Ruhr Valley - Industrial culture in 5 minutes 🙂 Explore Ruhr Area with its blast furnaces & more
The Ruhr Valley or Ruhr area is one of the most diverse regions in whole Germany. Hundreds of industrial monuments reflect the past. Today there are impressive places for leisure and culture.
We are going to show you Phoenix West, a „Stehbierhalle“, a Blast Furnace and of course Zollverein – it is an Unesco World Heritage. To relax, we chill on the Seaside Beach Baldeney and we do a canoe tour on the Ruhr. One of our highlights is Landschaftspark Duisburg Nord. A special place in Ruhrgebiet!

Mining Damage in the Ruhr Region | Made in Germany
As pockmarked as Swiss cheese - that's what it looks like under the surface of the Ruhr region. It was once the center of German coal mining; now its residents are struggling with the long-term effects.

If these pumps ever stop, part of Germany floods.
The Ruhr Valley, in north-west Germany, is an industrial coal-mining area. And because of that kilometre-deep mining, parts of it have sunk, the drainage patterns have changed: and now, if the pumps of Emschergenossenschaft ever stop, quite a few towns and cities will end up flooded.

Train ride through a miniature world of the former industrial Ruhr district in Germany
In this video, we are not the train driver, but a passenger. We look out the window and enjoy the train journey along an incredibly large model railway layout. This model railroad depicts heart of Germany’s coal and steel industry, the so-called Ruhr district. The layout was constructed in HO scale and covers an area of more than 420 square meters. On the layout, there are many well-known buildings of this former industrial region, for example, steelworks, blast furnaces and factories.

Europe’s biggest industrial area turns green! For more than 150 years the Ruhr Area was not only the heart of Germany's economy, but also Europe's most extensive industrial zone. Mines, steelworks and chemical industries dominated the region. River systems collapsed and the skies were ash-grey. But over the last decades the area has been transformed. Due to the crisis in coal and steel, many industries were shut down, and huge areas were abandoned. A whole variety of animals returned to fill the vacuum; invading factory ruins, and re-colonizing badlands, artificial hills and lakes. Now peregrines breed on old smokestacks, natterjack toads occupy temporary pools and blue-winged gra...

A documentary short examines the varied activities in the life of an average working man's family in the German industrial city of Essen after World War 2. A brilliant look at the 1950's life in Germany's Ruhr region.
The film explores the Maier family, father works in the steel plant, Mother stays at home and looks after the twin girls, son goes off to school. It offers richly interesting tidbits (milk break in school for those who pay for it, Essen is a town that's just covered in smoke all day, etc.) and tends not to delve into political matters. And watch out for the little "Karl Albrecht" corner shop at 7:23, it is now known as the discount supermarket chain "Aldi".
About the Ruhr region in Germany:
The Ruhr (German: Ruhrgebiet), or the Ruhr district, Ruhr region or Ruhr valley, is a polycentric urban area in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. With a population density of 2,800/km² and a population of eight and a half million, it is the largest urban agglomeration in Germany. It consists of several large, industrial cities bordered by the rivers Ruhr to the south, Rhine to the west, and Lippe to the north. In the southwest it borders the Bergisches Land. It is considered part of the larger Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region of more than 12 million people, which is among the largest in Europe.
From west to east, the region includes the cities of Duisburg, Oberhausen, Bottrop, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Essen, Gelsenkirchen, Bochum, Herne, Hagen, Dortmund, and Hamm, as well as parts of the more "rural" districts of Wesel, Recklinghausen, Unna and Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis. The most populous cities are Dortmund (approx. 572,000), Essen (approx. 566,000) and Duisburg (approx. 486,000). The Ruhr area has no administrative center; each city in the area has its own administration, although there exists the supracommunal "Regionalverband Ruhr" institution in Essen. Historically, the western Ruhr towns, such as Duisburg and Essen, belonged to the historic region of the Rhineland, whereas the eastern part of the Ruhr, including Gelsenkirchen, Bochum, Dortmund and Hamm, were part of the region of Westphalia. Since the 19th century, these districts have grown together into a large complex with a vast industrial landscape, inhabited by some 7.3 million people (including Düsseldorf and Wuppertal).
For 2010, the Ruhr region was one of the European Capitals of Culture.

Now peregrines breed on old smokestacks, natterjack toads occupy temporary pools and blue-winged grasshoppers display on hot and stony wastelands. This film not only tells the story of a unique comeback, it also reveals some stunning animal behavior. Above all it celebrates the power and adaptive capacity of life itself.
