Simon McQuillan, 37, and Alene Khatcherian, 31, were one of just two couples to stay together upon conclusion of the show and early signs indicated that the relationship was only growing stronger.

Khatcherian, a nurse from western Sydney, had hoped to move to Ipswich to live with her 'husband' and had even hoped for children with the truck parts manufacturer.

The pair were a bright spot for a series littered with controversies, highlighted by the breakup of Anthony and Nadia. However, it appears the demands of a long distance relationship proved too much for the duo.

The couple released a statement on Wednesday confirming the news.

"It was a difficult decision but we have decided to part ways. We remain the greatest of friends and we will continue to be part of each others' lives. We thank you for your privacy at this time," the couple said.

Reports indicate that it was McQuillan who ended the relationship, with Khatcherian shocked and saddened by the decision.

Upon hearing the news, fans were quick to express their shock on Twitter, with many revealing their disappointment for the couple.

Simon has reportedly jumped straight back into the dating pool, with reports suggesting he has been spotted on the dating app Tinder.

The breakup furthers calls into question the validity of the show, with just one couple remaining from the most recent season. That couple, Sharon and Nick, appear to be travelling smoothly, with the pair currently living together in Melbourne.

The overall strike rate of the show remains abysmal, with just one couple from the show's first three seasons currently still together, Zoe and Alex from season one. The pair are planning to get married for 'real' after they welcomed a child to the world last November.
