The Streets were active as a three-piece rock/pop band in the Milton Keynes are during the early eighties.

Album: Long Shadows

Former Dire Straits bassist John Illsley has announced the release on 13 May of his sixth solo album, Long Shadows, on Creek Touring & Records. It's the follow-up to 2014's Testing The Water and the subsequent Live In London set.
Illsley jokes: “I have been working on these songs for 18 months – no point in rushing!” But in reality, he has been in highly productive form in recent years: he made his first two solo records while Dire Straits were at their 1980s peak, 1984's Never Told A Soul and Glass in 1988. But the new release will be his fourth studio project, including 2008's Beautiful You with Greg Pearle, in just eight years.
Illsley sings lead vocals, plays bass and acoustic guitar on all of the album's eight tracks, and recorded Long Shadows at his former bandmate and close friend Mark Knopfler's British Grove Studios, as well as at Room With A View and A Bay Studios. There are guest appearances by another longtime Dire Straits and Knopfler collaborator, Guy Fletcher, who co-produced the album with John; by electric guitarist Simon Johnson, whose credits include Lana Del Rey and James Morrison; and by Illsley’s children Jess and Dee Dee, who sing backing vocals.
John notes that the album's lyrical themes address “the obvious political and social elements which have always concerned me. 'In The Darkness,' for example is a take on the internet and how it seduces us all in some ways, but particularly those young people who get influenced to join radical religious groups.”

Middle Fork will be installed in the central Congress building in Davos, Switzerland from January 17-20, 2017 for the annual Davos World Economic Forum. On February 10, 2017, Middle Fork will open in the Seattle Art Museum’s Brotman Forum.
From November 2015 through May 2016, Middle Fork was exhibited at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Museum of American Art in Washington D.C. The first iteration of Middle Fork was fabricated in and debuted at the Seattle MadArt Studio in 2015.
With each exhibition the sculpture continues to grow. At the Renwick Gallery the sculpture was 45 feet long with limbs spanning 20 feet. When the sculpture opens at the Seattle Art Museum in February it will be 105 feet long with limbs spreading 30 feet wide and tall.
Anyone interested in volunteering and participating in the creation of this next phase of the sculpture is welcome to contact Lauren at volunteer@johngrade.com for more information. We will be working on the sculpture through the end of January 2017 in our South Seattle studio. More than 2000 people have now contributed to the creation of the sculpture.
An updated version of this video will be posted before the close of 2016.

John Close
John Close, also known as Poet Close, was born on 11 August 1816 at Gunnerside and died at Kirkby Stephen on 15 February 1891. He was an enterprising and prolific writer of working class origin who catered to the English Lake District tourist trade. Of only local significance before 1860, what brought him national notoriety was his being granted and then stripped of a Civil List pension that year.
Early life
'Poet Close' was born in the Yorkshire Swaledale as the son of Jarvis Close, a butcher who was well known as a Wesleyan local preacher. Soon after 1830, while still working for his father, Close began issuing fly-sheets of verse which he sold at markets, his first substantial prose work being The Satirist, written when he was sixteen. Both the 1841 and 1851 census record John as still living with his parents in Kirkby Stephen. In 1842 he published The Book of the Chronicles: Winter Evening Tales of Westmorland. This was a miscellany of prose and verse, featuring Kirkby Stephen under the name “Little-Town” and his own poems ascribed to one of his many aliases, Tom Dowell. It was printed in Appleby and the many typographical errors and omissions so annoyed him that in 1846 he established himself as a printer.

Up Close
Up Close is an American sports interview show that aired on ESPN from 1981-2001.
History
Early years
The program debuted in 1981 on USA Network and was created by the advertising agency Foote, Cone and Belding to advertise one of its clients, Mazda cars. Mazda SportsLook moved to ESPN in 1982 and was subsequently rechristened Up Close.
Time slots
Once it arrived at ESPN, SportsLook was slotted before SportsCenter. The show aired at 6 p.m. Eastern time, followed by SportsCenter at 6:30. The show remained in that slot until September 1999, when SportsCenter was expanded to an hour and Up Close, as it was then renamed, moved to 5:30 p.m.
Hosts
The original host of Up Close was Roy Firestone, who served as host for 13 years. During this time, both Firestone and the show won many CableACE Awards, then the gold standard for cable television programming. When Firestone left in 1994, Chris Myers became the new host; he stayed there until 1998 and enjoyed the highest ratings in the history of the program. Gary Miller was the show's host when Up Close signed off in 2001.

In this film, artist Mariah Robertson works with Bill—a male nude model she met online—taking pictures of him in her Greenpoint studio, and later, rehearsing a Martha Graham-inspired dance routine in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Robertson’s point of view is revealed through a series of jokes that highlight not only the artist’s wry sense of humor, but also suggest a critical engagement with gender dynamics, sexual politics, and double-standards within art history. Reacting to the pervasiveness of “purposeful nudes” — from paintings of odalisques to contemporary pornography — Robertson’s images of naked men occupy “a confusing middle zone” that mingle self-reflexivity with visual whimsy. Album: Long Shadows Released: May 13, 2016 Former Dire Straits bassist John Illsley has announced the release on 13 May of his sixth solo album, Long Shadows, on Creek Touring & Records. It's the follow-up to 2014's Testing The Water and the subsequent Live In London set. Illsley jokes: “I have been working on these songs for 18 months – no point in rushing!” But in reality, he has been in highly productive form in recent years: he made his first two solo records while Dire Straits were at their 1980s peak, 1984's Never Told A Soul and Glass in 1988. Middle Fork - John Grade Studio
Middle Fork will be installed in the central Congress building in Davos, Switzerland from January 17-20, 2017 for the annual Davos World Economic Forum. On February 10, 2017, Middle Fork will open in the Seattle Art Museum’s Brotman Forum. From November 2015 through May 2016, Middle Fork was exhibited at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Museum of American Art in Washington D.C. The first iteration of Middle Fork was fabricated in and debuted at the Seattle MadArt Studio in 2015. With each exhibition the sculpture continues to grow. At the Renwick Gallery the sculpture was 45 feet long with limbs spanning 20 feet. It's nice to cool off after a big multi-film montage by doing something shorter. This is pretty much a repackaging of the "In Short" idea I've done before by focusing only on close-ups from a single film. Former Dire Straits bassist John Illsley has announced the release on 13 May of his sixth solo album, Long Shadows, on Creek Touring & Records. It's the follow-up to 2014's Testing The Water and the subsequent Live In London set.
Illsley jokes: “I have been working on these songs for 18 months – no point in rushing!” But in reality, he has been in highly productive form in recent years: he made his first two solo records while Dire Straits were at their 1980s peak, 1984's Never Told A Soul and Glass in 1988. But the new release will be his fourth studio project, including 2008's Beautiful You with Greg Pearle, in just eight years.
Illsley sings lead vocals, plays bass and acoustic guitar on all of the album's eight tracks, and recorded Long Shadows at his former bandmate and close friend Mark Knopfler's British Grove Studios, as well as at Room With A View and A Bay Studios. There are guest appearances by another longtime Dire Straits and Knopfler collaborator, Guy Fletcher, who co-produced the album with John; by electric guitarist Simon Johnson, whose credits include Lana Del Rey and James Morrison; and by Illsley’s children Jess and Dee Dee, who sing backing vocals.
John notes that the album's lyrical themes address “the obvious political and social elements which have always concerned me. Middle Fork will be installed in the central Congress building in Davos, Switzerland from January 17-20, 2017 for the annual Davos World Economic Forum. On February 10, 2017, Middle Fork will open in the Seattle Art Museum’s Brotman Forum.
From November 2015 through May 2016, Middle Fork was exhibited at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Museum of American Art in Washington D.C. The first iteration of Middle Fork was fabricated in and debuted at the Seattle MadArt Studio in 2015.
With each exhibition the sculpture continues to grow. At the Renwick Gallery the sculpture was 45 feet long with limbs spanning 20 feet. When the sculpture opens at the Seattle Art Museum in February it will be 105 feet long with limbs spreading 30 feet wide and tall.
Anyone interested in volunteering and participating in the creation of this next phase of the sculpture is welcome to contact Lauren at volunteer@johngrade.com for more information. We will be working on the sculpture through the end of January 2017 in our South Seattle studio. More than 2000 people have now contributed to the creation of the sculpture.

In this film, artist Mariah Robertson works with Bill—a male nude model she met online—taking pictures of him in her Greenpoint studio, and later, rehearsing a Martha Graham-inspired dance routine in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Robertson’s point of view is revealed through a series of jokes that highlight not only the artist’s wry sense of humor, but also suggest a critical engagement with gender dynamics, sexual politics, and double-standards within art history. Reacting to the pervasiveness of “purposeful nudes” — from paintings of odalisques to contemporary pornography — Robertson’s images of naked men occupy “a confusing middle zone” that mingle self-reflexivity with visual whimsy.
Mariah Robertson (b. 1975, Indianapolis, IN, USA) grew up in Sacramento, California, and lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

It's nice to cool off after a big multi-film montage by doing something shorter. This is pretty much a repackaging of the "In Short" idea I've done before by focusing only on close-ups from a single film.
Boiling a film down to just simple items is an interesting experiment and I've liked the results in the past. I'll definitely do more of these.
UPDATE: I'm gonna post a new one of these every week for the next little while. They are so much fun to do and they'll help tide over my now over 300 followers until I next release a big Cinematic Supercut.
So the first selection to get the "Up Close" treatment is Jurassic Park (1993).

Holy Smokes! Over 1000 followers. Thanks to all of you. Now you know me, I don't like going more than a few months without uploading something.
The big super secret really cool montage that I'm surely not overhyping is still very much in progress. I did get sidetracked along the way during summer. One such activity that occupied my time was watching female directed films I'd never seen before. For you see today is the one year anniversary of the 52FilmsByWomen Campaign started by the Women In Film website. The task is to watch 52 films directed by women in a year. That's just one film a week. https://womeninfilm.org/52-films/
Thus I figured I could whip up another Up Close montage to satisfy my own quota needs and give a shout-out to a great challenge. I've still got a ways to go but I'm confident I can binge a little and get to 52 films before the end of the year.
So with all that said and done let's talk about today's Up Close film. It's one of my favourite movies, that just so happens to have been directed by a very talented woman. American Psycho (2000).

This video was shot circa 1983 at BBC Milton Keynes as part of a training exercise to familiarise BBC staff with the various aspects of studio production. It features "The Streets" with the late John Close on lead vocals. Remixed and re-edited in September 09. See also "To Be Young" by The Streets. The Streets were active as a three-piece rock/pop band in the Milton Keynes are during the early eighties.

It's the follow-up to 2014's Testing The Water and the subsequent Live In London set. Middle Fork - John Grade Studio
Middle Fork will be installed in the central Congress building in Davos, Switzerland from January 17-20, 2017 for the annual Davos World Economic Forum. On February 10, 2017, Middle Fork will open in the Seattle Art Museum’s Brotman Forum. From November 2015 through May 2016, Middle Fork was exhibited at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Museum of American Art in Washington D.C. The first iteration of Middle Fork was fabricated in and debuted at the Seattle MadArt Studio in 2015. With each exhibition the sculpture continues to grow. It's nice to cool off after a big multi-film montage by doing something shorter. This is pretty much a repackaging of the "In Short" idea I've done before by focusing only on close-ups from a single film. Boiling a film down to just simple items is an interesting experiment and I've liked the results in the past. I'll definitely do more of these. UPDATE: I'm gonna post a new one of these every week for the next little while. There are guest appearances by another longtime Dire Straits and Knopfler collaborator, Guy Fletcher, who co-produced the album with John; by electric guitarist Simon Johnson, whose credits include Lana Del Rey and James Morrison; and by Illsley’s children Jess and Dee Dee, who sing backing vocals.
John notes that the album's lyrical themes address “the obvious political and social elements which have always concerned me. 'In The Darkness,' for example is a take on the internet and how it seduces us all in some ways, but particularly those young people who get influenced to join radical religious groups.”

Middle Fork will be installed in the central Congress building in Davos, Switzerland from January 17-20, 2017 for the annual Davos World Economic Forum. On February 10, 2017, Middle Fork will open in the Seattle Art Museum’s Brotman Forum.
From November 2015 through May 2016, Middle Fork was exhibited at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Museum of American Art in Washington D.C. The first iteration of Middle Fork was fabricated in and debuted at the Seattle MadArt Studio in 2015.
With each exhibition the sculpture continues to grow. At the Renwick Gallery the sculpture was 45 feet long with limbs spanning 20 feet. When the sculpture opens at the Seattle Art Museum in February it will be 105 feet long with limbs spreading 30 feet wide and tall.
Anyone interested in volunteering and participating in the creation of this next phase of the sculpture is welcome to contact Lauren at volunteer@johngrade.com for more information. We will be working on the sculpture through the end of January 2017 in our South Seattle studio. More than 2000 people have now contributed to the creation of the sculpture.
An updated version of this video will be posted before the close of 2016.

In this film, artist Mariah Robertson works with Bill—a male nude model she met online—taking pictures of him in her Greenpoint studio, and later, rehearsing a Martha Graham-inspired dance routine in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Robertson’s point of view is revealed through a series of jokes that highlight not only the artist’s wry sense of humor, but also suggest a critical engagement with gender dynamics, sexual politics, and double-standards within art history. Reacting to the pervasiveness of “purposeful nudes” — from paintings of odalisques to contemporary pornography — Robertson’s images of naked men occupy “a confusing middle zone” that mingle self-reflexivity with visual whimsy.

It's nice to cool off after a big multi-film montage by doing something shorter. This is pretty much a repackaging of the "In Short" idea I've done before by focusing only on close-ups from a single film.
Boiling a film down to just simple items is an interesting experiment and I've liked the results in the past. I'll definitely do more of these.
UPDATE: I'm gonna post a new one of these every week for the next little while. They are so much fun to do and they'll help tide over my now over 300 followers until I next release a big Cinematic Supercut.
So the first selection to get the "Up Close" treatment is Jurassic Park (1993).

Holy Smokes! Over 1000 followers. Thanks to all of you. Now you know me, I don't like going more than a few months without uploading something.
The big super secret really cool montage that I'm surely not overhyping is still very much in progress. I did get sidetracked along the way during summer. One such activity that occupied my time was watching female directed films I'd never seen before. For you see today is the one year anniversary of the 52FilmsByWomen Campaign started by the Women In Film website. The task is to watch 52 films directed by women in a year. Thus I figured I could whip up another Up Close montage to satisfy my own quota needs and give a shout-out to a great challenge. I've still got a ways to go but I'm confident I can binge a little and get to 52 films before the end of the year.

Hillary Clinton Delivers Remarks in NYC | Hillary Clinton is expected to formally and publicly concede to Donald Trump this morning after an upset defeat in the presidential election.
Trump praised Clinton in his victory speech overnight, saying the former secretary of state had called to concede. But she has not made any public statements prior to this morning's expected speech.
Instead of addressing her crowd of supporters who had waited for hours at the Javits Center Tuesday night, Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta made a brief statement shortly after 2 a.m., saying the race in several states was "too close to call" and telling supporters to go home.
Clinton staffers and donors are now gathering for her speech at The New Yorker hotel, about a half mile from where she had been planning to celebrate a historic victory Tuesday night.
