Lung cancer, also known as lung carcinoma, is a malignant lung tumor characterized by uncontrolled cell growth in tissues of the lung. If left untreated, this growth can spread beyond the lung by process of metastasis into nearby tissue or other parts of the body. Most cancers that start in the lung, known as primary lung cancers, are carcinomas that derive from epithelial cells. The main primary types are small-cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) and non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). The most common symptoms are coughing (including coughing up blood), weight loss, shortness of breath, and chest pains.
The vast majority (85%) of cases of lung cancer are due to long-term exposure to tobacco smoke. About 10–15% of cases occur in people who have never smoked. These cases are often caused by a combination of genetic factors and exposure to radon gas, asbestos, or other forms of air pollution, including second-hand smoke. Lung cancer may be seen on chest radiographs and computed tomography (CT) scans. The diagnosis is confirmed by biopsy which is usually performed by bronchoscopy or CT-guidance.
Cancer, also known as a malignant tumor or malignant neoplasm, is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. Not all tumors are cancerous; benign tumors do not spread to other parts of the body. Possible signs and symptoms include: a new lump, abnormal bleeding, a prolonged cough, unexplained weight loss, and a change in bowel movements among others. While these symptoms may indicate cancer, they may also occur due to other issues. There are over 100 different known cancers that affect humans.
Tobacco use is the cause of about 22% of cancer deaths. Another 10% is due to obesity, a poor diet, lack of physical activity, and consumption of alcohol. Other factors include certain infections, exposure to ionizing radiation, and environmental pollutants. In the developing world nearly 20% of cancers are due to infections such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and human papillomavirus (HPV). These factors act, at least partly, by changing the genes of a cell. Typically many such genetic changes are required before cancer develops. Approximately 5–10% of cancers are due to genetic defects inherited from a person's parents. Cancer can be detected by certain signs and symptoms or screening tests. It is then typically further investigated by medical imaging and confirmed by biopsy.
Dyspnea, dyspnoea, shortness of breath, or breathlessness is the feeling or feelings associated with impaired breathing. The American Thoracic Society defines it as "a subjective experience of breathing discomfort that consists of qualitatively distinct sensations that vary in intensity," and recommends evaluating dyspnea by assessing the intensity of the distinct sensations, the degree of distress involved, and its burden or impact on activities of daily living. Distinct sensations include effort/work, chest tightness, and air hunger (the feeling of not enough oxygen).
Dyspnea is a normal symptom of heavy exertion but becomes pathological if it occurs in unexpected situations. In 85% of cases it is due to asthma, pneumonia, cardiac ischemia, interstitial lung disease, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or psychogenic causes, such as panic disorder and anxiety. Treatment typically depends on the underlying cause.
The American Thoracic Society defines dyspnea as: "A subjective experience of breathing discomfort that consists of qualitatively distinct sensations that vary in intensity." Other definitions describe it as "difficulty in breathing", "disordered or inadequate breathing", "uncomfortable awareness of breathing", and as the experience of "breathlessness" (which may be either acute or chronic).
According to a research, almost 40% of patients suffering from cancer were diagnosed when the cancer has evolved in the late 3rd stage, meaning it has already made big progress. This is as it is because lung cancer shows no symptoms and it is hard to notice it in its early stages. Fortunately, there are 7 signs that indicate lung cancer and can help you in diagnosing it before it is too late. 1. Persistent Cough Pay attention to the way you cough. If the cough is gone after one or two weeks, it means you have caught a regular cough due to a respiratory infection or a cold. However, if you suffer from the same cough even after two weeks it might indicate to lung cancer. If you cough out mucus it is mandatory to visit your doctor and make the relevant tests on your lungs and chest, for exa...
Lung cancer is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the lungs, producing a growth called a tumour. Cancerous tumours, called malignant tumours, can spread to invade and damage nearby tissues and organs. Eventually, it may spread through the lymph channels or bloodstream to form new tumors in other parts of the body. Presently, lung cancer is the second cause of cancer deaths in Malaysia. In fact, 95% of lung cancer patients die within 5 years of diagnosis. 90% of lung cancer is a result of cigarette smoking. The occurrence of lung cancer is also high among non-smokers who are exposed to second-hand smoke. Tobacco smoke contains some 4,000 different chemicals, of which many are extremely damaging to cells. Over time, these cells can turn cancerous. The more a person smokes, the hig...

Be careful: The First Signs And Symptoms Of Lung Cancer That You Should Not Ignore First. Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in men and women, and the leading cause of cancer death according to the American Cancer Society. While you may think that smokers are the only segment of the population at risk for lung cancer, you may be surprised to know that twenty percent of lung cancer deaths are people who do not smoke. The American Cancer Society explains that air pollution, secondhand smoke, gas, and cancer-causing agents, such as asbestos and gas oil, are the main risk factors for lung cancer. The best defense against lung cancer is to know the first signs and symptoms. The sooner you visit your doctor and the sooner the cancer is diagnosed, the better chance of recovery. Contin...

Lung Cancer at the Advent of Targeted Therapy
She went down to the corner store
And bought a pack of filter kings
Don't you know tomorrow she'll be back for more
Cause she really loves to smoke those things
And every time that she inhales
A cloud of that cigarette smoke
She's just one step closer to the man in black
And sixty cents closer to broke
And she's working on
Lung cancer, emphysema, a cardiac arrest
And she'll probably have a stroke when she sees
The X-rays of her chest
When she had her first cigarette
A puff or two was all she could take
Now if she doesn't have on in her hand all the time
You'll notice it begins to shake
And even though she's nonchalant
And acts as if her habit's a joke
She won't do too much laughing
When her life goes up in smoke
She been smoking that C-I-G-A-R-E-T-T-E
That cigarette's got her on her knees
C-I-G-A-R-E-T-T-E
That darn tobacco won't set her free
Suck baby suck
Suck on that cigarette
Go on and light up that fag and take a drag
It's bound to snuff you yet
She went down to the corner store
And bought a pack of filter kings
Don't you know tomorrow she'll be back for more
Cause she really loves to smoke those things
And every time that she inhales
A cloud of that cigarette smoke
She's just one step closer to the man in black
