Munich (/ˈmjuːnɪk/; also /ˈmjuːnɪx/ in UK English; German: München, pronounced [ˈmʏnçn̩],Bavarian: Minga [ˈmɪŋ(ː)ɐ]) is the capital and largest city of the German state of Bavaria, on the banks of River Isar north of the Bavarian Alps. Munich is the third largest city in Germany, after Berlin and Hamburg and the 12th biggest city of the European Union with a population of above 1.5 million. The Munich Metropolitan Region is home to 5.8 million people. The city is a major centre of art, advanced technologies, finance, publishing, culture, innovation, education, business and tourism in Germany and Europe and enjoys a very high standard and quality of living, reaching #1 in Germany and #4 worldwide according to the 2015 Mercer survey.
The name of the city is derived from the Old/Middle High German term Munichen, meaning "by the monks". It derives from the monks of the Benedictine order who ran a monastery at the place that was later to become the Old Town of Munich; hence the monk depicted on the city's coat of arms. Munich was first mentioned in 1158. From 1255 the city was seat of the Bavarian Dukes. Black and gold—the colours of the Holy Roman Empire—have been the city's official colours since the time of Ludwig the Bavarian, when it was an imperial residence. Following a final reunification of the Wittelsbachian Duchy of Bavaria, previously divided and sub-divided for more than 200 years, the town became the country's sole capital in 1506. Catholic Munich was a cultural stronghold of the Counter-Reformation and a political point of divergence during the resulting Thirty Years' War, but remained physically untouched despite an occupation by the Protestant Swedes; as the townsfolk would rather open the gates of their town than risk siege and almost inevitable destruction. Like wide parts of the Holy Roman Empire, the area recovered slowly economically.

In Munich, where locals specialize in good living, we visit boisterous markets and go-for-Baroque palaces, while office workers surf in the Isar River. Heading into the foothills of the Alps, we tour the fairy-tale castles of "Mad" King Ludwig, and climb to the highest point in Germany atop the Zugspitze. Then we cross into Tirol to conquer a desolate ruined castle. © 2002 Rick Steves' Europe

The "Kinetic Sculpture" metaphorically translates into space the form-finding process of vehicle design. Filmed in Munich and Tegernsee, December 2010. I used a Panasonic GH13 and only the Voigtländer 25mm f/0.95 lens. All scenes were shot at between f/0.95 and 1.4 and at ISO's 800 and 1600. I'd have preferred to use the GH2 due to its better high ISO ability but the unit just didn't arrive in time. Much of the additional lighting, particularly in the forest section, was done by using the very powerful Lupine Betty bike lights. There was so much light bounce from the snow that is was possible to get some well lit footage. Conditions were also pretty cold, so the lights doubled up as great finger warmers too;-) Night rider is Max Schumann, riding a Fatmodule ANT and torching the way with a Lupine Wilma.

Münich offers much more than the Oktoberfest, the pretzel, large cups of beer and huge shopping malls. The neo-gothic palace of the City Hall, the unique domes of theCathedral of Our Lady, the pillars of the generals, the city gates, the eclectic buildings of the Residenz are all there for the eyes, while the markets and the taverns all serve the needs of the body. Besides that parks full of statues and fountains, temples from the middle age, rich museums and theatres make up the tempting force of the Bavarian capital. The modern city is represented by the BMW headquarters and the Olympic village, while outside the city there are such things as the Nymphenburg Palace

License Video: dissolve.com/products?media_type=video&producer;=Pete+R&sort;_by_date=true Last month, I went to Germany alone. I entered the country as lonely as a solo traveler could be. I ate alone, drank alone, and walked alone. But along the way, I met people, made new friends and rekindled old ones. By the time I left the country, I was no longer alone. I had the opportunity to be hosted by several German friends around the country, I partied with them, drink with them, and hung out with them. I experienced the alternative culture in Berlin. I lost my bag in Cologne (http://blog.bucketlistly.com/post/132467427542/bag-stolen-germany-cologne). I celebrated my Birthday with a Pool match and a rap battle concert in Dresden. It was a hell of a ride. As the saying goes, "Happiness is onl...

NECTAR & PULSE is a an eclectic company from Austria, producing personal cityguides with favourite insider tips by selected locals around the globe. NECTAR & PULSE was established out of a deep passion for inspiring people, a fascination for discovering hidden, authentic places and a desire to experience the world with all its different facets. People call us urban nomads. We’ve lived in Salzburg, Vienna, Hamburg, London, New York, Stockholm and Munich. On our journeys, it was always the locals themselves who proved to be the best guides. We realised, that in the end it’s the people who make a city: the freaky guy from the subway, the barista who pours the best espressos in town, the fashion-photographer who makes you laugh uncontrollably, the DJ’s who bring the club to dance, the Polish ...
Paris - Amsterdam June, 23rd – July 2nd 2011 DAY 1 June 24: Paris-St Quentin. 1100 meter height, 170 theoretical, practical 185-214 km It was a shock to the system to start with the longest stage on the first day of the tour. In theory it should have been a 170km stage rolling through the crowded streets of Paris, then along the tree- lined canals of north of the city and then onto the rolling grain field of northern France. That was the theory. In practice riders went missing or split into groups and some covered up to 214km on the stage. An amazing effort. The day was picture-perfect in terms of weather and conditions. Former professional rider Andrea Ferragato lead the Allianz and Mondial riders, representing six different countries, five Mondial BUs and five Allianz OEs, along one of...

The interplay of mechanical and electronic components creates a dynamic art piece reflecting the precise exchange between a great number of individual elements and the single, coherent picture that emerges from them. Attached by thin steel wires to individually-controlled stepper motors, 714 metal spheres move up and down, seemingly levitating.
