WHAT WOULD RAISING NEWSTART BY $100 PER WEEK MEAN FOR YOU?

“When I was on Newstart $100 more a week would have meant we could afford asthma medication instead of just using meditation (true story) when we had an attack...this is me and the kids. It might have meant I could get clothes suitable for a job interview. It might have meant buying pens and paper and exercise books for school instead of begging off people. So yeah, a few things would have been better. $100 more for some of my friends now would mean eating every meal. Yep, it is that bad now for some people. It would not just mean healthier food, it would mean food once a day or more. It would mean enough petrol to be able to drive where they need to go too.” - Amy.

****Job Agency Fight-Back Day - Saturday June 17th****

"People assume that those on Centrelink spend their money on rubbish!! That however is not true. I have 4 children and a house that I rent for $350 a week (the rent has been raised three times since I have been living there). I would love to move but who has the money to do that?

I do a budget every week to make sure I can pay my bills and still have enough so my kids can do school things that may come up, not to mention paying school fees. My kids do not get tuck shop because I simply cannot afford it, they do not get brand name food for school food, their school uniforms I look for online. Everything I buy is put on lay buy. I go out to dinner maybe once every 6 months, I do not drink unless it's X-mas day and I do not smoke I don't gamble either.

I have voluntarily joined a job network who seems to not be interested in helping me to obtain work at all. I'm there for all of 5 minutes and they send me off. I have applied for countless jobs and I have maybe had one call back for a job I didn’t get. I'm currently studying online in the hope it helps me get work before I'm put on Newstart. I struggle as it is to get by and if I was put on Newstart I actually wouldn't be able to afford the house I live in. The thing is that while some people may be abusing the system, most of us are not." - LINDA
