Overland Park, Kansas

Overland Park /ˈoʊvərlənd ˈpɑːrk/ is the second most populous city in the State of Kansas. Located in Johnson County, it is a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri, and the second most populous city in the Kansas City metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 173,372.

History

The city traces its roots to 1905, with the arrival of its founder, William B. Strang Jr., who plotted subdivisions along a military roadway on 600 acres (240 ha) he purchased that are now part of the old downtown area. One of those subdivisions was named Overland Park, and was the site for the first airplane flight west of the Mississippi with shows by the Wright brothers, sponsored by Strang, on December 24, 1909.

The city was incorporated as a "first class city" on May 20, 1960. Its initial population was 28,085 and was bounded by Antioch Road (west), 107th Street (south), Chadwick (east) and I-35 (north) with 13 square miles (33.7 km²) incorporated. By 1990 the population was 111,790 and in 1995 the incorporated land area was 56.6 square miles (146.6 km²). Since 1995, the population has grown to 173,250 in 2008 with 75.33 square miles (195.10 km²) of land area. Overland Park is now the second most populous city in Kansas. (Wichita is the largest.)

Kansas

Kansas ⁱ/ˈkænzəs/ is a U.S. state located in the Midwestern United States. It is named after the Kansa Native American tribe, which inhabited the area. The tribe's name (natively kką:ze) is often said to mean "people of the wind" or "people of the south wind", although this was probably not the term's original meaning. Residents of Kansas are called "Kansans". For thousands of years, what is now Kansas was home to numerous and diverse Native American tribes. Tribes in the eastern part of the state generally lived in villages along the river valleys. Tribes in the western part of the state were semi-nomadic and hunted large herds of bison. Kansas was first settled by European Americans in the 1830s, but the pace of settlement accelerated in the 1850s, in the midst of political wars over the slavery issue.

When it was officially opened to settlement by the U.S. government in 1854, abolitionist Free-Staters from New England and pro-slavery settlers from neighboring Missouri rushed to the territory to determine whether Kansas would become a free state or a slave state. Thus, the area was a hotbed of violence and chaos in its early days as these forces collided, and was known as Bleeding Kansas. The abolitionists eventually prevailed, and on January 29, 1861, Kansas entered the Union as a free state. After the Civil War, the population of Kansas grew rapidly when waves of immigrants turned the prairie into farmland. Today, Kansas is one of the most productive agricultural states, producing high yields of wheat, corn, sorghum, and soybeans. Kansas is the 15th most extensive and the 34th most populous of the 50 United States.

History

Buffalo Park was originally called Buffalo Park, and under the latter name established in the late 1870s. It was renamed Park in 1898 by postal officials.

Geography

Park is located at 39°6′44″N 100°21′38″W / 39.11222°N 100.36056°W / 39.11222; -100.36056 (39.112299, -100.360501). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.32 square miles (0.83 km²), all of it land.

Climate

The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Park has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps.

2010 census

As of the census of 2010, there were 126 people, 63 households, and 29 families residing in the city. The population density was 393.8 inhabitants per square mile (152.0/km²). There were 77 housing units at an average density of 240.6 per square mile (92.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.8% White, 0.8% Native American, 0.8% Asian, and 1.6% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.6% of the population.
