A Tory holds a political philosophy (Toryism) based on a British version of traditionalism and conservatism. In politics, the Tory political faction originated with the Cavalier faction during the English Civil War (sometimes more scrupulously known as the "Wars of the Three Kingdoms"). This political philosophy is prominent in the politics of the United Kingdom, and also appears in parts of the Commonwealth, particularly in Canada. It also had exponents in parts of the former British Empire, such as the Loyalists of British America who opposed American secession during the American War of Independence. The Tory ethos has been summed up with the phrase 'God, King and Country'. Tories generally advocate monarchism, are usually of a High Church Anglican religious heritage, and are opposed to the liberalism of the Whig faction. Under the Corn Laws (1815–1846) a majority of Tories supported protectionist agrarianism with tariffs being imposed at the time for sustainability, self-sufficiency and enhanced wages in rural employment.
Theresa Mary May (née Brasier; born 1 October 1956) is a British Conservative Party politician who has been Home Secretary of the UK since 2010.
May was first elected to Parliament in 1997 as the Member of Parliament for Maidenhead. She went on to be appointed Chairman of the Conservative Party and was sworn of Her Majesty's Most Honourable Privy Council in 2002.
She served in a number of roles in the Shadow Cabinets of William Hague, Iain Duncan Smith, Michael Howard and David Cameron, including Shadow Leader of the House of Commons and Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary.
When David Cameron became Prime Minister in 2010, May was appointed Home Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities, giving up the latter role in 2012.
Born on 1 October 1956 at Eastbourne, Sussex, May is the daughter of Hubert Brasier, an Anglican clergyman and Zaidee (née Barnes) Brasier.
May was educated at primary and grammar schools in the State sector, as well as a short spell at an independent Catholic school. She initially attended Heythrop Primary School, Oxfordshire, followed by St. Juliana's Convent School for Girls, a Roman Catholic independent school in Begbroke, which closed in 1984. At the age of 13, she won a place at the former Holton Park Girls' Grammar School in Wheatley, Oxfordshire. In 1971, the school was abolished and became the site of the new Wheatley Park Comprehensive School during her time as a pupil. May then went to the University of Oxford where she read Geography at St Hugh's College, graduating with a BA (Hons) degree in 1977.

Its sister papers include The Observer (a British Sunday paper) and The Guardian Weekly (an international roundup of articles from various papers). In addition to its UK online edition theguardian.com, the paper has two international web sites, Guardian Australia and Guardian US. The Guardian is influential in the design and publishing arena, sponsoring many awards in these areas. Other media projects include GuardianFilm. The Guardian was edited by Alan Rusbridger from 1995 to 2015, when Katharine Viner succeeded him.
The Guardian is a part of the Guardian Media Group, owned by The Scott Trust Limited. The Trust was created in 1936 "to secure the financial and editorial independence of the Guardian in perpetuity and to safeguard the journalistic freedom and liberal values of the Guardian free from commercial or political interference." The Scott Trust became a limited company in 2008, with a constitution containing the same protections for the Guardian. Profits are reinvested in journalism rather than to the benefit an owner or shareholders.

Guardian political editor Anushka Asthana goes behind the scenes on the Conservative and Labour campaign trails to scrutinise Theresa May’s bold claim that the Tories are now the party of the working class. Brexit campaigners promised voters they would have their country back, that they would take back control. But Theresa May's hardline approach is going to tear this country apart. Already the SNP's leader Nicola Sturgeon has fired the starting gun on a second Scottish independence referendum, some in Northern Ireland are agitating for an independence vote of their own and the UK is increasingly isolated from its closest neighbours, while cosying up to Donald Trump's America. All of this against a backdrop of punitive austerity, a fall in living standards and what will be the longest squeeze in wages since the Napoleonic era. Still, at least we haven't had to endure the chaos of an Ed Miliband government... Isn't that right, David Cameron? Get on it ► http://bit.ly/subscribeOJtalks Read my...
An overview of where the UKs ancient political parties - the Whigs and Tories - evolved from. The great events of the seventeenth century led to differing approaches to government and the factions that developed would dominate British politics for the centuries to come. 'Brexit means Brexit' has become a signature phrase for Theresa May since the referendum. But it wasn't so long ago that she was a part of the remain camp. The UK Independence Party, which spearheaded the Brexit campaign, was viewed by May and fellow Conservatives as too extreme. #GE2017 LIVE UPDATES: https://on.rt.com/8e0r RT LIVE http://rt.com/on-air Subscribe to RT! http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=RussiaToday Like us on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/RTnews Follow us on Twitter http://twitter.com/RT_com Follow us on Instagram http://instagram.com/rt Follow us on Google+ http://plus.google.com/+RT Listen to us on Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/rttv RT (Russia Today) is a global news network broadcasting from Moscow and Washington studios. General election 2015: Across most of post-industrial Teesside, the Conservatives face a political desert. Subscribe to The Guardian ► http://is.gd/subscribeguardian But a few doughty campaigners are trying to hold the Tory line – and even win a seat from Labour. John Harris goes door-knocking with candidates trying to push a gospel of work, self-help, home ownership and even more welfare reform, to people often cut off from politics. A few seats here could make the difference between victory and defeat – but has David Cameron really got any friends in the North?
