Ben van Berkel (born 1957) is a Dutch architect, working in the architectural practice UNStudio. With his studio he designed the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam, the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany and other building.
Ben van Berkel studied architecture at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, and at the Architectural Association in London, receiving the AA Diploma with Honours in 1987.
In 1988 he and his wife, Caroline Bos, set up an architectural practice in Amsterdam named Van Berkel & Bos Architectuurbureau, which realized, amongst others projects, the Karbouw office building, the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam. In 1998 van Berkel and Bos relaunched their practice as UNStudio, where UN stands for "United Net".
Ben van Berkel has lectured and taught at many architectural schools around the world. He has led Diploma Units at the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam (1992-1993) and the Architectural Association in London (1999). Before he became Professor Conceptual Design at the Städelschule in Frankfurt in 2001, he was Visiting Professor at Columbia University, Princeton University and Harvard University. In 2011 Ben van Berkel was appointed the Kenzo Tange Chair at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Central to his teaching is the inclusive approach of architectural works integrating virtual and material organisation and engineering constructions.
The Berkel is a river in the Netherlands and Germany. It is a right tributary of the River IJssel.
The river rises in Billerbeck, near the German city of Münster in North Rhine-Westphalia, and crosses the border with the Netherlands near Vreden (Germany) and Rekken (Netherlands). From there, it flows through the province of Gelderland to join the IJssel at Zutphen after about 110 kilometres.
Before the coming of the railway, the Berkel was a major shipping route for goods from Münster to Eibergen, Borculo, and Zutphen, transported in flat-bottomed boats called Berkelzompen. In the 1950s, the Dutch stretch of the river was channelized to prevent flooding and to improve drainage. Recently old bends have been reconnected to the straightened lengths of the river.

What Happened to Architectual Objectivity? Ben Van Berkel
Lecture date: 2016/05/05 The phased development and construction of the Arnhem Central Masterplan in the Netherlands took 19 years to complete and opened to the public at the end of 2015. In his lecture, Ben van Berkel discusses the role of the contemporary station as both an urban activator and the agent of an elevated passenger experience. He presents the main ambitions and the key strategies behind the design for Arnhem Central and examine a number of related UNStudio projects that enabled the testing and development of similar concepts. Ben van Berkel, born in Utrecht, the Netherlands, is the Founder and Principal Architect of UNStudio in Amsterdam, Shanghai and Hong Kong. Architects need to answer the changing needs of society and to create buildings that provide the best conditions possible in which we can prosper. Using architecture to benefit human health on multiple levels is not a luxury. It is one of the most important things architects can contribute. Ben van Berkel is the architect behind a number of iconic buildings: the famous Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam, the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, and the Centraal Station in Arnhem, for example. Based in Amsterdam, he currently holds the Kenzo Tange Chair at Harvard University and focuses his teaching and research on investigations into health - from urban concerns to policy making and from technology to neuroscience. Health impacts an increasingly broad range of contemporary life. However, until ...
Lecture date: 2014-02-06 When we talk of motion within architecture we not only refer to buildings and their potential effects, but also to shifts or twists in the integrated practice of the profession. ‘Motion’ encapsulates the past, the present and the possible future of architecture. Ben van Berkel received a Diploma with Honours in 1987 from the AA School. With Caroline Bos, he co-founded Van Berkel & Bos Architectuurbureau in 1988, and ten years later the pair established UNStudio, a network of specialists in architecture, urban development and infrastructure which has realised projects including the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, a facade and interior renovation for the Galleria Department store in Seoul and a private villa in upstate New York. Last week ArchDaily attended the 2016 World Architecture Festival in Berlin. We chatted with Ben van Berkel and asked him about his enthusiasm for bringing more technology into buildings. "Hello, my name is Ben van Berkel, I'm the founder of UNStudio. What motivates me at the moment in architecture is to design with knowledge and information. So it's not any more so that I design building forms alone, but I'm more interested in how with new technology we can improve a sustainable and hopefully healthy environment. Think of it, when it comes down to the environment, we are, for 80% of our time indoors. And think about the bad air. We are often indoors and the way how we with new technology can improve that is my fascination. And of course, I'm interested in the technological side and imp...

Wednesday, April 4 Wood Auditorium What happened to architectural objectivity? UNStudio's Ben van Berkel says: "In both art and science objective observation has of course always been paramount to understanding the nature and behaviour of that which is being observed. However, objective observation does not in itself lead to progress. It is in how we apply the knowledge gained from our observations, in how we translate, redefine and apply this knowledge, that true transformation can occur. In architecture we not only have to engage in depth with the objective, but we have to find a balance between the subjective-objective relationship in order to create well balanced architectural concepts and solutions." #wood040412

Ben van Berkel heads up the successful Dutch architectural practice UNStudiom which has 200 staff from over 23 different countries and offices in Amsterdam, Shanghai and Hong Kong. It has a 25-year history that has seen it complete 120 projects and currently has more than 50 in progress. Known for his fascination with form of geometry, evident from work such as the Mobius House, van Berkel takes a very human approach to parametric architecture, both in terms of control of design and the end user. Most recently the practice completed Arnhem Central Station that appeared on the cover of Blueprint 344.
