Next morning I set off for an hour trip to Abbaye Villers-la-Ville, a former abbey from the 13th century now in ruins, but still stands tall and beautiful. It is MASSIVE and is a must see in Walloon. My evening ended in the not so pretty former industrial city of Charleroi. There is no tourism and the city reminded me of Newark, New Jersey. Some locals I spoke with are not too proud of the bad reputation of the city and I saw why. But Charleroi is the perfect place for urban exploration and too see some abandoned places. The one place I saw was the IM power plant tower, a lonesome tower that you can walk into that is incredibly surreal and made Charleroi perfect for a night stay.
Next city was Namur where I Couchsurfed for the first time during this trip. I had the pleasure of walking around the city, river, and up the citadel that overlooks the split of the rivers, city and beyond. One thing that is incredible about this city is that it is a city, but farmlands exist so close in the horizon. It was gorgeous. Most of the trip I had a beer or two in different places to try beer. But I hadn't actually really DRANK heavy since my bon voyage party a week before departure. With my hosts, we went to a local college bar and downed plenty of brews, had good chats, played foosball, and had a great time. Don't ask about my hangover the next day.
4 hours of sleep without a shower and a migraine later, I set off for Dinant where my next hosts a Belgian travel couple picked me up and drove me to their beautiful home on the Meuse river next to a church. Every BNB should have a host that loves what they do and care for their guests. This place really defined that, as they were possibly the nicest people I've ever met. I loved them! The rest of the day I walked around Dinant and both sides of the bank and up the citadel to get nice pan ams of the city. The city was also destroyed and attacked by Germany during WW1, a part of history that fascinates me incredibly. On top of that, i am ther 102 years since that war. Next day was a rough day for me but I saw a castle, an abandoned home/castle and bike around some gorgeous countryside.
Throughout the 2 weeks spent in this country, I've met some amazing people, tasted some incredible brews, ate delicious Belgian waffles (Which I understood are mostly from Liege), learned some important French words, understood the concept of kissing on the cheek with other men, and enjoyed some Belgian chocolate. Best of, I am happy to have spent half of the country with someone. Onto Luxembourg… to be continued. :)

Now for our Europinion segment we go to Belgium. After the latest round of elections held there in June, negotiations on forming a Belgian government have stranded because of ongoing tensions between French speaking and Dutch speaking politicians. Some French-speaking Wallonian politicians have already stated that separating Belgium into an independent Flanders and Wallonia might be the only way to solve the problem. We went to the city of St. Truiden and asked people on the streets for their opinion.
"I think that would be a good idea. Then all that fighting would be over."
"I just read an article about it. I'm not in favor. I still feel Belgian."
"It'll have its positive and negative sides for the Flemish, as well as for the people of Wallonia."
"That's a good idea. They can't reach an agreement anyway."
"We have a Flemish Government. Let them take care of things here in Flanders and let the government in Wallonia do the same on their side. Then that problem in Brussels will be solved immediately."
"I have nothing against the people of Wallonia, only against the politicians. So that's my opinion."
"Something has to be done anyway. They've been negotiating for 90 days already. They didn't get one step further. Nothing."
"I think they are going a little too far now. That's not doing politics anymore, that's attacking each other."
"Forming a government with seven different parties, that' impossible anyway. That means seven different ideas."
"They're fighting with each other and after that they drink coffee together. That's the Belgian mentality. And when you look at their paycheck, then you know why they are doing politics."

Wallonia
Wallonia (French: Wallonie [walɔni], German: Wallonie(n), Dutch: Wallonië [ʋaːˈloːni.ə], Walloon: Walonreye Walloon pronunciation: [walɔ̃ʀɛjɜ]; Luxembourgish: Wallounesch) is a region of Belgium. It is predominantly French-speaking. It accounts for 55% of the territory of Belgium and a third of its population. Unlike Flanders, the Walloon Region was not merged with the French Community of Belgium which is the political entity that is responsible for matters related mainly to culture and education. The German-speaking minority in the east forms the German-speaking Community of Belgium, which has its own government and parliament for culture-related issues. The demonym for Wallonia is Walloon.
During the industrial revolution, Wallonia was second only to the United Kingdom in industrialization, capitalizing on its extensive deposits of coal and iron. This brought the region wealth, and, from the beginning of the 19th to the middle of the 20th centuries, Wallonia was the more prosperous half of Belgium. Since World War II the importance of heavy industry has greatly declined, and the Flemish Region surpassed Wallonia in wealth as Wallonia economically declined. Wallonia now suffers from high unemployment and has a significantly lower GDP per capita than Flanders. The economic inequalities and linguistic divide between the two are major sources of political conflict in Belgium.

Next morning I set off for an hour trip to Abbaye Villers-la-Ville, a former abbey from the 13th century now in ruins, but still stands tall and beautiful. It is MASSIVE and is a must see in Walloon. My evening ended in the not so pretty former industrial city of Charleroi. There is no tourism and the city reminded me of Newark, New Jersey. Some locals I spoke with are not too proud of the bad reputation of the city and I saw why. But Charleroi is the perfect place for urban exploration and too see some abandoned places. The one place I saw was the IM power plant tower, a lonesome tower that you can walk into that is incredibly surreal and made Charleroi perfect for a night stay.
Next city was Namur where I Couchsurfed for the first time during this trip. I had the pleasure of walking around the city, river, and up the citadel that overlooks the split of the rivers, city and beyond. One thing that is incredible about this city is that it is a city, but farmlands exist so close in the horizon. It was gorgeous. Most of the trip I had a beer or two in different places to try beer. But I hadn't actually really DRANK heavy since my bon voyage party a week before departure. With my hosts, we went to a local college bar and downed plenty of brews, had good chats, played foosball, and had a great time. Don't ask about my hangover the next day.
4 hours of sleep without a shower and a migraine later, I set off for Dinant where my next hosts a Belgian travel couple picked me up and drove me to their beautiful home on the Meuse river next to a church. Every BNB should have a host that loves what they do and care for their guests. This place really defined that, as they were possibly the nicest people I've ever met. I loved them! The rest of the day I walked around Dinant and both sides of the bank and up the citadel to get nice pan ams of the city. The city was also destroyed and attacked by Germany during WW1, a part of history that fascinates me incredibly. On top of that, i am ther 102 years since that war. Next day was a rough day for me but I saw a castle, an abandoned home/castle and bike around some gorgeous countryside.
Throughout the 2 weeks spent in this country, I've met some amazing people, tasted some incredible brews, ate delicious Belgian waffles (Which I understood are mostly from Liege), learned some important French words, understood the concept of kissing on the cheek with other men, and enjoyed some Belgian chocolate. Best of, I am happy to have spent half of the country with someone. Onto Luxembourg… to be continued. :)

Now for our Europinion segment we go to Belgium. After the latest round of elections held there in June, negotiations on forming a Belgian government have stranded because of ongoing tensions between French speaking and Dutch speaking politicians. Some French-speaking Wallonian politicians have already stated that separating Belgium into an independent Flanders and Wallonia might be the only way to solve the problem. We went to the city of St. Truiden and asked people on the streets for their opinion.
"I think that would be a good idea. Then all that fighting would be over."
"I just read an article about it. I'm not in favor. I still feel Belgian."
"It'll have its positive and negative sides for the Flemish, as well as for the people of Wallonia."
"That's a good idea. They can't reach an agreement anyway."
"We have a Flemish Government. Let them take care of things here in Flanders and let the government in Wallonia do the same on their side. Then that problem in Brussels will be solved immediately."
"I have nothing against the people of Wallonia, only against the politicians. So that's my opinion."
"Something has to be done anyway. They've been negotiating for 90 days already. They didn't get one step further. Nothing."
"I think they are going a little too far now. That's not doing politics anymore, that's attacking each other."
"Forming a government with seven different parties, that' impossible anyway. That means seven different ideas."
"They're fighting with each other and after that they drink coffee together. That's the Belgian mentality. And when you look at their paycheck, then you know why they are doing politics."
"I think in other countries, they're laughing about what's happening in Belgium now. Don't you think so?"
"We're already such a small country. We have a beautiful little country. Why would we separate? We have three languages. Which country can say that."
"I think we need each other. People from Wallonia need people from Flanders and vice versa. It wouldn't be a good idea to separate."
"We're living a very good live here in Belgium. Let us stay together."
"I think we need each other, but we need to learn how to be tolerant. I think that's really important."

Belgian Tourist Office-Brussels & Wallonia stand at WTM 2013
In 2013 French-speaking Belgium for the first time had a separate stand at WTM. It was joined by 20 different attractions, local tourist offices and partners. In 2014 the destination will be marking the centenary of the outbreak of WW1. While the town of Liege was the first in Belgium to be attacked, the town of Mons saw the very first battle between the British and the German forces. The Mons Region Tourist Board was providing further information about planned commemorations there, but also on its UNESCO sites, and on Mons 2015, when it will be European Capital of Culture. The town of Comines-Warneton was also presenting its new attraction Plugstreet Experience 14-18, a WW1 interpretation centre which opened on 9 November 2013 2014 will also see the 70th anniversary of the Liberatio...

Next morning I set off for an hour trip to Abbaye Villers-la-Ville, a former abbey from the 13th century now in ruins, but still stands tall and beautiful. It is MASSIVE and is a must see in Walloon. My evening ended in the not so pretty former industrial city of Charleroi. There is no tourism and the city reminded me of Newark, New Jersey. Some locals I spoke with are not too proud of the bad reputation of the city and I saw why. But Charleroi is the perfect place for urban exploration and too see some abandoned places. The one place I saw was the IM power plant tower, a lonesome tower that you can walk into that is incredibly surreal and made Charleroi perfect for a night stay.
Next city was Namur where I Couchsurfed for the first time during this trip. I had the pleasure of walking around the city, river, and up the citadel that overlooks the split of the rivers, city and beyond. One thing that is incredible about this city is that it is a city, but farmlands exist so close in the horizon. It was gorgeous. Most of the trip I had a beer or two in different places to try beer. But I hadn't actually really DRANK heavy since my bon voyage party a week before departure. With my hosts, we went to a local college bar and downed plenty of brews, had good chats, played foosball, and had a great time. Don't ask about my hangover the next day.
4 hours of sleep without a shower and a migraine later, I set off for Dinant where my next hosts a Belgian travel couple picked me up and drove me to their beautiful home on the Meuse river next to a church. Every BNB should have a host that loves what they do and care for their guests. This place really defined that, as they were possibly the nicest people I've ever met. I loved them! The rest of the day I walked around Dinant and both sides of the bank and up the citadel to get nice pan ams of the city. The city was also destroyed and attacked by Germany during WW1, a part of history that fascinates me incredibly. On top of that, i am ther 102 years since that war. Next day was a rough day for me but I saw a castle, an abandoned home/castle and bike around some gorgeous countryside.
Throughout the 2 weeks spent in this country, I've met some amazing people, tasted some incredible brews, ate delicious Belgian waffles (Which I understood are mostly from Liege), learned some important French words, understood the concept of kissing on the cheek with other men, and enjoyed some Belgian chocolate. Best of, I am happy to have spent half of the country with someone. Onto Luxembourg… to be continued. :)

2014 will also see the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of Brussels, and the 70th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. A new museum dedicated to WW2 will be opening in Bastogne in spring 2014 and the first map of the Battle of the Bulge is being produced by the Belgian Luxembourg and Ardennes Tourist Board who was presenting its new 2014 brochure with all the must-see attractions including the discovery trail for the famous Orval Trappist beer.
Looking beyond, 2015 will commemorate 200 years since Wellington's victory over Napoleon at The Battle of Waterloo. A memorial and a great re-enactment will be the opportunity to discover the best preserved battlefield in Europe. Further information was available on the stand from the Waterloo Tourist Office.
The Caves of Han, among the most spectacular in Belgium were also represented. They will be seeing the addition of a stunning new chamber, and a new state-of-the-art lighting system in th near future as well as new walking trails.
The Youth Hostels in Belgium were on hand to explain the significant renovation work that has been undertaken to make their hostels some of the greenest in Belgium with five Youth Hostels already certified Green Key in Brussels and Wallonia.
A number of Brussels Museums also attended WTM including the Royal Museums of Art & History, the Musical Instruments Museum, the Royal Museums of Natural Sciences and the Royal Museums of Fine arts of Belgium which will see the opening in December 2013 of a new museum entirely dedicated to the 19th century.
The Atomium and Mini Europe in Brussels, and the Eurospace Center in Wallonia were also exhibiting as was Brussels Guided Tours, the Crowne Plaza Liege, Floreal la Roche holidays, The Hotel Spa Balmoral, Ibis Hotels Belgium and the Province of Namur- land of the Valleys- and the Province of Liège.
And of course our famous Belgian bar, sponsored by Chez Léon de Bruxelles, was still as popular as ever!!
