Kurdish women
Kurdish women (Kurdish: Jinên/Afiretên Kurd) have traditionally played important roles in Kurdish history, society and politics. Kurdish women also continue to face numerous problems, including violent victimization through female genital mutilation, honor killings, forced marriage, child marriage, rape, domestic violence, female infanticide and acid throwing.
Historical accounts
In politics
Sharaf ad-Din Bitlisi's 1597 Sharafnama mentions three Kurdish women assuming power in Kurdish principalities. Evliya Çelebi also noted that Kurdish women did occasionally assume power in Kurdistan and Ottoman authorities accepted the succession in those principalities by a female ruler.
In the late 19th century, Lady Halima Khanim of Hakari was the ruler of Bash Kala until she was forced to surrender to the Ottoman government after the suppression of Bedir Khan revolt in 1847. A young Kurdish woman named Fatma became chief of the Ezdinan tribe in 1909 and she was known among her tribe as the queen. During the World War I, Russian forces negotiated their safe passage through tribal territory with Lady Maryam of the famous Nehri family, who according to Basile Nikitine, wielded great authority among her followers. Lady Adela, ruler of Halabja, exerted great influence in the affairs of Jaf tribe in the Shahrazur plain on the Turco-Iranian frontier. The revival of commerce and restoration of law and order in the region of Halabja is attributed to her sound judgement.

Kurdish music
Kurdish music (Kurdish: موسیقای کوردی Mûzîka Kurdî) refers to music performed in Kurdish language.
Traditionally, there are three types of Kurdish Classical performers - storytellers (Kurdish: چیرۆکبێژ, çîrokbêj), minstrels (Kurdish: سترانبێژ, stranbêj) and bards (Kurdish: , dengbêj). There was no specific music related to the Kurdish princely courts, and instead, music performed in night gatherings (Kurdish: شهڤبهێرک, şevbihêrk) is considered classical. Several musical forms are found in this genre. Many songs are epic in nature, such as the popular Lawiks which are heroic ballads recounting the tales of Kurdish heroes such as Saladin. Heyrans are love ballads usually expressing the melancholy of separation and unfulfilled love. Lawje is a form of religious music and Payizoks are songs performed specifically in autumn. Love songs, dance music, wedding and other celebratory songs (Kurdish: دیلۆک / نارینک, dîlok/narînk and bend), erotic poetry and work songs are also popular.

Stateless Democracy: How the Kurdish Women Movement Liberated Democracy from the State Kurdish Women's Movement Dilar Dirik Chaired by: Maria Hlavajova (BAK, basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht) Dilar Dirik is an activist of the Kurdish Women’s Movement and a PhD candidate in the Sociology Department of the University of Cambridge. Her work examines the role of women in the Kurdish liberation movement, by comparing the ways in which the commitment to gender equality of different Kurdish parties is related to their stance on institutions of power. This lecture addresses the role of the Kurdish Women’s Movement in emancipating the project of national liberation within Kurdistan. Dirik will specifically address how the Kurdish Women’s Movement opposes the violence of states, but also that of male patriarchal domination. Understanding the overarching systematic oppression of society as perpetuated by the capitalist, nation-state-oriented, dominant world order, has brought the Kurdish Women’s Movement in opposition of the concept of the state. Here, the state is seen as a replication of patriarchal relations, which they believe can only be undermined through principled gender equality in radical democratic confederalism beyond power, nationalism and the state. The New World Summit: Stateless State took place at the Royal Flemish Theater in Brussels, Belgium, 19-21 September 2014

In March of 2015, I set off to the Kurdistan region of Iraq and Syria to begin a new personal project. In the beginning, I thought perhaps it would be a still photography trip only. Dilar Dirik is an activist of the Kurdish Women’s Movement and a PhD candidate in the Sociology Department of the University of Cambridge. Her work examines the role of women in the Kurdish liberation movement, by comparing the ways in which the commitment to gender equality of different Kurdish parties is related to their stance on institutions of power.
This lecture addresses the role of the Kurdish Women’s Movement in emancipating the project of national liberation within Kurdistan. Dirik will specifically address how the Kurdish Women’s Movement opposes the violence of states, but also that of male patriarchal domination. Understanding the overarching systematic oppression of society as perpetuated by the capitalist, nation-state-oriented, dominant world order, has brought the Kurdish Women’s Movement in opposition of the concept of the state. Here, the state is seen as a replication of patriarchal relations, which they believe can only be undermined through principled gender equality in radical democratic confederalism beyond power, nationalism and the state.

Kurdish Music, literature and folk dance are revitalized by new democratic developments
Now there is a Kurdish TV station in Turkey and Kurdish literature is flourishing rapidly.
It is one of the oldest culture in the region, unfortunately the new trends, modernization, and globalization is having negative effects to this culture.
The Dengbej Music of Kurds is very local and it is performed only by vocal tradition. This tradition is telling the old historic customs, tales and epic stories by vocal means. It is difficult and the numbers of new young singers are becoming less and less, everyday. Kurd elders are complaining the next generation will not follow the trends and old customs to keep this music alive. It may become an extinct music form.
Kürtler uzunca bir süre yaşadıkları üç devlet ve yöre üzerinde, demokratik ve kültürel haklarını kullanamamıştır. Anti demokratik yönetimler sonucu, temel lisan, okul eğitim hakları baskı altında tutulmuş sadece kukla Kürt ağalarına yetki tanınmıştır. Bugün ABD Kuzey Iraktaki kukla ağalarla aynı yöntemi devam ettirmektedir. Kürt halkı hem iç feodal hem de dış sömürü sonucu, fabrika, hastane, yol, ve okul imkânlarından mahrum bırakılmıştır. Ağalar da tarımdan ve araziden aslan payını toplamışlardır.
Son zamanlarda Kürtçe TV ye ve isimlere izin verilmiştir.
Ne yazıktır ki baskıların yapamadığını modernleşme ve globalleşme yok etmektedir.
Kürt kültürünün önemli bir müzik ve folk kültürü olan efsane, tarihi ve önemli epik olayları vokal olarak anlatan Dengbej türkü tarzı yeni gençlerin katılmaması ve gençlerin yeni ve daha çok gelir getiren ticari müzik türlerine ilgisi yüzünden. belki bu son nesille bitecektir. Bu çok üzücü ve düşündürücü bir olaydır.

شڤان پەروەر شوان پرور Şivan Perwer (pron: Shivân Parwar) (born on September 23, 1955 in Sarıdam (Sorî), Siverek, Turkey as İsmail Aygün) is a Kurdish poet, writer, musical teacher, singer, and performer on the tembûr (lute). Şivan lives in exile after fleeing Turkey in 1976 because of his music. Dilar Dirik is an activist of the Kurdish Women’s Movement and a PhD candidate in the Sociology Department of the University of Cambridge. Her work examines the role of women in the Kurdish liberation movement, by comparing the ways in which the commitment to gender equality of different Kurdish parties is related to their stance on institutions of power.
This lecture addresses the role of the Kurdish Women’s Movement in emancipating the project of national liberation within Kurdistan. Dirik will specifically address how the Kurdish Women’s Movement opposes the violence of states, but also that of male patriarchal domination. Understanding the overarching systematic oppression of society as perpetuated by the capitalist, nation-state-oriented, dominant world order, has brought the Kurdish Women’s Movement in opposition of the concept of the state. Here, the state is seen as a replication of patriarchal relations, which they believe can only be undermined through principled gender equality in radical democratic confederalism beyond power, nationalism and the state.

Kurdish Music, literature and folk dance are revitalized by new democratic developments
Now there is a Kurdish TV station in Turkey and Kurdish literature is flourishing rapidly.
It is one of the oldest culture in the region, unfortunately the new trends, modernization, and globalization is having negative effects to this culture.
The Dengbej Music of Kurds is very local and it is performed only by vocal tradition. This tradition is telling the old historic customs, tales and epic stories by vocal means. It is difficult and the numbers of new young singers are becoming less and less, everyday. Kurd elders are complaining the next generation will not follow the trends and old customs to keep this music alive. It may become an extinct music form.
Kürtler uzunca bir süre yaşadıkları üç devlet ve yöre üzerinde, demokratik ve kültürel haklarını kullanamamıştır. Anti demokratik yönetimler sonucu, temel lisan, okul eğitim hakları baskı altında tutulmuş sadece kukla Kürt ağalarına yetki tanınmıştır. Bugün ABD Kuzey Iraktaki kukla ağalarla aynı yöntemi devam ettirmektedir. Kürt halkı hem iç feodal hem de dış sömürü sonucu, fabrika, hastane, yol, ve okul imkânlarından mahrum bırakılmıştır. Ağalar da tarımdan ve araziden aslan payını toplamışlardır.
Son zamanlarda Kürtçe TV ye ve isimlere izin verilmiştir.
Ne yazıktır ki baskıların yapamadığını modernleşme ve globalleşme yok etmektedir.
Kürt kültürünün önemli bir müzik ve folk kültürü olan efsane, tarihi ve önemli epik olayları vokal olarak anlatan Dengbej türkü tarzı yeni gençlerin katılmaması ve gençlerin yeni ve daha çok gelir getiren ticari müzik türlerine ilgisi yüzünden. belki bu son nesille bitecektir.
