Birth name: Jimmy Ray Dean
Birth place: Plainview, Texas
Place of death: Varina, Virginia (at 81 years old)
Per the notes written on the back of the JIMMY DEAN: BIG BAD JOHN AND OTHER FABULOUS SONGS AND TALES (Columbia LP #CL 1735) record jacket, it states: "Jimmy Dean had been thinking for some time of writing a song about a Paul Bunyan-like hero. He began writing the lyrics at home, but never quite finished them, because he had to fly to Nashville, Tennessee for a recording session with veteran Columbia producer, Don Law. Jimmy simply brought along the unfinished song. By the time he got off the plane, he was virtually jumping with excitement. The song was completed and Don Law liked it so much, that Big Bad John was recorded immediately" -
(Side note: There's a little touch of "Sixteen Tons" by Tennessee Ernie Ford here as well) -
Note: What many today call, "rapping" was originally, in a cleaner form, referred to as, "calling". Talking in rhyming sentences or speaking the lyrics instead of singing them, which was very common in Country & Western music. It began with the square dance "caller" who gave direction to the dancers, through rhyming sentences set to the cadence or beat of the music being played by a live band. He never sang, he just spoke the words in rhyme. Much the same as a auction house auctioneer, who speaks the bids in a fast rhythm, choosing words which often rhyme. The "caller" and the dance can be: "traced back through England to the old French cotillions" (17th century) (per Lloyd Shaw-1939).
Also, a form of "calling" or "auction house crying" can be found in the 1947 recording of, "Smoke, Smoke, Smoke (That Cigarette) (Tex Williams & Phil Harris) or "The Darktown Poker Club" (1946) (Phil Harris) for example, and many other older recordings. Therefore, "rap" isn't new, it's just a continuation of something which started many years earlier.

Jimmy Dean
Jimmy Ray Dean (August 10, 1928 – June 13, 2010) was an American country music singer, television host, actor and businessman. Although he may be best known today as the creator of the Jimmy Dean sausage brand, he became a national television personality starting on CBS in 1957. He rose to fame for his 1961 country crossover hit "Big Bad John" and his 1963 ABC television series, The Jimmy Dean Show, which also gave puppeteer Jim Henson his first national media exposure. His acting career included a supporting role as Willard Whyte in the 1971 James Bond movie, Diamonds Are Forever. He lived near Richmond, Virginia, and was nominated for the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2010, although he was formally inducted posthumously.
Biography
Early life
Dean was born in Plainview in Hale County in West Texas in 1928, the son of George Otto Dean, and his second wife, the former Ruth Taylor. He attributed his interest in music to the Seth Ward Baptist Church. He dropped out of high school and became a professional entertainer after serving in the United States Air Force in the late 1940s. Dean was 22 and just starting in show business when he married his first wife Mary Sue (Sue) in 1950.

Big Bad John
"Big Bad John" is a country song originally performed by Jimmy Dean and composed by Dean and Roy Acuff. Released in September 1961, by the beginning of November it went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and won Dean the 1962 Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Recording. The song and its sequels tell a story typical of American folklore, reminiscent of Paul Bunyan or John Henry. Big Bad John was also the title of a 1990 television movie starring Dean.
Story
The song tells the story of a mysterious and quiet miner who earned the nickname Big John because of his height, weight, and muscular physique ("He stood six foot six and weighed two forty-five"). He supposedly came from New Orleans, where he killed a man over a Cajun Queen.
One day, a support timber cracked at the mine where John worked. The situation looked hopeless until John "grabbed a saggin' timber, gave out with a groan / and like a giant oak tree just stood there alone", then "gave a mighty shove", opening a passage and allowing the 20 other miners to escape the mine. Although the miners were about to re-enter the mine with the tools necessary to save him, the mine fully collapsed and John was believed to have died in the depths of the mine. The mine itself was never reopened, but a marble stand was placed in front of it, with the words "At the bottom of this mine lies one hell of a man – Big John". (Some versions of the song change the last line to "lies a big, big man" to replace what was at the time considered to be borderline profane language.)

On behalf of Adformatie, the Dutch advertising trade magazine, Nils Adriaans approached Ambassadors to team up for a creative piece on John Mescall’s 8 inspirational sources. In started off as a simple interview between Adriaans and Mescall, who is the creative director for ‘Dumb ways to die’, but accelerated into a printed 8-page section and animated short film to accompany the story. Per the notes written on the back of the JIMMY DEAN: BIG BAD JOHN AND OTHER FABULOUS SONGS AND TALES (Columbia LP #CL 1735) record jacket, it states: "Jimmy Dean had been thinking for some time of writing a song about a Paul Bunyan-like hero. He began writing the lyrics at home, but never quite finished them, because he had to fly to Nashville, Tennessee for a recording session with veteran Columbia producer, Don Law. Jimmy simply brought along the unfinished song. By the time he got off the plane, he was virtually jumping with excitement. The song was completed and Don Law liked it so much, that Big Bad John was recorded immediately" -
(Side note: There's a little touch of "Sixteen Tons" by Tennessee Ernie Ford here as well) -
Note: What many today call, "rapping" was originally, in a cleaner form, referred to as, "calling". Talking in rhyming sentences or speaking the lyrics instead of singing them, which was very common in Country & Western music. It began with the square dance "caller" who gave direction to the dancers, through rhyming sentences set to the cadence or beat of the music being played by a live band. He never sang, he just spoke the words in rhyme. Much the same as a auction house auctioneer, who speaks the bids in a fast rhythm, choosing words which often rhyme. The "caller" and the dance can be: "traced back through England to the old French cotillions" (17th century) (per Lloyd Shaw-1939).
Also, a form of "calling" or "auction house crying" can be found in the 1947 recording of, "Smoke, Smoke, Smoke (That Cigarette) (Tex Williams & Phil Harris) or "The Darktown Poker Club" (1946) (Phil Harris) for example, and many other older recordings. Therefore, "rap" isn't new, it's just a continuation of something which started many years earlier.

On behalf of Adformatie, the Dutch advertising trade magazine, Nils Adriaans approached Ambassadors to team up for a creative piece on John Mescall’s 8 inspirat...
On behalf of Adformatie, the Dutch advertising trade magazine, Nils Adriaans approached Ambassadors to team up for a creative piece on John Mescall’s 8 inspirational sources. In started off as a simple interview between Adriaans and Mescall, who is the creative director for ‘Dumb ways to die’, but accelerated into a printed 8-page section and animated short film to accompany the story.
Adriaans: “First of all, John was really cooperative – a big thanks goes out to McCann New York (where Mescall works as Global Executive Creative Director and Global Creative Council President at McCann Worldgroup). Second of all Ambassadors took it home big time, both creatively and production wise. The whole project felt like a gift.’
Mescall’ story came to life using a voice-over and there is no better person than himself to record his own words. His calm, Australian accent becomes a strong inspiration and sets the tone for the rest of the project.
“From that moment on it became a team effort, says Vincent Lammers, head of Design & Animation, using up every spare moment to design and animate every aspect of the short film. All designers were given complete freedom to experiment based on the given interview script, which resulted in almost 20 different approaches. So for every chapter we adopted a specific style using either paper animations, 3D animations, pencil animations and a lot more making it a showcase
of all our in-house design talent.”
Illustrator Ewoudt Boonstra, who has worked with Ambassadors several times before, also joined forces with the creative team and contributed an animated piece.
Breezy vibe
A guiding colour palet, John Mescall’s voice and music by Joep Meijburg, Composer & Sound Designer, form a strong line through all the chapters.
As Meijburg puts it, “Mescall’s voice was a strong inspiration, especially his calmness and laid-back rhythm gave me an instant feeling I wanted to bring across. The music needed a breezy vibe to support the visuals and the voice-over.”
“In a very early stage I got so excited because the music was hitting the vibe I wanted to bring across, says Meijburg, so I called up Vincent and we started high five-ing.”
For both – Lammers and Meijburg – the creative freedom in this project is the cherry on the cake, keeping the spontaneity in every second. The music and visuals came together in a beautiful way bringing Mescall’s words to life in print and in animation.
Adriaans adds: “I truly hope we can do international inspirational collaborations like this more often.”

This is a summary of an October thru-hike on the John Muir Trail. I traveled seven days on foot from Whitney Portal to Yosemite and stuffed my camera with as much beauty as I could. Evening temperatures were below freezing each night and signs of winter were ever-present. I hope you enjoy the pictures and the story.
General Summary:
The John Muir Trail climbs out of Yosemite Valley northeast over the Cathedral Range to Tuolumne Meadows then descends into Lyell Canyon which it follows south, up Lyell canyon, to Donohue Pass (11,050' high), in the ridge which divides Yosemite National Park from the Ansel Adams Wilderness in the Inyo National Forest. The largest glacier in the Sierras lies on the face of Mt Lyell.
Over Donohue Pass the trail descends into the valley of the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River, a wet region with many lakes and streams that attracts fishers (who need a permit from the State Fish and Game Department.) It descends to Shadow Lake, a famously-beautiful lake, then rises up over a ridge before descending to Devil's Postpile. The scenic Ritter Range, an old range whose rising preceded the rising of the Sierra forms the east wall of the valley. The soil changes from the rough grainy soil of eroding mountains to volcanic dust, a less pleasant soil to deal with keeping clean against, especially when wet.
At Devil's Postpile and Red's Meadow. A small National Monument, Devil's Postpile features the unusual formation of hundreds of hexagonal posts of basalt that had the opportunity to solidify without mixing, allowing them to freeze in hexagonal posts. A mile from Devil's Postpile lies Red's Meadow which has a campground (with a site for backpackers that always has room for one more), a hot springs plumbed into shower stalls providing free hot showers (perhaps after a wait for the water to get hot, especially the further down the pipes your stall. Wait for it.), a store (food but few supplies for hikers - it appears to serve fishers more) and cafe, both open 7 AM to 7 PM, and a shuttle bus goes to the town of Mammoth Lakes (round-trip: $8).
The trail climbs out of the valley of the Middle Fork through forest still burnt from the 1993 fire through a meadow, past Deer Creek, and then along the west face of the ridge above Cascade Valley to Duck Creek. From Duck Creek the trail ascends a ridge-point then descends into Purple Lake, then another ridge-point before descending into Lake Virginia. The trail descends steeply to Tully Hole, on a fork of Fish Creek, then gently to the head of Cascade Valley, where it crosses Fish Creek on a bridge and ascends another fork of Fish Creek past high rocky Squaw and Chief Lakes to Silver Pass on Silver Divide.
The trail descends Silver Pass past Silver Pass Lake, follows Silver Pass Creek to the North Fork of Mono Creek at Pocket Meadow, then descends to Quail Meadows, a mile east of Lake Edison. It crosses Mono Creek then rises steeply to Bear Ridge, follows the ridge then descends to the bank of Bear Creek. It follows Bear Creek, then its west fork, to its source, Marie Lake, then over Selden Pass.
The JMT now descends Selden Pass past Heart Lake, through a meadow to Sally Keyes Lakes, crosses Senger Creek and descends an exposed ridge to the South Fork of the San Joaquin River. About halfway down a trail that leads directly to Blayney Meadows and its hot spring meets the JMT. The JMT itself descends a little less steeply than that trail to the bank of the South Fork to where the Piute Creek joins the South Fork and the border with King's Canyon National Park.
The JMT continues up the South Fork, crossing it on bridges twice until it reaches Goddard Canyon, where it heads east steeply up into meadow-filled Evolution Valley. After passing through Evolution, McClure (ranger station here), and Colby Meadows it climbs to Evolution Lake, surrounded by many high mountains named after famous scientists who contributed to the theory of evolution, mountains popular with climbers. From Evolution Lake the JMT passes four more lakes before ascending to Muir Pass on the Goddard Divide. Muir Pass has a well-built stone shelter where stranded hikers can spend a night (no fires!).

Talking in rhyming sentences or speaking the lyrics instead of singing them, which was very common in Country & Western music. It began with the square dance "caller" who gave direction to the dancers, through rhyming sentences set to the cadence or beat of the music being played by a live band. He never sang, he just spoke the words in rhyme. Much the same as a auction house auctioneer, who speaks the bids in a fast rhythm, choosing words which often rhyme. The "caller" and the dance can be: "traced back through England to the old French cotillions" (17th century) (per Lloyd Shaw-1939).
Also, a form of "calling" or "auction house crying" can be found in the 1947 recording of, "Smoke, Smoke, Smoke (That Cigarette) (Tex Williams & Phil Harris) or "The Darktown Poker Club" (1946) (Phil Harris) for example, and many other older recordings. Therefore, "rap" isn't new, it's just a continuation of something which started many years earlier.

On behalf of Adformatie, the Dutch advertising trade magazine, Nils Adriaans approached Ambassadors to team up for a creative piece on John Mescall’s 8 inspirat...
On behalf of Adformatie, the Dutch advertising trade magazine, Nils Adriaans approached Ambassadors to team up for a creative piece on John Mescall’s 8 inspirational sources. In started off as a simple interview between Adriaans and Mescall, who is the creative director for ‘Dumb ways to die’, but accelerated into a printed 8-page section and animated short film to accompany the story.
Adriaans: “First of all, John was really cooperative – a big thanks goes out to McCann New York (where Mescall works as Global Executive Creative Director and Global Creative Council President at McCann Worldgroup). Second of all Ambassadors took it home big time, both creatively and production wise. The whole project felt like a gift.’
Mescall’ story came to life using a voice-over and there is no better person than himself to record his own words. His calm, Australian accent becomes a strong inspiration and sets the tone for the rest of the project.
“From that moment on it became a team effort, says Vincent Lammers, head of Design & Animation, using up every spare moment to design and animate every aspect of the short film. All designers were given complete freedom to experiment based on the given interview script, which resulted in almost 20 different approaches. So for every chapter we adopted a specific style using either paper animations, 3D animations, pencil animations and a lot more making it a showcase
of all our in-house design talent.”
Illustrator Ewoudt Boonstra, who has worked with Ambassadors several times before, also joined forces with the creative team and contributed an animated piece.
Breezy vibe
A guiding colour palet, John Mescall’s voice and music by Joep Meijburg, Composer & Sound Designer, form a strong line through all the chapters.
As Meijburg puts it, “Mescall’s voice was a strong inspiration, especially his calmness and laid-back rhythm gave me an instant feeling I wanted to bring across. The music needed a breezy vibe to support the visuals and the voice-over.”
“In a very early stage I got so excited because the music was hitting the vibe I wanted to bring across, says Meijburg, so I called up Vincent and we started high five-ing.”
For both – Lammers and Meijburg – the creative freedom in this project is the cherry on the cake, keeping the spontaneity in every second. The music and visuals came together in a beautiful way bringing Mescall’s words to life in print and in animation.
Adriaans adds: “I truly hope we can do international inspirational collaborations like this more often.”

This is a summary of an October thru-hike on the John Muir Trail. I traveled seven days on foot from Whitney Portal to Yosemite and stuffed my camera with as much beauty as I could. Evening temperatures were below freezing each night and signs of winter were ever-present. I hope you enjoy the pictures and the story.
General Summary:
The John Muir Trail climbs out of Yosemite Valley northeast over the Cathedral Range to Tuolumne Meadows then descends into Lyell Canyon which it follows south, up Lyell canyon, to Donohue Pass (11,050' high), in the ridge which divides Yosemite National Park from the Ansel Adams Wilderness in the Inyo National Forest. The largest glacier in the Sierras lies on the face of Mt Lyell.
Over Donohue Pass the trail descends into the valley of the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River, a wet region with many lakes and streams that attracts fishers (who need a permit from the State Fish and Game Department.) It descends to Shadow Lake, a famously-beautiful lake, then rises up over a ridge before descending to Devil's Postpile. The scenic Ritter Range, an old range whose rising preceded the rising of the Sierra forms the east wall of the valley. The soil changes from the rough grainy soil of eroding mountains to volcanic dust, a less pleasant soil to deal with keeping clean against, especially when wet.
At Devil's Postpile and Red's Meadow. A small National Monument, Devil's Postpile features the unusual formation of hundreds of hexagonal posts of basalt that had the opportunity to solidify without mixing, allowing them to freeze in hexagonal posts. A mile from Devil's Postpile lies Red's Meadow which has a campground (with a site for backpackers that always has room for one more), a hot springs plumbed into shower stalls providing free hot showers (perhaps after a wait for the water to get hot, especially the further down the pipes your stall. Wait for it.), a store (food but few supplies for hikers - it appears to serve fishers more) and cafe, both open 7 AM to 7 PM, and a shuttle bus goes to the town of Mammoth Lakes (round-trip: $8).
The trail climbs out of the valley of the Middle Fork through forest still burnt from the 1993 fire through a meadow, past Deer Creek, and then along the west face of the ridge above Cascade Valley to Duck Creek. From Duck Creek the trail ascends a ridge-point then descends into Purple Lake, then another ridge-point before descending into Lake Virginia. The trail descends steeply to Tully Hole, on a fork of Fish Creek, then gently to the head of Cascade Valley, where it crosses Fish Creek on a bridge and ascends another fork of Fish Creek past high rocky Squaw and Chief Lakes to Silver Pass on Silver Divide.
The trail descends Silver Pass past Silver Pass Lake, follows Silver Pass Creek to the North Fork of Mono Creek at Pocket Meadow, then descends to Quail Meadows, a mile east of Lake Edison. It crosses Mono Creek then rises steeply to Bear Ridge, follows the ridge then descends to the bank of Bear Creek. It follows Bear Creek, then its west fork, to its source, Marie Lake, then over Selden Pass.
The JMT now descends Selden Pass past Heart Lake, through a meadow to Sally Keyes Lakes, crosses Senger Creek and descends an exposed ridge to the South Fork of the San Joaquin River. About halfway down a trail that leads directly to Blayney Meadows and its hot spring meets the JMT. The JMT itself descends a little less steeply than that trail to the bank of the South Fork to where the Piute Creek joins the South Fork and the border with King's Canyon National Park.
The JMT continues up the South Fork, crossing it on bridges twice until it reaches Goddard Canyon, where it heads east steeply up into meadow-filled Evolution Valley. After passing through Evolution, McClure (ranger station here), and Colby Meadows it climbs to Evolution Lake, surrounded by many high mountains named after famous scientists who contributed to the theory of evolution, mountains popular with climbers. From Evolution Lake the JMT passes four more lakes before ascending to Muir Pass on the Goddard Divide. Muir Pass has a well-built stone shelter where stranded hikers can spend a night (no fires!).
