Cooper Island is a small island, 2 miles (3.2 km) long, which lies at the north side of the entrance to Drygalski Fjord, off the southeast end of South Georgia. It was discovered by a British expedition under James Cook in 1775, and named for Lieutenant Robert Palliser Cooper, an officer aboard HMS Resolution.
A navigable channel, Cooper Sound, nearly 1 mile (1.6 km) wide, separates Cooper Island from the coast of the main island of South Georgia. There is a small bay, Cooper Bay, 1.3 miles (2.1 km) southwest of Cape Vahsel on the mainland, and 1 mile (1.6 km) northwest of Cooper Island, indenting the southeast end of South Georgia, which derives its name from Cooper Island.
The island reaches 416 metres (1,365 ft) at its highest point, and the upper parts of the island are above the snow line.
As one of a handful of rat-free islands, Cooper Island is South Georgia's only Special Protection Area, it has large numbers of sea birds including snow petrels, Antarctic prions, 12,000 pairs of black-browed albatross, chinstrap penguins and 20,000 macaroni penguins. There are also a number of fur seals and this is one of the few places where they were not hunted by humans.
An island /ˈaɪlənd/ or isle /ˈaɪl/ is any piece of sub-continental land that is surrounded by water. Very small islands such as emergent land features on atolls can be called islets, skerries, cays or keys. An island in a river or a lake island may be called an eyot or ait, or a holm. A grouping of geographically or geologically related islands is called an archipelago, e.g. the Philippines.
An island may be described as such despite the presence of an artificial land bridge, for example Singapore and its causeway, or the various Dutch delta islands, such as IJsselmonde. Some places may even retain "island" in their names for historical reasons after being connected to a larger landmass by a wide land bridge, such as Coney Island or Coronado Island. Conversely, when a piece of land is separated from the mainland by a man-made canal, for example the Peloponnese by the Corinth Canal, it is generally not considered an island.
There are two main types of islands: continental islands and oceanic islands. There are also artificial islands.
The Virgin Islands are the western island group of the Leeward Islands, which are the northern part of the Lesser Antilles, and form the border between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Politically, the eastern islands form the British Virgin Islands and the western ones form the United States Virgin Islands. The British Virgin Islands is an overseas territory of the United Kingdom comprising approximately 60 islands and cays including Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, and Anegada.
The U.S. Virgin Islands is one of five inhabited insular areas of the United States, along with American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, and Puerto Rico. The territory comprises a number of islands including St. Croix, St. John, St. Thomas and Water Island.
The Virgin Passage separates the American Virgin Islands from the so-called Spanish Virgin Islands of Vieques and Culebra, which are part of Puerto Rico. The United States dollar is the official currency on both the British and American Virgin Islands as well as the Spanish/Puerto Rican Virgin Islands.
Cooper may refer to :
Norman Island is an island located at the southern tip of the British Virgin Islands archipelago. It is one of a number of islands reputed to be the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's pirate novel Treasure Island.
It is said that the island was named after a pirate who bought it or leased it at some point during the early 18th century, although supporting evidence for this contention is difficult to find.
However, Norman Island also has a documented history of pirate booty being stowed upon the island. In August 1750, a Spanish treasure galleon named Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe sought shelter from a storm on the North Carolina coast. The crew mutinied and the treasure, said to consist of (amongst other things) 55 chests of silver coins, was loaded into two bilanders, one of which was manned by Owen Lloyd. The first vessel perished, but Lloyd escaped to St. Croix. After disposing of some of the money, he proceeded to Norman Island where the treasure was buried. Lloyd and his crew were later arrested in St. Eustatius, but word of the treasure spread, and residents of Tortola went to Norman Island and dug it up for themselves. Part of the booty was later recovered by Gilbert Fleming, Lieutenant-General of the Leeward Islands at the time, who travelled to Tortola with two companies of soldiers. Fleming persuaded Abraham Chalwill, the acting Lieutenant Governor of the British Virgin Islands (who had coincidentally lead the search for the treasure on Norman Island) to issue a proclamation whereby the treasure would be returned and the people who had dug it up would receive a one-third share as a reward.
A brief afternoon day trip to this elegant eco-resort, and we didn't want to leave. We leaned that much of their food is grown on-site and the majority of their power is generated via roof-top solar panels. The food was great, the staff were friendly, and the setting was as beautiful as any in the British Virgin Islands. All footage was filmed with a GoPro Hero 4 mounted to a Feiyu-Tech G4 gimbal. Music by Tony Anderson.
It was time to finally put our ASA 101, 103, & 104 certifications from the previous summer up to the test. We flew into St. Thomas Airport in the US Virgin Islands, cleared customs, then took a ferry to Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. We rented a 39 foot sailboat from Wickhams Cay 2 on Tortola and set sail the following morning. Our sail plan was as follows: Day 1: Tortola to Cooper Island Day 2: Cooper Island to Saba Rock Day 3: Saba Rock to Marina Cay Day 4: Marina Cay to Jost Van Dyke Day 5: Jost Van Dyke, relax and scuba dive Day 6: Jost Van Dyke to Norman Island Day 7: Norman Island to Wickhams Cay II, Tortola This was our final vacation, as we would be heading back to New York City to prepare to resign from our jobs, sell all of our stuff, and begin our journey of traveling ...

Travel video about destination Jeju Island in South Korea. Around a hundred kilometres off South Korea’s southern coast and lapped by the waves of the East China Sea is Jeju Island, an extraordinary holiday paradise situated on a volcanic island with temples, waterfalls, tee plantations and several leisure facilities. In the middle of the north coast is Jeju-Si, the island’s capital city. The first thing that catches the eye is Yongduam Rock that is situated on the city’s western periphery. It is an unusual lava formation that resembles a dragon’s head. The National Museum features the island’s history and culture including the clothing of the first settlers and the boats that first brought them to the island. The nearby fishing village of Haenyed boasts a special attraction, the island’s ...
Next time you’re ready to walk through nature, pay a visit to Jeju-do Island. This small enclave, located about 55 miles off the coast of South Korea, is remembered in history as “The Island of the Gods.” You’ll see why it has this nickname when you embark on a Jeju-do Island tour, and wander through its many natural wonders. Spend some time at the exquisite Cheonjiyeon Waterfall, or walk through the miles of paths that run along the coastline for a breath of fresh oceanic air. You can also spend hours in the Bijarim Forest, surrounded by ancient trees that reach over 80 feet into the sky. Jeju-do Island sightseeing isn’t just about the flora and fauna, though. You can let your imagination run wild at the Trick Art Museum, or remember simpler days in childhood at the Teddy Bear Museum. I...

A lot of people were wondering why I stayed so long in Jeju and I also kept it secret from most people. I didn't want them to ask me about what happened when I got back because I planned on not doing much other than a lot of soul searching and resting. But what happened there and all that I learned from this experience...even I wasn't prepared for. ▶ Want to Teach in Korea?! Get a 120 Hr TEFL Certificate! This HD video documentary reveals how Easter Island's Moai statues were constructed by experimenting with ancient engineering methods and mysterious traditions, modern archaeological scientists and engineers try and recreate and decipher their secrets. The statues are carved stone human figures with over-sized heads, often resting on massive rock platforms called ahus buried underground. There are 1,000 statues that exist on the island, 30 feet tall, weighing a colossal 75 tons and are scattered about the barren landscape, in the mountains and close to the ocean. Society and tradition was tribal and a primitive culture, with black magic religious priests, chieftains writing strange hieroglyphic writing languages known as rongorongo. Yet this culture built monolithic statues not unlike Euro...
