend of 5th March. These will include an all-star concert in Bamako featuring Mali’s great stars, the final of a football tournament in his honour (Touré was a huge football fan), the laying of the foundation stone for Rue Ali Farka Touré, an exhibition at the National Museum and various other events. Earlier this week musical memorials took place in his home village of Niafunké in the north of Mali, which had until recently been occupied by jihadi forces who had banned music in much of the north of Mali.
Ali Farka Touré was unique in Malian music for his mastery of the country’s many distinctive regional styles and is revered as personifying the unity of the Malian people at this difficult time in Mali’s history.

The album has served as an important influence for Cook, in his solo work as well as his contributions to Megafaun and The Shouting Matches. "Well, today was the day! The Summer 2010 Barbeque Road Trip. I called Matthew, Brian and David and planned this a week ago, so away we went. We pulled out of Houston and headed up 290 around 7:00 AM. Stopped in Carmine where Dad used to pick up his fav hard smoked sausage and snatched a few links. UUUMMMMMMM! Not too smoky, not too greasy, just right!!!!!! Great old local store where everybody had at least some teeth in their mouths! Thanks, Pops! Back on the road.
First stop was the City Market in Giddings. Pulled in around 9 and loaded up with brisket, ribs and sausage. It just kept going from there. Town after town. Snow's up in Lexington. Then Louie Mueller's in Taylor along with the Taylor Cafe (with big Debbie!). Then, down to Elgin and the Southside Cafe. Dive by and wave at Meyer's Brothers! Back on the road, we make the pilgrimage to Lockhart, home of Smitty's, Kreuz's and Black's. Damn, I could die and live there! The last leg was down to Luling, home of the Luling City Meat Market. Two kinds of beef brisket, three kinds of ribs and 4 types of sausage. Twenty four pounds in all. And all the sauces, Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!! At every place we stopped, the folks opened up their pits and let me take close and personal pics. Get the story. Fill me in on their personal styles and methods. So much you can't capture with a camera.
Twelve hours, 370 miles and $250, OK. Spending the day with the boys eating at the best BBQ joints in these parts, priceless.

"A triumph.” The Sunday Times
When Ali met Ry Cooder in 1992 they really bonded and Ali later presented him with the first instrument he made, a one-string lute called a djerkal. Recorded in just three days in LA in 1993 the resulting collaboration 'Talking Timbuktu' well deserved its Grammy Award. Relaxed and accessible, the music is complimented by Ry's subtle guitar work and sensitive production while retaining the integrity of Ali's performance.
Ali Farke Toure and Ry Cooder have long treasured each other’s recordings. They first met in London in 1992 while both were touring Europe. It was agreed that they should 'try something together'. This ‘something’ became ‘Talking Timbuktu’, a Grammy award-winning classic album.
In September '93 Toure was set to play a string of dates in the States and a week was set aside for recording his new album. Cooder was to play on a couple of tracks. A few hours’ rehearsal at Cooder's Santa Monica home hinted at inspiring possibilities. The Malian guitarist's next three Californian dates all featured Cooder as special guest. The recording followed a week later by which time Cooder had agreed to produce the entire album and play on every track. The whole album, recorded in three days, is now available on vinyl with an additional previously unreleased track.

Rene Camacho is an Acoustic and Electric Bassist living in Los Angeles. Originally from Tucson, Arizona, Rene received a Degree in Jazz Studies and Composition from The University Of Arizona. While Trombone was his first instrument he always had an affinity for the Bass and in his college years the switch was made. Since moving to Los Angeles in 1996 Rene has had the opportunity to explore many musical ventures, both live and recording. When Rene first arrived to Los Angeles he began working with many Latin artists, most notably, a five year stint with Celia Cruz. There were also brief appearances with artists such as Tito Puente and Poncho Sanchez. From there Rene began branching out to different genres such as Jazz, Soul, R&B;, Country, as well as Rock. This has enabled him to record and tour with a wide variety of artists from different musical backgrounds. Such artists include Sergio Mendes, Ry Cooder, Kevin Eubanks, Oscar Castro Neves, Angelique Kidjo, Linda Ronstadt, Carol Welsman, Raul Malo (The Maveri ks), Rickie Lee Jones, Juan Gabriel, The Fifth Dimension, The Pointer Sister, Dean Brown, Susie Hansen, and Rebeca Mauleon. Rene continues to actively tour with Draco Rosa, Kevin Eubanks, Robben Ford, Canadian Pianist Carol Welsman and record with artists from all over the musical world.
