Maya Angelou (i/ˈmaɪ.ə ˈændʒəloʊ/; born Marguerite Annie Johnson; April 4, 1928 – May 28, 2014) was an American author, poet, and civil rights activist. She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, and several books of poetry, and was credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning over 50 years. She received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees. Angelou is best known for her series of seven autobiographies, which focus on her childhood and early adult experiences. The first, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969), tells of her life up to the age of 17 and brought her international recognition and acclaim.
She became a poet and writer after a series of occupations as a young adult, including fry cook, prostitute, nightclub dancer and performer, cast member of the opera Porgy and Bess, coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and journalist in Egypt and Ghana during the decolonization of Africa. She was an actor, writer, director, and producer of plays, movies, and public television programs. In 1982, she earned the first lifetime Reynolds Professorship of American Studies at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She was active in the Civil Rights movement, and worked with Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X. Beginning in the 1990s, she made around 80 appearances a year on the lecture circuit, something she continued into her eighties. In 1993, Angelou recited her poem "On the Pulse of Morning" (1993) at President Bill Clinton's inauguration, making her the first poet to make an inaugural recitation since Robert Frost at President John F. Kennedy's inauguration in 1961.
Actors: Bruce McGill (actor), Gailard Sartain (actor), Giancarlo Esposito (actor), Ted Levine (actor), Steven Randazzo (actor), Paul Rodriguez (actor), Michael Dorn (actor), LeVar Burton (actor), Jamie Foxx (actor), Barry Shabaka Henley (actor), Vincent De Paul (actor), Joe Morton (actor), Leon (actor), Will Smith (actor), Ron Silver (actor),
Plot: In 1964, a brash new pro boxer, fresh from his olympic gold medal victory, explodes on to the scene, Cassius Clay. Bold and outspoken, he cuts an entirely new image for African Americans in sport with his proud public self confidence with his unapologetic belief that he is the greatest boxer of all time. To his credit, he sets out to prove that with his highly agile and forceful style soon making him a formidable boxer who soon claims the heavyweight championship. His personal life is no less noteworthy with his allegiance to the Nation of Islam, his friendship with the controversial Malcolm X and his abandonment of his slave name in favour of Muhammad Ali stirring up controversy. Yet, at the top of his game, both Ali's personal and professional lives face the ultimate test with the military draft rules are changed, making him eligible for military induction during the Vietnam War. Despite the fact that he could easily agree to a sweetheart deal that would have meant an easy tour of duty for himself, Ali refuses to submit on principle to cooperate in an unjust war for a racist nation that treated his people so poorly. The cost of that stand is high as he finds himself unable to legally box in his own country while his case is contested in court. What follows is a battle for a man who would sacrifice so much for what he believes in and a comeback that would cement his legend as one of the great sports figures of all time.

CALYPSO HEAT WAVE (1957) was a movie musical produced as part of the calypso craze that swept the US and England in the late 1950s. It showcased a number of contemporary performers, most notably Maya Angelou, who had recently recorded an album of calypso music titled MISS CALYPSO. This clip features Angelou performing the song "Run Joe" and offers a rare opportunity to study the early musical styling of this major African American writer.
Writer, educator and activist Maya Angelou talks to TIME about her unusual relationship with her mother, why she likes guns, and why she has written seven autobiographies.

The Seat Of The Soul 25th Anniversary Edition audio excerpt from Dr. Maya Angelou's preface.
Maya Angelou, who died yesterday at the age of 86, spoke with Bill on several occasions over the course of her life, but his first interview with her was filmed in 1973 in her cottage in Berkeley, California. At the time, Angelou, 45, was already an accomplished singer, dancer, poet, author, actress, editor, songwriter and playwright. As Bill noted in his introduction, this “gifted and very human woman” had “touched more bases than Henry Aaron. Yet, all these categories failed to do justice to the scope of her life.” Her bestselling autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, had been released just four years before. In it, she explored issues such as identity, rape, racism, and literacy. In this clip, Bill opens their conversation by asking Angelou about the progress of the civil rig...
Maya Angelou describes her coming of age as a precocious but insecure black girl in the American South during the 1930s and subsequently in California during the 1940s. Maya’s parents divorce when she is only three years old and ship Maya and her older brother, Bailey, to live with their paternal grandmother, Annie Henderson, in rural Stamps, Arkansas. Annie, whom they call Momma, runs the only store in the black section of Stamps and becomes the central moral figure in Maya’s childhood. As young children, Maya and Bailey struggle with the pain of having been rejected and abandoned by their parents. Maya also finds herself tormented by the belief that she is an ugly child who will never measure up to genteel, white girls. She does not feel equal to other black children. One Easter Sunday,...

Familiar faces recite some of Maya Angelou's most famous words, from the poem "Caged Bird," in honor of poet and author who died Wednesday at the age of 86.
Known alternatively as 'Caged Bird' and 'I know why the caged bird sings', this poem was inspired by Paul Laurence Dunbar, who wrote a similarly themed poem named 'Sympathy'
Listen to this title in full for free here: http://www.audiobooks.com/audiobook/i-know-why-the-caged-bird-sings/89180 I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, by Maya Angelou Sent by their mother to live with their devout, self-sufficient grandmother in a small Southern town, Maya and her brother, Bailey, endure the ache of abandonment and the prejudice of the local 'powhitetrash.' At eight years old and back at her mother's side in St. Louis, Maya is attacked by a man many times her age'and has to live with the consequences for a lifetime. Years later, in San Francisco, Maya learns about love for herself and the kindness of others, her own strong spirit, and the ideas of great authors ('I met and fell in love with William Shakespeare') will allow her to be free instead of imprisoned. Maya Angelou's wonderful poem, narrated by me. The poem, obviously, does not belong to me. It is the property of the copyright owner. Also, the pictures used are not mine either. A thousand thank-you's to the owners of all the photos. A free bird leaps on the back Of the wind and floats downstream Till the current ends and dips his wing In the orange suns rays And dares to claim the sky. But a BIRD that stalks down his narrow cage Can seldom see through his bars of rage His wings are clipped and his feet are tied So he opens his throat to sing. The caged bird sings with a fearful trill Of things unknown but longed for still And his tune is heard on the distant hill for The caged bird sings of freedom. The free bird thinks of another breeze And the trade winds soft through The sighin...

A Pledge to Rescue Our Youth
Maya Angelou
© 2006
Young women, young men of color, we add our voices to the voices of your ancestors who speak to you over ancient seas and across impossible mountain tops.
Come up from the gloom of national neglect, you have already been paid for.
Come out of the shadow of irrational prejudice, you owe
no racial debt to history.
The blood of our bodies and the prayers of our souls have bought you a future
free from shame and bright beyond the telling of it.
We pledge ourselves and our resources to seek for you clean and well-furnished schools, safe and non-threatening streets, employment which makes use of your talents, but does not degrade your dignity.
You are the best we have.
You are all we have.
You are what we have become.
