The Taipei Metro, more commonly known as the MRT or formally as the Taipei Rapid Transit System (Chinese: 臺北大眾捷運系統; pinyin: Táiběi Dàzhòng Jiéyùn Xìtǒng), is a rapid transit system serving metropolitan Taipei in Taiwan. The system is built by the Department of Rapid Transit Systems, Taipei City Government (DORTS-Taipei) and Department of Rapid Transit Systems, New Taipei City Government (DRTS-New Taipei) and operated by the Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation (TRTC). It consists of 108 stations (117 stations if transfer stations are double-counted) and 5 main routes, operating on 131.1 kilometres (81.5 mi) of revenue track. The system carried an average of over 1.78 million passengers per day in December 2012.
The Taipei Metro is Taiwan's first metro system. Since it first began operations in 1996, the system has been effective in relieving some of Taipei's traffic congestion problems. The system has also proved effective as a catalyst for urban renewal, as well as increasing tourist traffic to outlying towns such as Tamsui. Conversions to existing railway lines were made to integrate them into the metro system.
Taipei (/ˌtaɪˈpeɪ/, literally means "North of Tai(wan)"), officially known as Taipei City (Chinese: 臺北市 or 台北市; pinyin: Táiběi Shì; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Tâi-pak Chhī), is the capital city and a special municipality of Taiwan. Sitting at the northern tip of Taiwan, Taipei City is an enclave of the municipality of New Taipei City. It is about 25 km (16 mi) southwest of the northern port city Keelung. The city is mostly located on the Taipei Basin, an ancient lakebed bounded by the two relatively narrow valleys of the Keelung and Xindian rivers, which join to form the Tamsui River along the city's western border.
The city proper is home to an estimated population of 2,693,672 in 2009, forming the core part of the Taipei–Keelung metropolitan area which includes the nearby cities of New Taipei and Keelung with a population of 6,900,273, the 40th most-populous urban area in the world. The name "Taipei" can refer either to the whole metropolitan area or the city proper.
Taipei is the political, economic, educational, and cultural center of Taiwan, and one of the major hubs of the Chinese-speaking world. Considered to be a global city, Taipei is part of a major high-tech industrial area.Railways, high-speed rail, highways, airports, and bus lines connect Taipei with all parts of the island. The city is served by two airports – Taipei Songshan and Taiwan Taoyuan. Taipei is home to various world-famous architectural or cultural landmarks which include Taipei 101, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, Dalongdong Baoan Temple, Hsing Tian Kong, Mengjia Longshan Temple, National Palace Museum, Presidential Office Building, Taipei Guest House, Ximending, and several night markets dispersing over the city. Its natural features such as Maokong, Yangmingshan, and hot springs are also well known to international visitors.

This is a quick video that show you some highlights of the best metro system that I've ever been on, the Taipei Metro MRT. The underground subway system covers most of the city. It's convenient, clean, inexpensive, and efficient. Compared to other mass transit systems, Taipei Metro feels luxurious. It may be the best public transit system in the world. Taipei, Taiwan has one of the most efficient and reliable MRT or public rapid transit systems in the world. Locals are used to the convenience but if you are visiting either for a short or extended time to Taipei you are in store for a comfortable, safe, and easy way to get around the city. There are 5 main lines of the Taipei Metro which consists of a mix of underground and above ground infrastructure with a total of 108 stations. This does not include the airport service as this is a separate entity called Taoyuan MRT. I highly recommend downloading either the IOS or android Taipei MRT app available in The App Store and Google Play. This will help you plan your day while you’re having a coffee in your hotel room or at breakfast. All of the stations are also searchable online with full...
I had the honor to join the trial runs of the new Taipei - Taoyuan Airport MRT line. As I really needed to get to the airport from the city on February 18th 2017, I queued early morning in the long line at Taipei main station to wait for my free ticket. At about 2pm I boarded the train on Taipei Central Station. This magnificent metro line starts underground, and then emerges above ground to elevated tracks. The metro train then climbs a steep slope through beautiful forested hills to Linkou Plateau where it enters a tunnel again. During the rest of the trip till the airport, nice paddies in the country side are seen around.
