A favourite with young professionals, Surry Hills has come into its own in recent years, with an influx of wine bars, cafes and top-notch restaurants cementing the suburb’s credibility with the city’s trend-spotters.

The suburb’s gay-friendly vibe goes hand in hand with the hip boutiques, fashionable furniture outlets and art galleries and Crown Street is bursting at the seams with eating options. Construction is underway on a new light rail line linking Surry Hills to Circular Quay to the north and Kingsford and Randwick to the south, with completion anticipated in 2020. But it’s not difficult to imagine life without a car here: most amenities are within easy walking distance, including Central Station, Hyde Park, Chinatown and Darling Harbour.

Local agents have noted increased interest from an older demographic buying property for their super funds and are also fielding enquiries from Paddington buyers looking for better value and a more vibrant neighbourhood. Housing choices include terraces, warehouse conversions and new apartments.
