# 8 Vine Bridges of Iya Valley
Japan isn’t just home to big cities like Tokyo and Kyoto; it is also home to mysterious and strange places. One example is the misty West Iya Valley which is full of overgrown trees, flora, and the precarious “vine bridges”. The story of how these bridges came to be are lost to history, but what we do know is that they are made by real-life vines intertwined with planks. The bridge is sturdy but there are nearly one-foot gaps in between the planks, so if you’re a little nervous about walking on a bridge made of plants, you might want to find another way through the valley.

All you need to do is look at the Hussaini Hanging Bridge to understand why its so scary. It is a barely put together bridge that stretches across Borit Lake in Pakistan. With it’s sparse footing and steel wire it’s easy to see why it’s known by many as the world’s most dangerous bridge. Perhaps even scarier is the bridge right next to it which has collapsed and is treading water. It’s almost a warning that tells people not to use the bridge at all.

The Carrick-a-Rede bridge is a famous rope bridge in Northern Ireland that links the mainland Ireland to the tiny island Carrick-a-rede. It is not a very long walk at only 20 meters or 66 feet in length but levitates 98 feet above a bunch of rocks and sea waves. However, you might be nervous to cross this relatively short bridge because it is entirely made of wooden planks and rope knots.
# 5 Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge
The Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge opened in 2016, and it is a truly spine-tingling experience. The bridge is suspended 900 feet high right above the steep valley. This bridge was built so that anyone crossing it can enjoy the nature and breathtaking sights below them. But, you might be a little too nervous to take in the view as you stare down at the nearly 1,000-foot drop. The scariest part might be the fact that one of the glass panes cracked underneath the feet of the pedestrian traffic. Now, the bridge is limited to less than 800 people at a time.

The Zhangjiajie isn’t the only glass bridge in China. There’s another one known as the “Brave Men’s bridge” hanging in the Shiniuzhai National Park. Before 2014, the Brave Men’s Bridge already had a fierce reputation for being a harrowing walk. That’s when the park manager replaced the 300 meter or 980 feet long bridge just to make everything that much scarier.
# 3 Ai-Petri Bridges
In Crimea, there are these bridges that swing with the high winds of the Crimean mountains. The Ai-Petri bridge requires someone to have a gut of steel to get through. These peaks regularly experience gusts of up to 100 miles per hours many days of the year. If you can manage to cross these bridges, you will earn a beautiful view of the surrounding cities and the Black Sea.
# 2 Aiguille Du Midi Bridge
You can take a cable car all the way to the top of the Mount Blanc Massif mountain range in France and enjoy a view of the clouds. This bridge between two peaks is very short, but because you have to take a cable car up a mountain, it’s also very high. You will have to conquer any fear of heights as this short foot bridge is 9,200 feet high.
# 1 Eshima Ohashi Bridge
This list has some truly terrifying bridges, but this one might be the scariest to drive on. The Eshima Ohashi bridge connects the cities of Matsue and Sakaiminato in Japan, although it looks more like a rollercoaster than a freeway. It is known for having pretty much the steepest gradient of any bridge, and it’s so steep photos taken of it head on make cars look like they’re driving straight. Just remember to drive safely and keep your hands inside the vehicle at all times if you ever have to cross this bridge.

7 – Storseisundet Bridge - The Storseisundet Bridge connects the municipalities of Norway, and it is also the longest of eight bridges that make up “The Atlantic Road” linking the mainland to the islands of the archipelago. It is 850 feet long and stands at a height of 75 feet above the water. Construction of the bridge started in 1989 and took 6 years to build, primarily due to the fact that construction was halted 12 times due to hurricanes. It cost 120 million krone, or almost $1.5 million dollars. The toll bridge was projected to recoup the capital cost to build it within 15 years, but it actually paid for itself in 10.
6 – Rakotz Bridge - The Rakotz Bridge is located in Kromlauer Park in Germany. Built in 1860, the thin, arched bridge, was commissioned by the knight of the local town and built of stone from a nearby quarry. It is known as a Devil’s Bridge, because the people thought the bridge’s sinister looking design must have been built by Satan himself. What is unique about this bridge is that its curved span was designed to form a perfect half circle, and when viewed with its reflection in the lake, appears to form a perfect circle. Visitors can still enjoy the sight of this unique bridge, but none are allowed to cross it, for fear the span may collapse.
5 - U Bein Bridge - The U Bein Bridge, named after the mayor who built it, spans Taungthaman Lake in Myanmar. It is believed to be the longest teakwood bridge in the world. Constructed in 1850, the bridge consists of 1086 pillars that support 482 separate spans that comprise the bridge’s length. The teakwood that was used in the building of the bridge was reclaimed using wood from the old royal palace in Inwa. The bridge also has 9 passageways where the wood can be removed to let barges and large boats through. Despite its age, it is still in use by both locals and tourists today.
4 – Arch Triumph – inflatable bridge - An inflatable bridge was an unusual entrant by a Paris-based architecture group, into a French competition to design a new contemporary bridge across the river Seine in Paris. This bold, yet elegant bridge was specifically designed to differentiate itself from the other 37 bridges in Paris. And the inflatable bridge is no mere footbridge – it actually makes use of giant trampolines to shuttle pedestrians to the other side. It was also designed to be temporary, like the Eiffel Tower, which was supposed to be dismantled 20 years after the 1889 World Expo. The designers of the inflatable bridge can only hope that their bridge will last as long.

It was built in the 17th century to connect the village of Shaharah with other villages in the area. It was also designed to be easily destroyed in case of attack by Turkish invaders. The bridge spans a 300 foot deep canyon, high up in the mountains, and is popular with both locals and tourists alike. It can be reached by climbing the many steps carved into the steep mountainside.

Bridge
A bridge is a structure built to span physical obstacles without closing the way underneath such as a body of water, valley, or road, for the purpose of providing passage over the obstacle. There are many different designs that each serve a particular purpose and apply to different situations. Designs of bridges vary depending on the function of the bridge, the nature of the terrain where the bridge is constructed and anchored, the material used to make it, and the funds available to build it.
Etymology
The Oxford English Dictionary traces the origin of the word bridge to an Old English word brycg, of the same meaning. The word can be traced directly back to Proto-Indo-European *bʰrēw-. The word for the card game of the same name has a different origin.
History
The first bridges made by humans were probably spans of cut wooden logs or planks and eventually stones, using a simple support and crossbeam arrangement. Some early Americans used trees or bamboo poles to cross small caverns or wells to get from one place to another. A common form of lashing sticks, logs, and deciduous branches together involved the use of long reeds or other harvested fibers woven together to form a connective rope capable of binding and holding together the materials used in early bridges.

The Bridges
The Bridges is a shopping centre based in the city centre of Sunderland, England.
The shopping centre in Sunderland contains over 100 stores, which include; Boots, Burton, HMV, Debenhams, Disney, H&M, Build-A-Bear Workshop, Foot Locker, Lush, USC, Next, TK Maxx, Schuh, Waterstones, New Look, Topshop, River Island, Ernest Jones, Beaverbrooks, Republic, Blue inc, Menkind and many more. The centre also hosts two small supermarkets - Iceland and Tesco. The centre received 21 million shopping visits in 2012.
The Bridges has Ed's Easy Diner which opened in 2014 and six cafes: Caffe Nero, Costa Coffee, Esquires Coffee, Krispy Kreme, Starbucks and Greggs.
The centre also has three car parks integrated into the centre, namely the Bridges (Debenhams) Car Park, e Central Multi-Storey, and the Rooftop.
The Bridges provides over 2,000 jobs to the people of Sunderland.
History
The Bridges was opened in 1988 by The Princess Royal, and is currently owned by AEW Europe after they purchased the site from Land Securities Group in 2014.

Hanging Bridge
Hanging Bridge is a medieval bridge spanning the Hanging Ditch, which connected the rivers Irk and Irwell in Manchester, England. The first reference to the bridge was in 1343, when it was called Hengand Brigge, but the present structure was built in 1421, replacing an earlier bridge. Material taken from Manchester's Roman fort may have been used in its construction. It has been speculated that the Hanging Ditch may be of Roman origin, part of a defensive circuit between the rivers Irk and Irwell.
The name may derive from the Old English hen, meaning wild birds, and the Welsh gan, meaning between two hills. At its Irwell end, the Hanging Ditch was 120 feet (37 m) wide and 40 feet (12 m) deep. A stream flowed through the ditch, from the Irk to the Irwell – possibly the lost River Dene, which gave its name to Deansgate. The bridge has two arches and was built using sandstone from Collyhurst. It is 108 feet (33 m) long and 9 feet (2.7 m) wide. Hanging Bridge formed part of Manchester’s medieval defences, when it was the main route from Manchester to the cathedral, then a parish church.

It was built in the 17th century to connect the village of Shaharah with other villages in the area. It was also designed to be easily destroyed in case of attack by Turkish invaders. The bridge spans a 300 foot deep canyon, high up in the mountains, and is popular with both locals and tourists alike. It can be reached by climbing the many steps carved into the steep mountainside. -

The Bridge

Japan isn’t just home to big cities like Tokyo and Kyoto; it is also home to mysterious and strange places. One example is the misty West Iya Valley which is full of overgrown trees, flora, and the precarious “vine bridges”. The story of how these bridges came to be are lost to history, but what we do know is that they are made by real-life vines intertwined with planks. The bridge is sturdy but there are nearly one-foot gaps in between the planks, so if you’re a little nervous about walking on a bridge made of plants, you might want to find another way through the valley.
# 7 Hussaini Hanging Bridge
All you need to do is look at the Hussaini Hanging Bridge to understand why its so scary. It is a barely put together bridge that stretches across Borit Lake in Pakistan. With it’s sparse footing and steel wire it’s easy to see why it’s known by many as the world’s most dangerous bridge. Perhaps even scarier is the bridge right next to it which has collapsed and is treading water. It’s almost a warning that tells people not to use the bridge at all.

The Carrick-a-Rede bridge is a famous rope bridge in Northern Ireland that links the mainland Ireland to the tiny island Carrick-a-rede. It is not a very long walk at only 20 meters or 66 feet in length but levitates 98 feet above a bunch of rocks and sea waves. However, you might be nervous to cross this relatively short bridge because it is entirely made of wooden planks and rope knots.
# 5 Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge
The Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge opened in 2016, and it is a truly spine-tingling experience. The bridge is suspended 900 feet high right above the steep valley. This bridge was built so that anyone crossing it can enjoy the nature and breathtaking sights below them. But, you might be a little too nervous to take in the view as you stare down at the nearly 1,000-foot drop. The scariest part might be the fact that one of the glass panes cracked underneath the feet of the pedestrian traffic. Now, the bridge is limited to less than 800 people at a time.

The Zhangjiajie isn’t the only glass bridge in China. There’s another one known as the “Brave Men’s bridge” hanging in the Shiniuzhai National Park. Before 2014, the Brave Men’s Bridge already had a fierce reputation for being a harrowing walk. That’s when the park manager replaced the 300 meter or 980 feet long bridge just to make everything that much scarier.

In Crimea, there are these bridges that swing with the high winds of the Crimean mountains. The Ai-Petri bridge requires someone to have a gut of steel to get through. These peaks regularly experience gusts of up to 100 miles per hours many days of the year. If you can manage to cross these bridges, you will earn a beautiful view of the surrounding cities and the Black Sea.

You can take a cable car all the way to the top of the Mount Blanc Massif mountain range in France and enjoy a view of the clouds. This bridge between two peaks is very short, but because you have to take a cable car up a mountain, it’s also very high. You will have to conquer any fear of heights as this short foot bridge is 9,200 feet high.

7 – Storseisundet Bridge - The Storseisundet Bridge connects the municipalities of Norway, and it is also the longest of eight bridges that make up “The Atlantic Road” linking the mainland to the islands of the archipelago. It is 850 feet long and stands at a height of 75 feet above the water. Construction of the bridge started in 1989 and took 6 years to build, primarily due to the fact that construction was halted 12 times due to hurricanes. It cost 120 million krone, or almost $1.5 million dollars. The toll bridge was projected to recoup the capital cost to build it within 15 years, but it actually paid for itself in 10.
6 – Rakotz Bridge - The Rakotz Bridge is located in Kromlauer Park in Germany. Built in 1860, the thin, arched bridge, was commissioned by the knight of the local town and built of stone from a nearby quarry. It is known as a Devil’s Bridge, because the people thought the bridge’s sinister looking design must have been built by Satan himself. What is unique about this bridge is that its curved span was designed to form a perfect half circle, and when viewed with its reflection in the lake, appears to form a perfect circle. Visitors can still enjoy the sight of this unique bridge, but none are allowed to cross it, for fear the span may collapse.
5 - U Bein Bridge - The U Bein Bridge, named after the mayor who built it, spans Taungthaman Lake in Myanmar. It is believed to be the longest teakwood bridge in the world. Constructed in 1850, the bridge consists of 1086 pillars that support 482 separate spans that comprise the bridge’s length. The teakwood that was used in the building of the bridge was reclaimed using wood from the old royal palace in Inwa. The bridge also has 9 passageways where the wood can be removed to let barges and large boats through. Despite its age, it is still in use by both locals and tourists today.
4 – Arch Triumph – inflatable bridge - An inflatable bridge was an unusual entrant by a Paris-based architecture group, into a French competition to design a new contemporary bridge across the river Seine in Paris. This bold, yet elegant bridge was specifically designed to differentiate itself from the other 37 bridges in Paris. And the inflatable bridge is no mere footbridge – it actually makes use of giant trampolines to shuttle pedestrians to the other side. It was also designed to be temporary, like the Eiffel Tower, which was supposed to be dismantled 20 years after the 1889 World Expo. The designers of the inflatable bridge can only hope that their bridge will last as long.
3 – Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge - The Kawarau Gorge suspension bridge, located in the Otago Region of New Zealand, has an interesting claim to fame – it was the first bridge to be used as a commercial bungee jumping site. The bridge was built in 1880 to provide access to the Central Otago goldfields, but now is part of the Queentown Trail, which allows pedestrians and bikers to safely cross the Kawarau River. The bridge is still used by the AJ Hackett Bungee Company for bungee jumping and is also listed as a Category I historic place by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.

The bridge spans the Burugdi Khola River valley and was actually built for a very practical reason – to ease the congestion caused by local animal herds. While the bridge appears dangerous at first site, it has stood the test of time, and is currently still in use. Local herders and farmers use it every day to transport their goods and livestock to the local market.
