The Nuns was a punk rock/new wave and gothic rock band in San Francisco and New York City. Best known as one of the founding acts of the early San Francisco punk scene, the band went through a number of hiatuses and periodic reunions, lineup changes, and changes in style. Overall, The Nuns performed and recorded on and off from the mid-1970s into the 2000s. While the band was centered on Jennifer Miro and Jeff Olener through its various incarnations, Alejandro Escovedo, who went on to later success as an Americana and alternative country musician, was also a key member during its years of fame in late 1970s San Francisco.
The band formed in 1975 in Marin County, California when Alejandro Escovedo and Jeff Olener, who were film students at College of Marin, wanted to make a low-budget film about a strung-out rock singer and a band that could not play its instruments, and decided to play the part themselves. This project evolved into The Nuns. While the band was in its formative phase, they practiced in a warehouse in Terra Linda. Jennifer Miro (nee Jennifer R. Anderson), who was in a Mill Valley-based band that covered Doobie Brothers songs, practiced at the same warehouse. Olener soon invited Miro to join his band; Miro, who was unhappy with the band she was in, jumped at the opportunity.
Audrey Hepburn (/ˈɔːdri ˈhɛpˌbɜːrn/; born Audrey Kathleen Ruston; 4 May 1929 – 20 January 1993) was a British actress and humanitarian. Recognised as a film and fashion icon, Hepburn was active during Hollywood's Golden Age. She was ranked by the American Film Institute as the third greatest female screen legend in Golden Age Hollywood and was inducted into the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame. Born in Ixelles, a district of Brussels, Hepburn spent her childhood between Belgium, England, and the Netherlands, including German-occupied Arnhem during the Second World War where she worked as a courier for the Dutch resistance and assisted with fundraising. In Amsterdam, she studied ballet with Sonia Gaskell before moving to London in 1948 to continue her ballet training with Marie Rambert and perform as a chorus girl in West End musical theatre productions. She spoke several languages, including English, French, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, and German.
Frederick George Peter Ingle Finch (28 September 1916 – 14 January 1977) was an English-born Australian actor. He is best remembered for his role as "crazed" television anchorman Howard Beale in the film Network, which earned him a posthumous Academy Award for Best Actor, his fifth Best Actor award from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, and a Best Actor award from the Golden Globes. He was the first person to win a posthumous Academy Award in an acting category.
Finch was born as Frederick George Peter Ingle Finch in London to Alicia Gladys Fisher. At the time, Alicia was married to George Finch. George Finch was born in New South Wales, Australia, but was educated in Paris and Zürich. He was a research chemist when he moved to Britain in 1912 and later served during the First World War with the Royal Army Ordnance Depot and the Royal Field Artillery. In 1915, at Portsmouth, Hampshire, George married Alicia Fisher, the daughter of a Kent barrister. However, George Finch was not Peter Finch's biological father. He learned only in his mid-40s that his biological father was Wentworth Edward Dallas "Jock" Campbell, an Indian Army officer, whose adultery with Finch's mother was the cause of George and Alicia's divorce, when Peter was two years old. Alicia Finch married "Jock" Campbell in 1922.

Excellent Stooges cover from one of my favourite Punk bands ever, San Francisco's own The Nuns! Recorded live at Mabuhay Gardens back in the day and later released on a bootleg LP called, appropriately enough, "Gimme Danger" on Out Of Darkness records. Much rawer and closer to the original band's spirit than their official, more polished debut album on Posh Boy. Jennifer Miro - Piano, Vocals; Alejandro Escovedo - Guitar; Jeff Raphael - Drums; Jeff Olener - Vocals; Richie Detrick - Vocals; Pat Ryan - Bass.

Another old C4 video once-thought-lost. Not much to say about this one. It was filmed at the Royal Garden Hotel, in Kensington, I think. The track is from the Distortion album. I remember there were quite a few takes because Stephin wasn't very happy with how he was singing it.
This was Joan's farewell concert to Melbourne, and it included quite a lot of wonderful items from the world of operetta. Douglas Gamley conducted. In "The Nuns' Chorus", all of the house lights were turned off at the start and Joan, dressed as pictured, was illuminated by a single spot in the vastness of the Melbourne Concert Hall. Talk about an incredible moment. Then, of course, she filled the hall with that trademark sound of hers - opulent and soaring. She was 63 at the time.

Ani Choying Drolma, the founder of the Nuns Welfare Foundation of Nepal, was born in 1971 in Nepal. At the age of 13, she joined Nagi Gompa, a Buddhist nunnery on Shivapuri Mountain on the northern slope of the Kathmandu valley. Her education and spiritual training was supervised by the renowned meditation master, Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche. She was educated in Buddhist meditation, chants, rituals and ceremonies and quickly advanced to the position of the chanting master in the nunnery. Singing plays a very important part in our life since we have the responsibility of singing seven times a day and once a night and this takes up around five hours of our time, every day. It inspires our pray and it is important for us what we sing, as it is for God for whom we are singing. The most important thing in prayer and song is for us to abandon our own feelings and focus on the fact that we are singing for God. I would say ....that we are not looking for a means of escape. We are seeking to abandon ourselves rather than avoiding those, often very difficult, things that God asks of us. I would say that yes, it is a form of escape but in the same way that it allows us to escape from ourselves, to come out of ourselves. I think the worst imprisonment is to be imprisoned within ones...

And in a time that's closer
Life will be even bolder then
Souls will be complicated
Life will be consummated then
Hearts will be brought together
Soon in our minds forever then
As long as we see
There's only us who can change it
Only us to rearrange it
At the start of a new kind of day
Love is the only answer
Hate is the root of cancer then
Truth is just for the being
And there's the sight for seeing then
Thoughts will be thought together
Soon in our minds forever then
As long as we see
There's only us who can change it
Only us to rearrange it
At the start of a new kind of day
And in a time that's closer
Life will be even bolder then
Love is the only answer
Hate is the root of cancer then
