Vocational education is education within vocational schools that prepares people for a specific trade. It directly develops expertise in techniques related to technology, skill and scientific technique to span all aspects of the trade. Vocational education is classified as using procedural knowledge.
Generally known as career and technical education (CTE) or technical and vocational education and training (TVET), it prepares people for specific trades, crafts and careers at various levels in a trade, in a craft, as a technician, or in a high professional practitioner position in careers such as engineering, accountancy, nursing, medicine, architecture, law etc. Craft vocations are usually based on manual or practical activities and are traditionally non-academic but related to a specific trade or occupation. Vocational education is sometimes referred to as technical education as the trainee directly develops expertise in a particular group of techniques.
Vocational education can take place at the secondary, post-secondary, further education, and higher education level; and can interact with the apprenticeship system. Increasingly, vocational education can be recognized in terms of recognition of prior learning and partial academic credit towards tertiary education (e.g., at a university) as credit.

More than RM632 million has been allocated to the Skills Development Fund for private accredited centres to spur quality training. Government-private sector collaboration is crucial in ensuring the success of TVET programmes. To encourage involvement of corporate players, the National Dual Training Sy...

Matriculants whose results come out in January, are reminded that university is not for everyone. The report says misconceptions about this sector continue to hamper what could otherwise be positive growth and employment in the countries under review. The Swiss VET sector provides young people with the knowledge and skills needed to enter the labour market. At the same time, it generates a pool of skilled workers for potential employers. Learners enrolled in two-year, three-year or four-year VET programmes spend part of their time attending classes at a vocational school and the remainder of their time doing an apprenticeship at a host company. This combination of classroom instruction and work-based training is referred to as dual-track VET and is the most common form of VET in Switzerland. Learners have over 230 occupations to choose from. Training content is geared to the needs of the labour market. This close correlation with actual working conditions is one of the main reasons why Switzerland has one of the world‘s lowest youth une...

Professor Ewart Keep of the University of Oxford seeks to step back from the ‘surface babble of policy’ and to explore some of the fundamental issues and trends that will underlie post-19 vocational education and training (VET) policy over the next few years. It takes as its starting point the BIS Consultation paper on a Dual Mandate for FE, which appears to encapsulate the Department’s ‘wish list’ for policy development. The talk will explore some of the tensions and contradictions that lie at the heart of policy development in this field, and suggest how these might play out in what seems likely to be an ongoing ‘era of austerity’. The talk will also pose some challenges for policy makers, practitioners, stakeholder groups (especially employers), and for the research community. Learn mo...
