Mali (i/ˈmɑːli/; French: [maˈli]), officially the Republic of Mali (French: République du Mali), is a landlocked country in West Africa. Mali is the eighth-largest country in Africa, with an area of just over 1,240,000 square kilometres (480,000 sq mi). The population of Mali is 14.5 million. Its capital is Bamako. Mali consists of eight regions and its borders on the north reach deep into the middle of the Sahara Desert, while the country's southern part, where the majority of inhabitants live, features the Niger and Senegal rivers. The country's economy centers on agriculture and fishing. Some of Mali's prominent natural resources include gold, being the third largest producer of gold in the African continent, and salt. About half the population lives below the international poverty line of $1.25 (U.S.) a day. A majority of the population (55%) are non-denominational Muslims.
Present-day Mali was once part of three West African empires that controlled trans-Saharan trade: the Ghana Empire, the Mali Empire (for which Mali is named), and the Songhai Empire. During its golden age, there was a flourishing of mathematics, astronomy, literature, and art. At its peak in 1300, the Mali Empire covered an area about twice the size of modern-day France and stretched to the west coast of Africa. In the late 19th century, during the Scramble for Africa, France seized control of Mali, making it a part of French Sudan. French Sudan (then known as the Sudanese Republic) joined with Senegal in 1959, achieving independence in 1960 as the Mali Federation. Shortly thereafter, following Senegal's withdrawal from the federation, the Sudanese Republic declared itself the independent Republic of Mali. After a long period of one-party rule, a coup in 1991 led to the writing of a new constitution and the establishment of Mali as a democratic, multi-party state.

Synopsis: Slavery was officially abolished in French Sudan (nowadays Mali) by the French colonial administration in 1905 but effective emancipation of former slaves happened to be a very long process, which would still be topical beyond the Independence of Mali in 1960. Our documentary film collects the memories of slavery in Kayes. By telling the story of those who resisted slavery by escaping their masters and by founding new independent and free communities in the district of Kayes in the first half of the twentieth century, this documentary film is a unique audiovisual archive of slave emancipation in Mali. L'esclavage fut officiellement aboli au Soudan français (Mali actuel) par l'administration coloniale française en 1905, mais l'émancipation réelle des anciens esclaves devait se...

Mali's economy has been hit hard by the county's recent crisis. According to the World Bank the economy shrunk by 1.5% last year after an average growth of around 5.7% between 2000 and 2010. The effects were particularly devastating in the north where banks ran out of money after Islamist rebels closed them down.
The Economy of Mali is based to a large extent upon agriculture, with a mostly rural population engaged in subsistence agriculture. Mali is among the ten poorest nations of the world, is one of the 37 Heavily Indebted Poor Countries, and is a major recipient of foreign aid from many sources, including multilateral organizations, and bilateral programs funded by the European Union, France, United States, Canada, Netherlands, and Germany. Before 1991, the former Soviet Union, China and the Warsaw Pact countries had been a major source of economic and military aid. This video is targeted to blind users. In which John Green teaches you about globalization, a subject so epic, so, um, global, it requires two videos. In this video, John follows the surprisingly complex path of t-shirt as it criss-crosses the world before coming to rest on your doorstep, and eventually in your dresser. (Unless you're one of those people who never puts their laundry away and lives out of a laundry basket. If that's the case, shame on you.) Anyway, the story of the t-shirt and its manufacture in far-flung places like China, Guatemala, and India is a microcosm of what's going on in the global economy. Globalization is a bit of a mixed bag, and there have definitely been winners and losers along the way. In this episode John will talk about some of the benefits that have come along with it. Next week, he'll get in...
The Silk Road and Ancient Trade: In which John Green teaches you about the so-called Silk Road, a network of trade routes where goods such as ivory, silver, iron, wine, and yes, silk were exchanged across the ancient world, from China to the West. Along with all these consumer goods, things like disease and ideas made the trip as well. As is his custom, John ties the Silk Road to modern life, and the ways that we get our stuff today. Economic growth is the defining challenge of our time; without it, political and social instability rises, human progress stagnates and societies grow dimmer. But, says economist Dambisa Moyo, dogmatic capitalism isn't creating the growth we need. As she shows, in both state-sponsored and market-driven models, capitalism is failing to solve social ills, fostering corruption and creating income inequality. Moyo surveys the current economic landscape and suggests that we have to start thinking about capitalism as a spectrum so we can blend the best of different models together to foster growth. Sebeke - Amadou and Mariam - Welcome to Mali Welcome to Mali is the fifth studio album by Mali musicians Amadou & Mariam. It was released on Because Music on November 17, 2008 in Europe and was released on Nonesuch Records on March 24, 2009 in the United States. Keith Phillips of The A.V. Club gave the album a grade of A-, writing "Welcome To Mali sounds heavily produced but not overproduced, and even with the pings and whizzing, Amadou's playing and the pair's singing insure it never sounds less than organic."[3] In another positive review, Pitchfork Media's Joe Tangari wrote: "This album is an affirmation of global connectivity and an emerging global culture that transcends and repurposes tradition as it sees fit-- the sound of Mali merging with the world at large."[4]

This year’s report on the Fira Mediterrània de Manresa finds me once again trying to capture the torrent of events and concerts that make up this city-wide festival. My last report was concert-centric, but this time around, I decided to cover a bit more of the culinary and street life. Although it has its charming old section, Manresa’s main attraction year round is the monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat, carved out of the mountain that overlooks the city, affording a remarkable vista of Catalonia. But I’ve yet to visit the monastery because the festival keeps me hopping; there is something interesting happening somewhere, all the time. With over 300 events to coordinate, I imagine that the staff of the Fira has only about two weeks rest after the dust settles before they are back to...

A group of students from the American International School (AISB) of Bamako prepares to head out to Dogon country in northern Mali. AISB is located in Bamako, Mali. This is the fun of studying at an international school. Most of the kids on this trip are 12-14. With a couple of chaperons and some luggage, they all head off for an adventure in Africa. This bus was way overloaded and actually broke down on the way to Dogon country. The bus company had to send out a replacement van. The kids witnessed first hand the Dogon culture through music, dance, and food. Pretty amazing!

One billion people worldwide lack access to primary healthcare - mostly children and women. In Mali 1 in 5 children dies before reaching the age of 5, mostly due to preventable and treatable diseases. The Initiative Accès, supported by the Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development, aims to strengthen patients and healthcare providers through interventions on both the supply and the demand side. The ultimate goal is to improve maternal and child health and contribute to the UN Millennium Development Goals.
In 2017, the incredible members of Dining for Women will help Mali Health to empower women in Mali by ensuring they have access to healthcare when they need it.

Mali Health's Executive Director, Tara Hopkins shares how their Saving's for Health program is empowering women to care for their families around the capitol city of Bamako.
Mali Health's mission is to reduce maternal and child mortality in resource-poor communities in West Africa. To achieve this, Mali Health implements replicable programs that improve access to quality primary care at low costs, while increasing the capacity of and participation in local health systems. Training midwives is a key action to improve maternal health and reduce infant mortality. In Mali, the EU is funding a large training programme operated by a partnership between the Malian, the French and the Moroccan Red Cross. As a result, in urban centres like Bamako, mothers tend to give birth in maternity wards with qualified midwives, instead of giving birth at home. As part of this EU-sponsored programme, the Malian Red Cross also train health professionals and encourage them to go and work in rural areas. Even in the suburbs of the capital Bamako, patients have benefited from such trainings, as nurses trained by the Red Cross now run small health centres.
For a majority of Malians, obtaining basic health care is a cumbersome and sometimes impossible task; less than half the population lives within 5 km of a health post. The consequences of this poor infrastructure are grim: Mali has world's second highest mortality rate for children under five, and women have a 1 in 22 chance of dying due to pregnancy. But a new programme is working to expand basic health services to those who need it most. With the help of health workers and volunteers, a chain of services are being provided to battle Mali's child and maternal mortality rates.
Malaria pneumonia and Diarrhea are the main killers of children globally, accounting for 40% of all deaths among children under 5 years of age. In certain countries in sub-Saharan Africa, the relative importance of these killers is higher still. In Mali and Niger for example, malaria, pneumonia and diarrhea and cause 60% of child deaths. This is why UNICEF is supporting the Mali's Ministry of Health to deliver Integrated Community Case Management of Malaria, pneumonia, Diarrhea and acute malnutrition. This strategy, also known as iCCM, uses trained, supervised community health workers living in communities without access to medical facilities to deliver life-saving health services to the children who need them the most. Since the start of its iCCM program in 2011, Mali has trained 2000 com...

The French mission in Mali 2012 -14 The Northern Mali Conflict, Mali Civil War, or Mali War refers to armed conflicts that started from January 2012 between the northern and southern parts of Mali in Africa. On 16 January 2012, several insurgent groups began fighting a campaign against the Malian government for independence or greater autonomy for northern Mali, an area known as Azawad. The National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA), an organization fighting to make Azawad an independent homeland for the Tuareg people, had taken control of the region by April 2012. Operation Barkhane is an ongoing anti-terrorist operation in Africa's Sahel region, which commenced 1 August 2014. Ground Zero: Mali was shot in Gao, Mali, on February 21, 2013. It's basically the first legitimate combat footage to come out of the war there. Normally the French ban journalists from the frontlines and film a sanitized version of the fighting themselves and then distribute it to the media. In this case, the insurgents came to us: they slipped into Gao overnight on small boats and used suicide bombers to blast their way into government buildings. The French left the fighting to the Malian army for most of the day as a test of their combat abilities. Malian soldiers, while very brave, are almost completely untrained and had great difficulty fighting less than a dozen jihadists, some of whom were children. They fired wild bursts of automatic fire everywhere, destroying the city center. The...

The French president says the country will raise its domestic terror threat level after military action in Mali and Somalia, promising to increase protection at public buildings and transportation networks.
African affairs experts are concerned that Mali faces serious security challenges from various armed groups. That is despite a French and international military presence in the West African nation. Both France and Mali have ruled out talks with jihadist groups behind attacks in the country's north. They say it's pointless negotiating with terrorists. Kids to Kids is a youth-led program that creates opportunity for kids to be kids worldwide through the participation in arts, sports, education and environmental projects -- creating a new generation of leaders and global citizens both here at home and abroad. Kids to Kids was started in 2005 by four middle school-aged girls. Their goal was to help children in other countries develop their artistic, athletic and educational interests and enjoy childhood. Their plan was simple: gather money and supplies through kids in the United States and ship them to kids in underserved communities abroad. Initially they collected supplies and money and sent them to the Dominican Republic (DR). In 2006, they made their first trip to the DR to meet the kids they were helping. An informative photo video of travel to Djenne, Mali - including photos of the Grande Mosque and the Pays de Dogon (Dogon Country).
The Great Mosque of Djenné is a large banco or adobe building that is considered by many architects to be one of the greatest achievements of the Sudano-Sahelian architectural style. The mosque is located in the city of Djenné, Mali, on the flood plain of the Bani River. The first mosque on the site was built around the 13th century, but the current structure dates from 1907. As well as being the centre of the community of Djenné, it is one of the most famous landmarks in Africa. Along with the Old Towns of Djenné it was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988.
Mali: An Invitation to Travel is a video documentary which presents a positive yet not uncritical introduction to the history, economics and culture of Mali. It aims to fill the void between the lack of information and the misinformation currently available about Africa in general and about Mali in particular. The project was initiated by members of MaliWatch (a group that promotes democracy and openness) including Abdoulaye Doucoure, Janet Goldner, Mohomoudou Houssouba, Boubacar Kane, Iba Ndiaye, and Bakary Sylla. It was produced and edited in Bamako with additional archival footage. A co-production of MaliWatch and CNCM (Le Centre National de la Cinématographie du Mali).
